Don't hate Minear at all. And I liked quite a few of his episodes. I just find it interesting now that the shows are starting to get some distance on them, more and more of the writers are coming out to state their opinons, as opposed to just the party line. Or maybe I should say the opinions seem to slip out. I'm sure no one wants to piss off Joss in case he is "hot" again.

I do recall that he was very good at writing Angel but I don't think that makes him a good writer. Even if it's not an ensemble show you should always be able to write well for every character, even if one is your voice. I don't think it's OK to sacrifice or write other characters, OOC just because it's easier or you don't understand them and get credited as being a great writer, but that's just my opinion.

I never said he was a great writer, I just said he wrote a great Angel. "Darla" still remains my favorite episode of either show.

I liked the commentary Minear did for the AtS DVDs.

Ahh, reading an interview with Minear that mentions Cordy and Charisma plus manages to both piss people off and draw praise. Takes me back, that does. Good times, good times.

But of course.

Pretty scary that the majority of us are over AtS and all that crap yet we can still debate the moral ethics of Fury, Minear, and the AtS crew.

Well. And well that you do! 'Cause that's just a whole weird area right there. But explains a lot, I guess, when you think about it.

I'm looking forward to the E True Story version where everyone is so eager for their screen time they'll spill it all. Cuz, dammit, I'm still interested. And others will be with me-there's enough interest to make this a three page thread.

Hm, I don't get the hate for Tim Minear either. I have to agree that he had a fantastic grip on Angels character, just like I consider David Greenwalt the best Cordelia writer. I think between them they managed to do a pretty good job with AtS. IMHO Angel started to go down when they both left the show. Together they wrote most of my fav Angel episodes ever.

... and I totally adore Wonderfalls. It's a shame that the show never got a full season.

The one thing that I noticed about Minear's episodes, is that it seemed liked he didn't see Cordelia as anything more than comedy relief. Take the Pylean saga for example;

Over the Rainbow by Mere Smith - The gang is searching frantically on how to save Cordelia, Cordelia has to put up with all sorts of crap from the Pyleans

Through the Looking Glass by Tim Minear - the debut of the Groosalugg, Cordelia wants to take all the jewels with her when they escape

There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb by David Greenwalt - the only finale where Cordy kills the bad guy

I don't have Minear "hate". I just think he's yet another example of an ME writer who let online fandom get to his head and allowed his online minions to swell his ego to proportions that aren't justifiable by any evidence available to me. I think his ME writing was inconsistent - he did write well for male characters, but was either incapable or unwilling to write meaningful intelligent dialogue for female characters who didn't fall into the category of a madonna or a whore.

It's entirely possible that his writing on subsequent shows (like "Wonderfalls") was an improvement, and that he's better now than he was then - but I won't watch him on principle, because I do think he was a significant part of the ME group-think cabal that felt they had to tear down the Cordelia character. That, and his obvious suck-up-iness to certain Bangels online. But I don't have to hate someone in order to have no interest in ever watching their work again.

ETA: That, and listening to his online Succubus interview at the end of Season 4, which gave me the distinct impression that he was probably a bit of a jerk. His constant references to "a pregnant woman" as an excuse for certain storylines grated mightily.

Yeah, What Platy Said.™

(And seriously. You have to wonder about a guy who's that into hookers and rape. I really feel I cannot overstate this. Wasn't it Little Joe himself who mentioned rage issues...?)

Minear sucks. They all suck. Except for Greenwalt.

Rage issues? I had heard something about a prior dark spiral into heavy drugs which supposedly was the inspiration for Angel's "desires" (aside: Hey! I'm all about writing what you know) but nothing about the actual psychological issues that came out in his writing.

Or am I being an asshat by querying into a writer's life that we tend to say no to on an actor's? "cause I'm curious because there were elements of Timmah!'s writing that I found intriging but like it's been said, his writing for anyone who wasn't Angel or Darla underwhelmed on a consistant basis.
