What is Buffy's real name?
This question has been bugging the crap outta me for a while now. I think I remember reading an article a few years ago that had Buffy's real name as Elizabeth Anne Summers, and The Internet Movie Base also had that as her name at one point. So my question is is Buffy actually her real name or a nickname?

The closet thing we get to an official source in the series itself is her tombstone that says "Buffy Anne Summers". I see little reason to contradict it. |

Buffy is a fairly common nickname for Elizabeth. I don't know if it ever was established that Buffy was Buffy's nickname for Elizabeth, however.

Since on the show she was always called Buffy, when she ran away to L.A. she used her middle name as her name -- and not Liz, Beth, Betsy, Elizabeth, Lizzy, Liza...add your own nickname for Elizabeth here. Then when she died, her gravestone clearly said: Buffy Anne Summers. That it's pretty much a canon fact her name was just Buffy. Why Joyce named her Buffy is the question I want answered.

Yeah, but Buffy's a stuffy, rich girl soriority girl name, not a hippie name. I'm pretty sure Joss chose it because of the Rich Shallow Soriority Girl type of association that went with it. But I suppose Joyce could have just wanted something different..not that it matters, fictional mom and daughter after all.

Buffy used to be a nickname for Elizabeth. I believe the late Mother of Queen Elizabeth (who was also called Elizabeth) had been given the nickname of Buffy when she was young. Dunno if she carried with her into adulthood though.
Not sure that it's used that much as a nickname for Elizabeth these days though. As for Buffy, yes her name was actually Buffy, not a nickname in her case |

We also know thats her name because in "Something Blue" They are doing the invites to the wedding and she is asking Spike what they should put on the cards for his name and he is saying Spike and then she asks "What kind of name is that?" Then Spike asks Buff what kind of name is "Buffy". She responds "Hey, my mother gave me that name."

I'm just sayin'. ETA: Buffy is more of a nickname than an actual one, I believe that's why Buffy's mom's choice of a name for her daughter was so odd. However, there is Buffy Saint-Marie, so...this whole thread is moot, dammit.

But that's a nickname too, isn't it? I think Buffy Sainte- Marie is actually named something like Barbara or Beatrice or something like that.
