Anyway, I think the fact that soap couples don't last long contributed to the rapidness of soap couple shippers. That's why they do all these crazy things compaigning (like bribing undeserving writers with gifts) to keep their couple from imploding. Unfortunately, the lastest development of Jason and Liz (they teased GH fans with this couple for YEARS) reinforced the idea that if you're persistant enough, if you keep sending writers, producers and actors gifts, you will get your couple. The rapidness continues. Speaking of onscreen couple hooking up with real life...this is one of the most common wanks in fandoms. The speculations, the excuses they made for why the actors/actresses weren't affectionate with each other...the real life fics. This happens for every pairing.

It wouldn't be so bad if couples DIDN'T hook up like Brad and Angelina, Melissa Gallo and David Fumero, Nicholas and Emily (I can never remember their names). It happens but it gives hope to everyone who is hoping that their fave character couple moves over to real life. They'll use those examples and try to draw parallels and viola! wank! You are so right about that.

A few months ago I joined a soap board because I was curious over a couple of things but not enough to spend hard cash on the magazines.
All I did was lurk but stopped visiting after a month of nothing but poison and complaints. NO ONE had anything good to say, they just posted snarks and whining about the 'other' person involved with their chosen twosome, and the names they would call the other person were brutal and vile. It was like I imagine what would happen if the nuttier C/A shippers shared a board with the nuttier batch of B/A shippers (hey, you *know* C/A has them too). Snipe, snark, hiss. And no one was getting their hands slapped. Makes me that much more grateful for this board. |

Ahhh, Roswell. Those fans (the Dreamers) make the Kittens and Ducks look like sweet widdle puppies and lambs by comparison. I'll never forget the 38 pages of hate devoted to Jason Behr because he was captured in a snapshot looking at Katherine Heigl (who was his LONG time RL love interest during the show) the way that Max was only supposed to look at Liz. Those people were KEE-razy. Their hatred for EDR in no way rivaled the depth of their hatred for KH. And the sad thing is that many of them, now GA fans who worship at the alter of Meredith and Mer/Der (yeah, 'ship names totally suck), STILL hate KH with the passion of a thousand fiery suns.

I thank the little baby Jesus (and the grown Jesus) every single day that I found this board. I honestly don't think I would have stayed in this fandom without it. In fact, I know I wouldn't have.
And now back to the regularly scheduled wanking. LOL

I think the bulk of the Roswell wank, if not all of it, came before the days of F_W. I know it came before F_W migrated to journelfen, and I don't think many of the previous wanks made it into the archives. I think most of the LJ wanks were gone when F_W got TOSed. And speaking personally, the wanks I remember came from another board altogether where you had to register and be approved by a mod before you could even lurk. Which is too bad, because really, I think I'd get quite a chuckly from it all now. Back then, I was mostly horrified and yet couldn't stop reading. It was like a train wreck.

You're right, it was probably on Blurty. But I was hoping something would've made its way onto Journalfen.

Yay, someone else who remembers the character That's true, she did get to ride off into the sunset, so much better than what happened to other characters I liked.

Wow. This thread is quite entertaining. I too was extremely clueless about wank and it's meaning, and found myself often lost and confused when discussed on this board. Though I have come across it in the past and it scared me quiet literally. I was afraid to join this board for that exact reason and it took me a year of lurking befire I finally joined.
I feel the exact same here.

I dunno, I saw a lot of Usenet flamewars over operating systems that I don't think mere TV can touch. That's not even counting groups like alt.flame, which were about nothing at all except calling other posters names in the most cutting and creative ways possible. You had to have Kevlar skin just to subscribe. (I keep saying, people who think Whedonverse fandom is "tough" haven't gotten out much. Whedonverse fandom isn't even hard time.)

Heck, my Angel/Mrs. Field website (in 30 minutes or less!) came from an earlier thing I did as a way to tweak a single person off by getting her favorite Trek personalities (ie. Buh Bye Archer, Buh Bye Trip, Buh Bye B'Elanna Warning: Bad midi music ahoy!) voted off the "island" in the summer Survivor Trek game amongst the newsgroup denziens. I didn't care who won, just that I was annoying this single person. Every web site I made resulted in a landslide of getting her choice voted off. \o/ And Steve Christensen who completely pwned anyone who tangled with him. He was utterly brilliant. Damn, I still miss him.
