Notes: I decided to get off my lurking butt and post my very first story. Oh in case you're wondering Anya is off being a vengence demon somewhere and Dawn is visiting her Dad. I can only handle so many characters at once. Be forewarned, I have taken minor liberties with the past.
Feedback: I'd love some but please be gentle. This is my very first try.
Part 5
Cordelia and Giles were walking in the park. She linked her arm with his and tilted her face to the sky. She could feel the warmth of the sun on her face. *Since when does the sun make me feel lonely?*
"Penny for them."
"Just a penny. This girl has expenses."
"Alright. How about a shiny nickel."
"Now that's more like it." She laughed. "When did life become so complicated?"
"For me it was when my father told me about my destiny."
"I used to blame Buffy for my problems. I actually found the thought comforting."
"And now?"
"I am responsible for my own fate. I am nobody's victim. I've had my chances to walk away from this life. To be normal. The truth is I like myself a lot more now then I did before I knew what went bump in the night. You remember what a superficial bitch I was."
"Ah! How could I forget."
"Hey, where did my tact guy go?"
"He became enchanted by a beautiful tactless young woman and was never the same."
"I've missed you."
"Why haven't you called? It would have been nice to hear that sooner."
"The phones work both ways. You could have called me."
"I know. I'm sorry."
She gave him a small smile. "I thought about calling you, a lot. I came close so many times."
"Why didn't you?"
"Please don't take this the wrong way, but calling you felt like quitting."
Giles pulled away. "How could I possibly take that the wrong way."
"Don't. Let me explain." She pulled him down to sit on a nearby bench. "Calling you would have lead to seeing you again."
"And that would be bad how?"
"My life, our..my mission is in LA. I needed to be strong."
"And I made you feel weak?"
"No. You let me be weak."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Rupert. God, so many things went wrong since I last saw you. Telling myself I was fine..telling Angel and Wesley I was fine kept me going. The truth was I was in so much pain and I was scared. I knew I could keep up my facade with them. They wanted to believe me and I thought if I could convince them then maybe I could convince myself. I knew I wouldn't be able to lie to you. I would break down and tell you everything. I knew I would fall into your arms and ask you to be strong for me."
"It's OK to ask for help. I would have been there for you."
"I know, but Angel and Wesley needed me and the truth is I needed them too. I just couldn't let them see my pain."
"How about now?"
"None of us are the same. I'm a lot stronger now."
"That doesn't really answer my question."
"It's complicated."
He shook his heads. "Don't give me that. You're talking to the master remember. You are strong for all of them, especially Angel but you refuse to let them return the favor. Thrust me I know all about it. I have been doing the exact same thing for a lot longer than you." He quietly added. "I let you really see me."
She smiled to herself. "I wouldn't let you hide from me."
"I needed that."
She clasped his hand. "I know. You've always stood there and took whatever abuse Buffy dished out."
"She has a lot of pressure on her. Her destiny is an enormous responsibility."
"It is but you still have to take care of yourself too."
"But that's my point. We, both of us, take care of those we love and we take care of ourselves. We won't let them take care of us."
"That's not true. Angel has saved my life more times than I can count. He protects me. He'd do just about anything to protect me."
"As has Buffy for me. That isn't what I am talking about and you know it. I have tried to ease her burden over the years. After and during every trauma, I listened and consoled her. To this day we have never discussed what I went through after I was...interrogated by Angelus. We've never discussed how I felt when she ran away. I don't really blame her. She had her own pain to deal with and it's not like I ever tried telling her. I couldn't bear the thought of adding to the pain she already carried."
"I didn't understand that before but I do now. I used to think Buffy was being selfish. That she should have forced you to talk about it, like I did. Now. I know why you won't let her in. It seems instinctual to keep it to yourself. God Rupert! I'm a demon by choice. I joke about it but there have been times when it scared me."
"How did it happen?"
"I was dying. I found a way around it."
"What?!"
"The visions were slowly killing me."
"When did you find out and why the hell didn't you call me?"
"I found out a week before Angel fired us. I wanted to call you then but no quitting for this reformed bitch. I felt the pain of the world and I couldn't walk away from that."
"Last time I checked we were doing some saving ourselves in Sunnydale."
"Yeah but that wasn't where Angel's mission was."
"What about that. He fired you?"
"Yeah. The road to redemption was getting to him. The evil lawyers brought Darla back to drive him insane or evil. They almost succeeded too. He tried to give up, hence Connor."
"Why didn't you tell him?"
"He was too busy being obsessed with Darla. At the time, I wasn't sure if he'd care. It was a difficult time for all of us."
"I wish you would have called me."
"I almost did, but I wasn't alone. A part of me was still hoping Angel would come to his senses. I wasn't the same after my neverending vision ordeal. I had experienced the fear and pain of the hopeless. I needed to help. Sunnydale had all the help it needed. LA was without a champion."
"I can understand that. Why didn't you tell him when he came back?"
"I wasn't ready to let him back in at first. He hurt me more than anyone ever had. I was willing to work with him for the sake of the mission, but my friendship wasn't a part of the deal anymore."
"What happened?"
He watched as a smile bloomed on her face. He felt like he was watching the sunrise. "He bought me a new wardrobe. I know it sounds superficial, but it wasn't about the clothes. Well it wasn't just about the clothes. My brooding vampire, king of the monotone wardrobe, went shopping for me. The clothes were beautiful, a rainbow of color. He already had vision girl back. He didn't need to do it. He wanted his friend back and that made all the difference."
"Why didn't you tell him then?"
"I wanted to be happy for a little while. Then Pylea happened. That changed my outlook on my visions. It stopped being something I didn't ask for. It became my purpose."
"In what way?"
"I had my first chance to get rid of the visions."
"How?"
"Prophesy. What else."
"Why didn't you?"
"The visions are mine. I use them to help people. I need them and so does Angel. I made my decision and I don't regret it. I planned to tell everyone after we returned. I needed to wait until we left Pylea, I didn't want them to try to force me to get rid of them."
"But Willow was waiting for you upon your return."
"Yes. He had lost Buffy. I couldn't tell him he was about to lose me too. He needed to deal with his loss and he needed to know I would be there when he returned."
"And when he returned?"
"I had accepted my fate. Slayers aren't the only ones who die young. I didn't want the rest of my time to be sad. I wanted to go out helping people."
"Slayers fight for their lives."
"That's not fair!"
"No letting yourself die and not telling anyone isn't fair. Why didn't you tell anyone else?"
"They would have told Angel."
"So you decided to deal with it alone."
"It's my life."
"And to hell with those who love you. You should have told me."
"What would you have done?"
"Helped. I could have found a way to save you."
"I saved myself."
"Part demon?"
"Part demon. The Powers gave me my second out and I turned it down. This is my purpose. I don't regret accepting that. Being part demon isn't what frightens me, exactly. Doyle was. It was the not knowing what to expect, what it meant that scared me. I've had time to deal with it. I'm proud of who I've become."
"You should be. I know I am."
"Thanks. Please don't be mad at me. I did what I felt I had to."
"Since you didn't die, you are forgiven. Had you died, I would have been very angry with you."
She laughed. "That seems fair."
"So how are you now?"
"Vision pain is a thing of the past."
"Again, not a an answer."
"I'm trying to put my family back together again."
"Gunn told me about Wesley and Holtz. He also mentionned what happened with Connor."
"I'm glad. I don't think I could rehash all that."
"Have you seen Wesley?"
"No. I want to but it would hurt Angel too much. He has been through so much pain. He would see it as a betrayal and he's had enough of that lately."
"I know you're trying to take care of your family but I'd like to remind you of your advice. You need to take care of yourself too."
"Rupert, I was taking care of myself when I went on vacation with Groo. Connor was taken to a hell dimension by a nutball, Wesley ended up in the hospital with a slit throat, and Angel had to mourn the loss of the only child he'll ever have. I was taking care of myself when I agreed to follow my new destiny to the higher realms. Angel ended up in a metal box at the bottom of the ocean by Connor who was confused and hurting, Wesley continued his downward spiral, and Gunn and Fred were running around trying to figure out where everyone went. I don't think my family could survive any more 'me' time."
"Cordelia, you cannot possibly blame yourself for all that!"
"Can't I?" When he looked like he was going to argue, she continued. "I need to get back. I left Angel, Connor and Spike alone with weapons." She managed a small smile. "Could you do something for me?"
"Anything"
"Visit Wesley. I can't. Not yet anyway. He's all alone."
"Of course. I had planned on it actually."
"Please don't mention it to anyone. He probably won't be happy to see you but don't let him chase you away. Make him talk to you."
"I will." Cordelia gave him a quick hug before hurrying back to the hotel.
***
She had barely walked thru the door before Angel advanced on her.
"Where have you been?"
She ignored his gruff tone. "Rupert and I went for a walk in the park."
He stepped back. He was surprised she told him the truth without any cajoling. "Why didn't you tell me before you left?"
"I wasn't aware I needed your permission. I am planning on going to the bathroom now if that's OK with you." She brushed him aside and went into the downstairs bathroom.
He sat down on her desk and waited for her to come out. He started talking as soon as the door opened. "Why did you tell Connor not to tell me?"
"Because I knew you would get all growly and I didn't want you to scare him."
He was trying to regroup. She was making sense and he wanted to be angry with her. "Well you didn't explain avoidance to him very well."
"Huh?"
"When I asked him where you were, he calmly told me he was to avoid that question."
She turned to look at him. She suddenly doubled over in laughter. When she straightened up, she was clutching her sides. As soon as she looked at him she started laughing again.
He was waiting for her to say something in her defense but she showed no signs of stopping. "What is so funny?"
She tried to take a few calming breaths. "Sorry. I was just imagining the expression on your face when he said that. Too funny!" She noticed he didn't share her humor. "Angel, Rupert and I were catching up. It's been a while since we've seen each other. You're getting upset over nothing."
"Who's upset? My best friend asked my son to keep secrets from me which he was only too happy to do. After all, he likes you a lot more than he likes me. Why should I be upset?"
"Hey" She stepped closer to him and placed a hand on his cheek. "I'm sorry. It wasn't some conspiracy against you. It's just that you've been getting so growly when I'm alone with someone and I didn't want you to do it in front of Connor. I know things are tense and you're afraid to get your hopes up."
"He tricked me before. I don't think I could take that hurt again."
"I know but he isn't pretending. He's taking things slow this time. We are going to get through this. Connor will accept you. It's just gonna take time."
"I have plenty of that."
"See. Nothing to worry about."
"Thank you. What would I do without you?"
"I shudder to think. It's a good thing I'm not going anywhere."
"Promise?"
She looked directly into eyes. "I promise." He pulled her into his arms and held her as if she was his lifeline. "OK. I'd like to keep my ribs intact."
He released her. "Sorry. So what did you and Giles talk about?"
"This and that. Has Connor had lunch?"
"Yes. I made him a sandwich. Do you want anything?"
"No thanks."
"So did my name come up?"
"What?"
"With Giles. Am I this or that?"
"A little bit of both. So where is Connor now?"
"He and Spike went back downstairs. They were gonna train some more. I came back up here. Flashbacks."
"He isn't up to anything. He promised me not to hurt Spike."
"I'm happy for Spike."
"He's not gonna hurt you either. C'mon. I could use a workout."
As she dragged him down the stairs, it occured to him. She'd managed to avoid telling him about her conversation with 'Rupert'. *Where is he anyway?* "Cordy.." He stopped when he smelled blood. He was about to react but she was already holding Spike's bleeding face.
"What happened?" She looked over at Connor who seemed to be fascinated by the floor. She looked back at Spike. "What happened? I told you I didn't want to see any blood when I came back."
"Cordelia, I.."
Spike interrupted Connor's confession. "It was my fault, Luv." He glanced at Connor before he continued. "The kid is really good. He had me working so hard I didn't realize I slipped into my gameface. It startled him and I ended up with a mouthful of the sword handle."
"I see." She released Spike's face and turned to Connor. He was still staring at the floor, his sword twisting in his hand. She lifted his chin. "I'm proud of you." She ignored Spike's cry of outrage.
"You are? Why?"
"Look at your hand." He looked down at his sword.
"My sword?"
"Yes. You could have taken off his head. Instead you hit him with the handle. I say that's progress. It takes a strong will to change your nature. You were raised to kill any and all demons. It isn't easy to ignore your instincts. That is why I'm proud of you." She gave him a smile which he returned wholeheartedly after a moments hesitation. She turned back to Spike. "Tell Connor you forgive him."
"Isn't he supposed to apologize first?" She arched her brow at him. "Fine. Connor, it's OK. I'm fine."
"Baby, why don't you take a break. I'd like the chance to see what your Uncle Spike's got." She grabbed Connor's sword.
"Hey! I'm the injured party here. How come he's the one who gets comforted?"
"Pfft. House of Aurelius, house of whiners is more like it. Suck it up and take it like a man."
"Hey" His outrage was shared by his grandsire.
"Oh please! You two are the biggest babies. C'mon." She shared a smile with Connor who was enjoying her taunts. She squared off against Spike.
"I don't want to hurt you, Pet."
"Patronizing much. Let's see what ya got, Fangboy."
Spike kept his attacks slow and held back on his strength. She had him disarmed and on his back with her sword at his throat in minutes.
"Oh come on Spike! If you don't at least try I'll give you a lot more than a bloody lip."
He glanced over at Angel and received a nod from him. He was defending the honor of their order. He dusted himself off and began an earnest attack. The swords were moving so fast they were almost a blur.
Angel and Connor were watching from the safety of the stairs. Connor was in complete awe. She was good.
Angel was in shock. They hadn't trained together since her return from the higher realms. She was amazing. *How the hell did she get this good and why didn't I know?*
The clash of metal on metal could be heard throughout the hotel. It had taken a lot longer but the outcome was the same. Spike found himself disarmed on the floor with her sword at his throat. "Bloody hell Cheerleader. When did you become Xena?"
She started laughing and gave him a wink. "Thanks for the warm up. If you want my secrets, you're going to have to beat me first." She tossed Spike's fallen sword to Angel. "It's been a while since we had a go. You up for it old man?"
He stood there looking like a fish. "Cor, where did..how did..um.who.."
"You're not scared of the challenge, are you? Your ego not up for it? What happened to 'I'm a vampire, you can't hurt me'? I could send Connor and Spike upstairs if that would make you more comfortable."
His questions seemed irrelevant when he heard his son laughing at him. She needed to be taken down a peg and he was just the manpire to do it.
She could see the wheels turning. She almost felt bad for mocking him in front of his son and grandchilde. Almost. She had been secretly waiting for the chance to show him what she had learned in the higher realms. This was gonna be fun.
He immediately went on the offensive. He figured he could overpower her quickly and then they could talk. He was surprised when she had no trouble evading his attacks, although she wasn't launching any counterattacks. He decided to change his tactics. He tried to sweep her legs. Big mistake. She hadn't used her legs until he did. He soon found his sweep evaded and was on the receiving end of a powerful kick to the side of his knee. He grunted in pain but managed to stay on his feet.
After her kick to his knee, she began her attacks. She was getting tired. They seemed to be evenly matched despite their differing styles. It was time to play dirty. When he came in to try another sweep, she twisted her body to afford him a rather generous view down her shirt. She used his momentary distraction to strike his hands with the flat of her sword. She was rewarded with the sound of metal hitting the floor. With a few swings of her sword, she had him pinned against the wall. "Wow, this seems familiar." When he gulped but remained quiet, she added. "You know what I want to hear."
He tried to glare but it was difficult. She forced him up on his toes to avoid her blade. He took an unnecessary breath. "Fine. Go team!"
"That's a good boy." She stepped back. "Well this was fun but I need to run home. I have to pack a few things if I'm gonna stay at the hotel. I have no idea what to wear tonight. It's been too long since I went dancing." She handed Angel her sword and turned to leave.
He knew he should stop her. He had a million unanswered questions but he couldn't seem to find his voice. The three men watched her bound up the steps.
"Peaches, your chit just handed you your ass!"
"Shut up Spike and watch your language."
"I can't believe we just got our as..butts kicked by a twentysomething year old ex-cheerleader."
Angel was about to respond when his son started laughing. He'd never heard him laugh like that. He looked like a normal teenager. *Wait a minute, he looks like Cordelia did. What is it with people I love laughing at me!*
When Connor finally came up for air, he looked at Angel then Spike and then the door Cordelia had walked thru. "I cannot wait to tell Gunn about this!"
Angel and Spike gave each other a panicked look. There was no way they were going to live this down. Xander and Gunn would see to that.
Connor started laughing again at their forlorn expressions. He couldn't wait until dinner tonight.
Part 6
Angel was pacing in his bedroom. He had been pacing in the lobby but he got tired of the questioning glances. Everyone had returned to the hotel as planned except Cordy. She had been gone for nearly two hours. He came close to questioning Giles about his walk with her but he stopped himself. It would be better to talk to Cordy. Their training session had shown him that they really needed to talk. It was more than just jealousy now. He wanted to know what had happened in the higher realms. They'd never talked about it. He was just grateful to get her back. He didn't question it. *How long does it take to pack a bag?* He couldn't take it anymore. He needed more room to pace so he headed back to the lobby.
Fred saw Angel coming and told him before he could ask. "She's not back yet."
He didn't even pretend that she had assumed incorrectly. "Maybe we should call her."
"Call who?" Everyone turned at the sound of Cordelia's voice. "Sorry I took so long. I got into a fight with Dennis."
Angel felt relieved. She was home and she brought a rather large overnight bad. He smiled. *She must be planning to stay for a while* "What did you fight about this time?"
"He was mad 'cause I didn't call him last night. I promised not to stay out all night anymore without calling him and letting him know. I swear he's worse than you. He's so immature. I'm trying to pack and he kept throwing things at me." She turned to glare at Fred and Gunn who were laughing.
"What's so funny? Some pillock was throwing shit at the cheerleader. Who's Dennis and where is he? Shouldn't we be chasing him down and beating him bloody? Peaches?"
"I hate to agree with Deadboy Jr but if this guy is getting violent?"
The Sunnydale group couldn't understand why the others seemed amused by their concern.
"Thanks for your concern everyone but Dennis is my roommate.."
"Peaches lets you live with a guy?"
"Hey! Angel doesn't LET me live with anyone. I decide where I live and with whom."
Gile adjusted his glasses. "We're only worried about your well being, Cordelia." He cleared his throat. "You didn't mention you were seeing anyone."
Angel was getting annoyed. Giles sounded jealous. *Who the hell does he think he is?*
"Rupert, I know you're concerned but it's not necessary. Look guys. You can't kick Dennis' ass because he doesn't have one. He's my ghost and he isn't violent. I promised I would call and I forgot. He was mad so he helped me pack by throwing my clothes at me."
"Good lord Cordelia. You can't be serious."
"What? It didn't hurt. They were just clothes."
"Cordelia, ghosts can be erratic and often times violent. It should be exercised immediately."
"Nobody messes with my ghost unless they want to see me seriously pissed off. Dennis is my friend!"
"What is it with Sunnydale women and dead people? What's wrong with guys with a pulse? Can I get a little support Giles."
"In case you forgot, Xander. I gave you a chance and you cheated on me."
Xander shifted in his seat. "I see your point...but what about Giles. He never did anything wrong and he's available."
Cordelia gave Giles a knowing smile which Angel noticed. He decided to put a stop that. "There's nothing wrong with liking dead people." At their strange looks, he continued. "Dennis is a friendly ghost and he would never hurt her. It was his mother's ghost that tried to kill her."
Cordelia started laughing. "Poor Doyle. He felt so bad for finding me a haunted apartment, when really it was all your fault."
"My fault? I wanted you to give the place up. You were the one who decided to fight for it."
"It's rent controlled. Besides you were the one who couldn't get me out of his place fast enough."
"You got peanut butter in the bed AND you cut up my kitchen floor."
"True but does that really matter in the end. The whole place got blown up anyway so no harm."
"Don't joke about that night. I almost lost you."
"But you didn't." She gave him a smile and suddenly remembered they weren't alone. "We kinda got off topic there. Just be assured, I am in no danger from my ghost." She looked at her watch. "Let's go to dinner. We don't want to miss our reservation."
The Sunnydale gang sat in stunned silence. Each of them trying to absorb the new information. When they looked up, they saw that they were alone and hurried to their van. Spike started the engine just as Angel drove off.
***
They were shown to their table almost immediately upon arrival. Rescueing a restaurant owner had its perks. Everyone seemed hesitant to choose a seat. Finally Giles chose to sit at one of the ends. Willow and Buffy sat at his sides. Xander chose the seat next to Willow. He was surprised when Cordelia sat next to him. Angel was about to sit next to her but Spike beat him to the chair. He was tempted to rip his grandchilde out of the seat but he didn't want to embarass Cordy at yet another restaurant. He sat on the end opposite Giles. Connor hesitated before taking the seat next to his father. He wanted to make Cordy happy. When Fred sat next to Connor, Gunn realized he had no choice but to sit between Fred and the B-word.
Connor was studying his menu but the words didn't make sense. "Cordelia, I do not understand this book. What should I ask for?"
"Oh sweetie. I'll let Aunt Fred help you. She's the expert when it comes to Mexican food." She shared a smile with Fred before the texan started teaching him Mexican Food 101.
Everyone began munching on tortilla chips once their orders were taken. Cordelia reached into her bag and pulled out a wine bottle.
"Ooh wine!" Xander offered her his glass.
"Sorry Xander this isn't for you."
"I can handle my liquor. It's Buffy you have to watch."
"Hey!"
"Sorry Buff but you know I speak the truth."
"You're the one who served me that beer."
"Well I didn't know it was cursed."
"Yes but you knew she was underage."
"Giles, I already apologized for that. I have no desire to deal with CaveBuffy again."
"That was a fluke. I was fine when Spike and I..nevermind. I'll have some wine Cordy."
Cordelia shook off her confusion. "If you guys want some wine, feel free to order some but you won't like this kind." She lowered her voice. "It's one part red wine and two parts pigs blood."
"Eww"
"Definitely not for me!"
She opened the bottle and handed it to Spike. Giles began cleaning his glasses. "Where on earth did you purchase that?"
"I didn't buy it. I made it. Well I bought a bottle of regular wine. It has a screw top. It's not exactly the good stuff but easier than dealing with a cork." She glanced around at their stupified looks. "What?"
"That settles it Peaches. After dinner, you and me are throwing down 'cause I'm keepin' her." He downed his glass. He didn't notice Buffy's eyes flash.
Cordelia shot a look at Angel. "Well I have come a long way since I first put cinnamin in your blood. At least someone appreciates my efforts."
Angel looked at the bottle. He still wasn't sure he wanted to drink in front of Connor.
"Maybe Angel doesn't want to gross anyone out. Spike doesn't really mind being a pig."
"Buffy didn't anyone ever teach you it was bad manners to try to make someone feel bad about being who they are. Angel and Spike are a part of my family and they deserve to enjoy their meal just as much as any of you." She watched with a smile as Connor poured his father a glass.
"Cordelia is right." At Angel's questioning look, he shrugged. "You made me dinner."
Angel fought back the urge to cry with joy at his son's acceptance. He picked up his glass and took a sip. "It's not bad, Cor. You know I appreciate your creativeness. I was just mad when you put tobassco sauce in it and didn't warn me." The resulting laughter seemed to ease the tension. "And Spike." He slapped his grandchilde's back. "You might..might be able to take me, but we both know she can wipe the floor with you." He grinned at Spike's pained expression.
He wasn't about to take the Poof's abuse. "At least I didn't lose 'cause I was too busy lookin' down her shirt. Connor tired me out is all." He gave Angel an evil smirk as he let what he said sink in.
Angel became fascinated with his wine glass. He was saved from responding by the arrival of the food. The comment was soon forgotten as everyone began eating. Fred showed Connor the proper way to eat a taco before she devoured hers.
Angel didn't like how Cordelia kept whispering to Xander. Thanks to the busy restaurant even with his vampiric hearing, he couldn't listen to their conversation.
Spike was amused at how angry Angel was getting. He stole a glance at Buffy. She was laughing at something Giles was saying. *She is so beautiful when she laughs* He jumped slightly when Cordelia whispered in his ear.
"She didn't mean what she said earlier."
"What?"
"She was jealous because you said you wanted to keep me."
"You're imagining things. Be careful, pet. The world can barely handle Dru. It doesn't need another crazy seer." He smiled when she giggled in response. He looked up to see an angry slayer staring at them. *Maybe she's not so crazy* This time his thoughts were disturbed by someone stabbing him with a fork. "Oww! Bloody hell Peaches! That's my hand you just stabbed."
An unrepentant Angel leaned in. "Sorry. It was an accident." He noticed Cordelia's unconvinced look. "What? It was."
"Sure it was." She shook her head and turned back to Xander. She missed Angel's scowl.
"Peaches, you really need to stop with the jealous act."
"Shut up Spike."
"She isn't interested in Chubs. She's trying to be friends with her old school mates. Quit tryin' to make her feel bad about it."
Angel really hated it when Spike made sense. He crossed his arms and pouted. "She didn't go to school with you. You tried to kill all of them back then. She's barely paid any attention to me all night and dinner's almost over."
"Might I remind you that you tried to kill all of them too. I was evil. Stop acting like a child. The chit made you blood wine. Most of her time and energy is spent taking care of you, so let her have some fun for once. We'll be gone in a few days and then you can have her all to yourself again."
Angel fidgeted in his seat. He wanted to be able to argue with Spike's logic but he couldn't come up with anything.
Spike watched him struggle. "Look Peaches. It's time you stop being a Poofter and tell the chit how you feel about her."
Angel pointed at Buffy. "Look how much good it's done you. The only reason she talks to you is so you'll help her fight."
He angrily whispered. "Fuck you. I'm not ashamed of being love's bitch. I never was. You know what? You don't deserve her." Spike threw his napkin down. "Excuse me all, but I need a cigarette." He pushed back from the table and walked out.
Everyone watched him leave. Cordelia didn't know what upset him but she was sure it was something Angel said. She looked at Buffy hoping she would go after him. When she didn't, Cordelia stood up.
"I could use some air. I'm just gonna step outside." She shot Angel a parting glare before she left.
***
Spike was sitting on the hood of the plymouth when Cordelia joined him.
"Have a seat, luv."
"Angel is gonna freak when he sees us sitting on his precious car."
"Good. I think the batmobile can withstand our combined weight."
"Was that a crack about my weight. I know I've put on a couple of pounds since graduation but.."
"Don't be ridiculous, pet. There is nothing wrong with your body. You have curves in all the right places. I don't know why chits today want to look like walking sticks. A man doesn't want to feel bones poking him when he's on top of his girl."
"You should write for a fashion magazine. Maybe you could start a new trend."
"You mean I might be good for something."
"Hey. What's this brood session all about? Did Angel say something?"
"Not really. I was givin' him a bit of advice and somethin' he said reminded me how unwanted I am."
"That's not true. You are wanted. You're needed too. Maybe it's time to be honest with them."
"I'm not ready yet. I will. I just need time."
"For what?"
"I don't know. I just know I'm not ready."
"OK. You know you can talk to me, right? I hoped Angel would be supportive.."
"He is. It's not really his fault. I told him somethin' he didn't want to hear."
"Which was?"
"I gave him a reality check, Luv. He never was fond of Spike logic. It's an acquired taste."
"I like it. You should see how he handles Cordy logic. He listens, ignores it and ends up doing something stupid."
"That sounds like Peaches."
They looked up as they heard approaching voices. She glanced around at the smiling faces. "Angel, let me have your keys."
"Why?"
"Because the girls are riding in the plymouth and the guys get the van. We need to discuss our plans for the rest of the evening."
"You can talk when you get back to the hotel. You aren't driving my car."
"I don't plan to."
"Can I drive?" Everyone laughed at Buffy's request. Cordelia used the distraction to snatch his keys.
"Hey! Who's gonna drive?"
"Spike"
"He's not a girl. I can drive the ladies. He can drive the van."
"Thanks for the offer but since he actually has a fun bone in his body he can be our driver." She tossed the keys to Spike. "Think you can handle it, Pet?" She mocked.
He gave her a wink. "Anything for you, Luv."
The women left the grumbling men behind and piled into the car. Cordelia gave Angel a small wave as Spike drove away.
"This sucks!"
Angel nodded at the scowling men. "As much as it pains be to agree with Xander, this definitely sucks."
"I don't know why Barbie has to drag my girl along."
Xander patted his back. "Yeah. She was kickin' and screamin' the whole time. The giggling was just to cover her pain."
"Did we do something to anger Cordelia?"
"No Connor. She isn't angry. Well she's not angry at you anyway. Let's go home." The sullen men climbed into the van and headed back to the hotel.
***
Spike watched Angel, Giles, Gunn, Connor and Xander come thru the Hyperion's doors. Angel wanted to wipe Spike's smirk off his face with his fist.
"Where's Cordy?"
"The girls are upstairs getting ready."
"Did they tell you where they're going?"
"Yeah. Cordy told me all about it, but I've been sworn to secrecy. She doesn't want you showin' up. It seems she hasn't cut loose in a very long time. Said she had a dress she's been wantin' to wear. Told me to wait here. Wanted to get my opinion." He laced his fingers together and put his hands behind his head.
"Do shut up Spike."
"I was only answerin' the Poof's question, Rups."
"Deadboy Jr is always eager to help."
"Don't call him that." They turned as Cordelia came down the stairs. She was wearing a low cut, dark red dress that came to just above the knee and hugged her form in all the right places. "He has a name Xander. I suggest you use it."
"Why? He never uses mine."
She looked at Spike. "He has a point Spike."
"You look absolutely amazing, Luv."
She gave a twirl. "You think?"
He leered at her a moment. "Good enough to eat."
She blushed. "That's sweet."
"Sweet? He's a bloodsucker. That's not sweet!"
She put her hands on her hips. "Are you saying that I don't look good enough to eat?"
Xander coughed. "No. You look very ed.." He stopped when Giles elbowed him.
"You look ravishing, Cordelia." He walked up to her and kissed her cheek.
"Wow a gentleman. I forgot the world still had one." She glared at her vampire. "Well?"
"You..you..look..wow." She smiled at his almost compliment. "Go change!"
Her smile vanished. She ran her hands over her dress. "What's the matter? Do I have something on my dress?"
"No but there isn't enough..material. You can't go out looking like that." Without me he silently added.
"C'mon Peaches. That's the style today. She's gonna turn every head in the place. Ignore him, Pet."
"I usually do." She straightened her neckline. She didn't notice the men straining to watch, except Connor. He was staring at Fred as she seemed to glide down the stairs. He gulped.
"Wow"
Cordelia followed Connor's gaze. "Fred, you look totally hot. I told you that dress would look fabulous on you."
Gunn took in Fred's dress. The blue dress came down to just below her knees. It would have been conservative except for the slit that almost went up to her hip. "You can't wear that!"
"Don't you like it, Charles?"
"Yes. That's my problem. You ain't wearin' it for me. You're goin' out without me!"
"Ignore him Fred. That dress is perfect for you. It shows off your legs."
"Thanks Cordy. You were right. We need a night off from ourselves."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Charles, I want to have some fun, so stop pouting."
"Fine." He stopped himself from stomping his feet.
Angel was staring at Cordy. She seemed so happy. *happy that she's going to a club filled with strange men* His reverie was shattered as he heard a whistle.
"Will, you look sexy as hell. For a second I thought vamp Willow was making another appearance."
"Thanks, Xan." Willow was wearing tight red leather pants and a sparkly black halter top.
"Red, I knew there was a vixen in there somewhere underneath the fuzzy sweaters. Give us a twirl."
The red head blushed. "Do you think I look okay for an LA club, Cordy?"
"Willow you look perfect and I second Xander's sexy as hell comment."
Her smile got even bigger. "Thanks. You look amazing. You do too Fred."
"Thanks" "Thanks"
"Where's Buffy?"
"I'm here." Everyone watched as the slayer bounded down the stairs in black leather pants and a green scrap of a shirt.
"What the bloody hell are you wearing, slayer."
"Clothes. What's it to you?"
"You call that a shirt! It doesn't have a back, just strings. Go change. You can't dance in that. Some sweaty guy.."
"That's none of your concern."
"You tell him Buffy." Angel stepped up and put his arm around her shoulders. "I think you look fabulous. Don't you think she looks amazing, Cordy?" He could swear he heard Spike and Cordelia growl at him.
"Yeah Buff. You look great." She forced herself to be pleasant.
"Thanks Cordy. You look nice."
Cordy gritted her teeth. *Nice!* "We should get going soon. I'm just gonna go call a cab." She stomped over to the office.
Angel watched her go. He wanted to make her jealous and get back at Spike, but he hated to see her upset. He left everyone talking and followed Cordelia. He closed the office door behind him. He listened to her on the phone as he closed the blinds.
She hung up the phone and looked over at Angel. "Don't you have a slayer to be drooling over?" She tried to leave but he blocked her path. He grabbed her by the shoulders.
"I was just messing with Spike."
She blew out a breath. "Angel. I'm trying to help Spike and I thought I could count on your support. Apparently I was mistaken." She tried to shrug off his grip but he wouldn't budge.
"He started it!"
"How?"
"He said...he looked at..he was being Spike." He couldn't bring himself to admit he was jealous.
"Angel" He noticed her tone soften. "I thought you were okay with Buffy and Spike's...involvement. I'm sorry this is hard for you. I won't push."
Her words stunned him. He didn't realize he'd let her go until he heard the door open. He slammed it before she could leave.
"Angel!"
"Wait. You don't understand. That's not why I was upset. Look..um..there's something I want to tell you."
"What?" When he didn't say anything, she added. "You can tell me anything."
"Well..you see..we've...dammit!" He gave up his stuttered declaration. He was better at being a man of action.
Cordelia was trying to figure out what was happening. One second she was trying to be a best friend even though her heart was aching. The next Angel's lips were on hers.
Angel stepped back and watched Cordelia's reaction. Groo didn't suddenly show up. She didn't push him away and she didn't hit him. So that was good, but she didn't exactly kiss him back either. She was staring at the wall with a glazed expression and stroking her lips. He was about to panic when her lips started to turn up into a megawatt Cordy smile.
She looked up into his nervous eyes. "I'm still a little confused." She stepped closer. "Do you think you could repeat your explanation."
He smiled. "I'll try to be a little clearer this time." With one hand cupping her cheek and the other gently pushing on the small of her back, Angel brought her lips to his.
Cordelia felt reality spinning away as she opened her mouth at his urging. His insistent tongue explored her mouth before battling her tongue for dominance. For once winning didn't seem to matter. *must breath-no!-don't stop kissing* She reluctantly moved her mouth away to gulp some needed air. She purred as he kissed his way to her ear.
He whispered, "you are so beautiful. The thought of any other man touching you drives me crazy." He sucked her earlobe into his mouth.
"mmm" Her legs turned to jelly as he kissed his way down her neck. She felt his lips latch onto her pulse point. She moaned her approval until what he was doing registered in her mind. She smacked him on the back of his head.
"Oww. What the hell was that for?"
"You were going to mark me!"
He put on his confused face. "I wasn't going to bite you!"
"Duh. I wasn't talking bite. I meant hickey. What are you thirteen? Is this your souled vamp way of marking your property."
He stared at the floor. "Well Spike was right. You do look good enough to eat and there are gonna be a lot of men there tonight." He crossed his arms and stood tall. "I don't want other men to touch you. You're mine!" He wanted to finish strong but it came out more of a whine.
"Angel, you're being ridiculous. Don't you trust me?"
"It isn't about trust. Besides you let Giles kiss you."
"On the cheek"
"I don't care."
"Well too bad. I was considered property in Pylea and I didn't enjoy it. I will not be owned."
"That's not fair. I didn't mean that. I just..fine! Your cab is probably here." He gave her his best sad puppy face.
She reached up and pulled his lips down for another kiss. "Yours are the only lips I want to taste." She kissed her way to his ear and whispered. "I am yours, not to own, not to control but to cherish." She continued to kiss her way to where his pulse would be and lightly bit. She used her tongue to sooth her non-existent mark. She stepped back and searched his darkened eyes. "If you're real good tonight and play nice with the other boys, we'll negotiate marking rights when I come home. OK?"
His face broke out in a full blown smile. "I'll be good."
"That's my sweet manpire." She turned to leave but stopped. "You might want to have the facts of life talk with Connor while we're gone."
"Why?"
She gave him a wicked smile. "Let's just say his eyes weren't the only things bulging when he saw Fred in her new dress."
"What? No way!"
"Afraid so. I think someone has a crush. It all started with the taco lessons. Make sure he doesn't challenge Gunn to battle for the fair maiden's hand. If I find out there was any fighting or if I see that so much as a single drop of blood is spilt, you mister are sleeping on the floor." She heard Willow call her name. "Gotta go." She gave him a quick kiss before rushing off.
Angel watched as the four women, dressed to kill, left the hotel giggling. They looked like carefree young women. He smiled. He trusted her. He looked around the room. Spike, Gunn and Xander were sulking. Giles was trying to engage Connor in conversation. *I want marking rights so it's time to bond*
"Who's up for poker?"
Part 7
Four hours later, four very drunk women came stumbling into the Hyperion. The girls walked together arm in arm.
"...floating three feet off the bed. The sex was amazing!"
"That's a good one, but I can beat that Will. I had shockingly great sex with Spike. It was a marathon of sex. By the time we ended up underneath the rugs, I'd lost feeling in my legs."
"Wow"
"And then he brought out the handcuffs."
"Yeah. That's shocking but I can still beat both of you. Maybe you should sit down for this."
"Oh c'mon. Between me and Buffy, we've done werewolf, lesbian witch, 2 vampires and a government demon hunter. Who or what could you have done to shock us?"
"OK but don't say I didn't warn you. I had shockingly great sex with Giles." She giggled as Buffy and Willow stood there looking like guppies.
"Oh Godess! I need to sit." Willow started to sink to the floor until a giggling Fred helped her to the red couch.
Buffy continued to stand there opening and closing her mouth. Cordy nudged her to join the other two. "You're kidding, right? I mean he's like a dad to us."
Cordy started laughing again. "Maybe to you guys, but for me he was the most amazing lover I've ever had."
"Did ya do it in the library?"
"Will!"
"What? I'm curious. Like you don't wanna know."
Buffy considered it a moment. "Did ya do it on the table? No, in his office on his desk?"
"No. The library was rubble by the time we had sex. I was living in LA at the time."
"I don't understand."
"What, Fred?"
"First, what's so shocking about great sex with Rupert? Second, I thought Groo was your go-all-night-puppydog?"
"Fred sweetie, Rupert was our stuffy high school librarian who could barely tolerate my tactless honesty. He wasn't exactly my fantasy until after I saw him naked." She ignored Buffy's eww and continued. "And while Groo definitely had stamina, he lacked technique. Rupert has both in spades."
"My ears!" Buffy almost fell off the couch when she covered her ears.
"So Fred it's up to you. Can you beat me?"
"Well I only been with Charles a few times and he was my first. Nothing shocking yet."
"That's okay Fred. Shocking can be overrated. Eventually we have to be grown ups and stop having sex with the undead. So far I really hate being a grown up."
"What does Spike look like naked? Is he big?"
"You can't have him Cordy."
"I didn't say I wanted him. I'm just curious. He's all lean and muscley. So is he packin'?"
"It should be illegal for him to wear clothes. He's perfect. God I really hate being mature!" She narrowed her eyes at Cordy's glazed expression. "You can't have him."
"Geez Buffy. For an ex you're pretty possessive. I don't want your vampire. I have my own."
Fred started bouncing. "I knew it. You and Angel have kyerumption and moira."
"Yeah we do but we also have a gypsy curse. It's so not fair. Buffy can do the naked pretzel with Spike as often as she wants but Angel and I have to stave. Gypsy's suck!"
"Yeah they do." Buffy nodded. She was surprised she wasn't really feeling jealous. Well unless Cordy went after Spike, then there was gonna be a smack down.
"No pooping on my happy mood. I have a new challenge. Strangest place you've done it in. I'll go first..again. Oz and I had sex in his van outside of the school. That's why we were late for graduation."
"Good one. Me next. Groo and I had sex in the elevator of our hotel in Mexico. It got stuck between floors and the service guys said it'd take an hour to get us out. I had to keep him occupied. He kept threatening to rescue his princess. I was afraid he might climb up the cables." She laughed. "Poor Groo. He was so sweet, dumb but sweet." She started giggling. "Don't tell Angel this but the hotel didn't charge us for our room because of that. I still have half of Angel's money left over."
"Angel paid for you to go off and fuck your boytoy?"
"Fred! Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?"
"Opps. I'm sorry Cordy. Please don't tell Momma I said that."
"Don't worry sweetie. Your secret is safe with me. Just as long as you don't tell Angel."
"Pooh! Like he'd care. He'd go out to buy you coffee at noon on the sunniest day of the year if you asked him to."
"That's sweet, Fred. A scary visual but sweet."
"Ugh." Buffy rolled her eyes. "I totally win this one. Spike and I had sex on the catwalk in the Bronze."
"What?! Where was I?"
"You guys were down below dancing. He snuck up behind me and..Did I mention how much I hate being a grown up?"
"Why can't you have sex with your vampire anymore? He seems real nice."
"I'm supposed to be in a normal healthy relationship."
"Oh. We don't do normal in LA. It must be a Sunnydale thing. You wanna know what's not fair? The strangest place Charles and I have done it is on the desk in the office. You know he won't even do it in his truck. God forbid we mess up his baby!"
"He probably doesn't want to freak you out. He knows he's your first, right?" She nodded. "You should tell him how you feel. Better yet tell him your favorite fantasy."
"I don't know if I can do that."
"If you can't tell the man you love how to please you, you probably aren't ready to do it in a public place. Oh I know! When I needed that potion, Anita told me about some of their themed rooms. I know it's a brothel but she says couples go there all the time just to rent one of the rooms. You should try that."
"If my parents ever found out I went to a brothel, they'd disown me."
"I won't tell them." Cordy watched as Fred's eyes light up. "I have the number in my rolodex."
Buffy was giggling. "I so do not want to know why you needed a potion from a brothel."
"What did Giles look like naked?"
Cordy started at Willow's question. "Where did that come from?"
"Well I was tryin' not to wonder but I couldn't stop myself. So?"
Cordy's mind drifted back in time. She smiled. "Underneath all that tweed is a mighty fine body. His age shows but it just makes him sexier. The fact that it only took him minutes to make me scream his name was a definite plus. I thought I'd had an orgasm before but Rupert proved me wrong again and again and again. I'd never been so happily exhausted before."
"Do you think you'll get back together again?"
"Rupert is a wonderful, intelligent, kind, generous, caring and passionate man but I am hopelessly and completely in love with Angel. You know, Will. You seem awfully interested in Rupert for a lesbian."
"Oh I'm a lesbian. It's just I'd like to see Giles happy. He really took care of me over the summer even though I tried to kill him."
When she notice Willow coming down from her happy mood, she got an idea. "New challenge but this one is for Willow only." She scooted around the circular couch and put her arm around Buffy. "Be honest. I have a hypothetical question for you. If you could, which one of us would you want to do?"
Willow and Fred started giggling again. "Um..I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know? I'm your best friend. Of course you'd want me!"
"Why would she want a 5 foot powerhouse when she could have me?"
"Hey, I'm 5'2" and I didn't spend most of her life insulting her."
"Well I have long legs and breasts. Besides, I bet her childhood trauma has fueled many a fantasy of her dominating me. C'mon Will fess up."
When Willow turned bright red, Buffy got mad. "You do? I'm your best friend. You should be fantasizing about me."
Fred decided to say something before a fist fight broke out. "Might I remind y'all that this was a hypothetical question and you two are straight."
Buffy and Cordelia's eyes locked. They broke out in a fit of giggles.
"Do you think we'll ever get over our need to compete with each other, Buff?"
"I doubt it, but at least we're able to keep it civil. Angel and Giles would be pretty pissed if I kicked your ass."
"Don't be so sure of yourself slayer. I'm pretty handy with a sword. I kicked Angel and Spikes asses."
"Oh please! Who can't?" She giggled.
"Cordy is it true about you going to the higher realms?"
"Yup"
"Does it mean what I think it means?"
"If you mean am I a higher being than yes."
"Wow! You must have a lot of power."
"I guess"
"I have a hypothetical for you. If I went bad again and came after you, who'd win?"
"Will.."
"There's no harm in just askin' Buff."
"If you embraced the dark mojo and we fought, I'd win."
"Ya think?"
"No. I know."
"C'mon Cordy. You didn't see her. She kicked my ass."
Cordy started giggling. She looked at Willow. "I bet that had to be your secret fantasy since Xander first started to worship at the alter of Buffy."
Willow giggled until she noticed Buffy's frown. "Um..No!..I was all evil. It was horrible. All of it."
"Sure it was. When I said 'I know' I meant it." She cleared her throat. "Willow, I have the power to strip you of your ability to do any magic. If I chose to, you wouldn't even be able to float a pencil."
"Wow"
"Me next. You said you're good with a sword, but could you strip me of my strength if we fought?"
"Buffy, my powers aren't toys. If you went bitch, I would do my best with the fighting skills I have and take my ass kicking if necessary. Now if you decided to start killing innocents or tried to kill any member of my family, I wouldn't hesitate to strip you of your slayer strength and send your skinny ass to jail. You could room with Faith. She still has her strength. I'm sure she'd love to make you her bitch." Cordy noticed how quiet the room got and decided to lighten the mood. "I bet you find me ten times hotter now, huh?"
The red head giggled as she nodded. "Why did you come back?"
"'Cause my family needed me and I needed them."
"They just let you leave?"
"No. I cut a deal. I have a whole new schtik now."
"I thought you were vision girl."
"I still am but I'm also a guide to lost souls."
"Aren't you ever scared about how much power you have?"
"No. The only thing about it that's scary is the responsiblity that comes with it. Don't you agree Buffy?"
"I'll give that a hell yeah!"
Cordelia yawned. "I think we've officially bonded. I say we go to bed."
"You mean separately, right?"
"Yeah Fred. Separately."
The giggling girls helped each other off the couch. They had reached the stairs when Willow stopped.
"Do you think it was a spell that turned the guys into statues?"
The girls looked over at the five men who were in the exact same position they'd been in when they came back.
Cordy yawned again. "I don't know and I'm too drunk to care. We'll worry about it in the morning. Night."
