Title: Advanced Technology
Author: Ophelia
Notes: This little idea came to me while putting my niece to bed tonight. It's pointless, really, but oh well.

“Angel, you tell me stuff, right?

“Stuff?”

“Yeah. Like, if there was something important going on, you would talk to me about it, wouldn’t you?”

“Well, yeah, I guess. But you know I’m not much of a talker Cordy.”

‘So you’re saying you don’t talk to anyone.”

“Well, no, not really.”

“But if you did, you’d tell me what was going on, right?”

“Cordelia, nothing is going on. What is this about?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“Yep, nothing.”

“OK”

“So, Angel?”

“Yes?”

“So let’s just say something was hypothetically going on with you…you’ve learned your lesson after your whole beige period, right?”

“My lesson?”

“Angel, this would really work better if you gave me more than two word answers. After all, I know you are capable of more

“Cordelia, why are you muttering?”

“Hmmm?”

“Vampire hearing, Cordy. Muttering doesn’t really matter.”

‘Oh, yeah. Damn superpowers.”

“You didn’t seem to mind them last night.”

“Yeah, well stamina is a lot more useful in that situation than advanced hearing.”

‘Cordy….”

“Ok, ok! I already said thank you! Yes, you once again saved the damsel in distress. Hurray for you. But speaking of last night, you sure you didn’t, oh I don’t know….feel the need to talk to someone after all that battle trauma? After the whole me nearly dying thing?”

“No, Cordelia, I didn’t.”

‘Huh, well, what if you did?”

“But I didn’t”

“But if you did, I’m just saying, would you talk to me? You shouldn’t let things fester.”

“I guess”

“And what if you couldn’t talk to me? Who would you talk to?”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s simple enough, Angel. If you couldn’t talk to me about what you are feeling, I would just want to know you were talking to someone who could help you, someone who can, you know, talk back.”

“Huh? And why wouldn’t I be able to talk to you?”

“ No reason, really”

“Cordelia, what aren’t you telling me?”

“So, Angel, you feel like you are getting caught up on this whole baby technology thing?”

“Cordelia, don’t try to change the subject.”

“I’m not!”

“Could have fooled me.”

“You know what? Never mind. This conversation is exhausting me.”

“Hmmm, I know the feeling.”

“Ha, ha. I’m going to go check on Connor.”

“Cordelia, we aren’t done with this.”

“Angel, you don’t even know the half of it.”

“Good morning Angel”

“Morning Wes. You find that book you were looking for?”

‘Yes, yes. Fred and I found it in a shop on….”

Ooooh, come here you big boy! Look at you smiling at me….did you have a good nap?? Ooh yeah, come here.

“Wes, did you hear that?”

“Hear what?”

‘Cordelia’s voice. It sounds like its coming from a radio. Have Wolfram and Hart been back? I don’t see how they could have possibly…”

“Calm down, Angel, there aren’t any new bugs.”

“But then what was….”

“Angel, we prepped you on this. Now what is this again?’

“That’s the baby monitor, it lets us hear Connor when he wakes up”

‘Riiiight. But the funny thing about monitors, Angel. They don’t just pick up infant voices. Oh for heaven’s sake it isn’t that difficult! You are hearing Cordelia over the monitor, Angel! It picks up all of us when we are in there.”

“Angel? You still with us?”

“Uhm, yeah…..”

“So, as I was saying, Fred and I found the book…”

“So that thing would pick up any talking that happened near Connor’s crib?”

‘Well, I would think that would be….”

Oh sweetie, you are sopping wet! Didn’t Daddy change you before putting you down? Figures….if Daddy can’t even figure out that your monitor even picks up those super stealthy vamp voices….

“Ahem….as I was saying, rather obvious. Angel, are you sure you are quite alright?”

“Yeah, uhm, yes. I’m fine. Just….just thinking about something.”

‘Alright, well, I think that…oh damn! I’ve left my second sack in the backseat. I’d better go get that.”

“she didn’t hear me, she didn’t hear me, she didn’t hear me”

“Angel, what was that? Were you saying something?”

“NO! No…go on. I’ll just stay here and……stay here.”

Connor….your Daddy claims to be not so much a talker, but he sure does talk a whole lot to you, now doesn’t he? And what I can’t quite figure out is whether or not he meant to get heard. I mean, who secretly confides in their 2 month old that they are in love when the girl in question is right downstairs? Especially when she is on the other side of the most obvious bugging system known to man….one your Daddy had explained to him a million times. Hmmm, so next time you and your Daddy have one of your talks? Maybe you could tell him he should really talk to someone who can talk back about these things. Better, yet, someone who could kiss back….You think you can pass that message along?
