I haven't read the Twilight books, admittedly. My library doesn't have them, and I am not spending money on a book I might hate and chuck across the room in a fit of annoyed rage. And according to my friends who have read the books, I might end up doing that. So until I can borrow them or my library stocks them, I will be in the dark on Stephanie Myers books.

I can make some great recommendations though, as urban fantasy books are my favorite genre.

The Night-Huntress novels, Half-Way to the Grave and One Foot in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost are excellent. Entertaining, with a good plot and an excellent main character. Bones the vampire is a little like Spike, but with his own unique history that sets him apart. And the books are just HOT.

The Dark-Hunters series by Sherrilyn Kenyon is entertaining. Not earth-shatteringly original, but it has its own interesting mythos that ties in nicely with the Greek Gods, and Atlantis. The plots of the books are all similiar, but they're fast-paced and the porn is lovely. (cuz we all know we flip through the books to get to the that). I'm not a fan of Kenyon's female characters (with the exception of Simi and Tabitha), but the men are always fascinating.

The Mercy Thompson novels by Patricia Briggs are also really, really good. The writing is fantastic, the setting and characters are really unique. The main character Mercy is a skinwalker--a girl who can turn into a coyote. She's a mechanic, and her boss is a fey, her friend a vampire, her ex a werewolf, and her neighbor (and major love interest) the Alpha male for the whole city. They're just amazing books.

Another series I'm enjoying is Stray and Rogue by Rachel Vincent. It's not a vampire novel, but the characters are well-drawn and very human for all that they're actually were-cats. The main character is highly fallible, which you don't see much. Usually the girls of these books can do no wrong. Not Faith. When she messes up, she messes up big time.

Another series that I can never recommend enough is the Zodiac Series by Vicki Petersson. It's not vampires, but the mythology in the series, along with the characters, the setting (Las Vegas), the action...pretty much everything about the series makes it truly amazing. Joanna Archer might be my favorite superhero ever....mostly because she makes mistakes, she does the wrong thing, and she owns up to it. Seriously, just give the books a looky-loo. You won't be disappointed.

There are a couple of series I'll recommend you skip too. The Blood Ties series by Jennifer Armintrout is at the top of that list. I hated the main character, and all of the supporting characters. It's just a sucky series of books. The Sisters of the Moon series by Yasmine Galenorn is also truly awful. Skip them and save yourself the trouble of vomiting on the books.
