Disappearing accounts: What's up with that?!

In the months since we upgraded the board software to v3.0, a handful of regular or semiregular users have tried to log in only to learn that their user IDs have disappeared. All their posts are left intact (albeit reset to Guest status), and I don't think anyone has had any trouble reregistering under their previous username, but the question of why their accounts vanished in the first place still vexes.

I'm gonna be honest: I have no idea what's making that happen. I've tried to find out, and it's escaping me. But here's what's not happening:

1. Your account is not being deleted on purpose.

2. Your account is not being deleted by an admin.

3. Your account is not being deleted by hacker activity, either.

4. Your account is not being deleted in any automatic purge that deletes accounts if you don't visit every X number of days/weeks/months.

The closest I've come to tracking down a cause is that it's perhaps it's an underdetected and exceedingly picayune bug in v3. We just installed a major update -- in fact, three of them -- and I'm hoping this behavior has gone away for good now.

In the meantime, if your username has gone missing, please reregister then send me a PM letting me know the sitch. I should be able to merge your old account information (posts and whathaveyou) with the new. At any rate, I'm up for trying.
