The (New) Bionic Woman
The pilot for the Bionic Woman remake is available ON DEMAND. So I gave it a shot.
It wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen, but it did leave me a tad underwhelmed. It's a bit slow, and sort of washed out. And you can sorta feel that they are trying real hard to make sure people take it seriously, despite it being based on a "cheesy" show from the 1970s. A lot of things happened that made me stop and think, "And here's a 'serious drama' moment." The actress playing Jamie is also underwhelming. It's not so much that she was bad in the acting department, but she didn't have a lot of charisma. But maybe she just needs to warm up to the role. I also don't get why they are calling the character Jamie Sommers when she has absolutely nothing in common with the Jamie Sommers from the original series. She's a completely different character, except for the name. I don't see why the made all the changes to the character to begin with. But, if they were going to change everything from her occupation, to where she lived, to how she got hurt, to her hair color, why not change the name too? Also, the little sister bugged the crap out of me.

I saw that the pilot was up at ON DEMAND. Not only won't I see it early but to be honest I probably won't watch the series once its' on either.
A week or so ago I was switching around on the radio and hit a little story on NPR. They were saying that the writers of the show didn't actually want people who are old enough to have watched the original show when it was first-run to watch it now. Their reasoning for this improbable statement was that it is an entirely different show and that people who grew up with it would most likely be disappointed. They noted that the character who plays Jamie is much younger this time around and that unlike the old show, who thought the technology at her disposal was pretty cool and kept wondering what other nifty stuff it could be made to do, the new character is almost afraid of it and basically calls herself a monster. (After seeing the pilot, would you agree with this DB?) They spoke to a couple who are both old enought to have seen it as children and they said what surprised them the most was the violence. That the old show really had none and this one had a bunch within the first five minutes. So . . . should I watch it or should I just sigh every time I see Lindsay Wagner hawking Sleep Comfort beds on commercials? |

We saw the premiere at Comic-Con in July. We liked it well enough, so we're going to give it a shot, just like we did for "Lost".

The pilot is also available on Amazon Unbox for those who don't get On Demand. Having seen it, the only word that comes to mind is "horrible", for most of the same things DB noted. And no, I'm not a BW:TOS fan.

This is getting a fair bit of coverage in the UK due to Michelle Ryan playing the lead.
I'd heard that the pilot shown back in July has had a lot of work done to it, that it isn't the pilot to be shown with the series. (Similiar to the original BtVS pilot). Danny - is this the one you saw, or have they released the newer one? As for Michelle Ryan, I can't say I ever really rated her much. She used to be in EastEnders and was part of one of the biggest storylines to hit the soap when she discovered her older sister, Kat, was in fact her mother (and that her father was their Uncle Harry who had raped Kat when she was 13.) I always found her performances patchy, and I never found her that attractive. However, she seemed to do pretty well in Jekyll, so I shall probably give Bionic Woman a try. |

As someone who hated the idea but loved the execution of the "reimagined" Battlestar Galactica (created by, I believe, the same people who are creating the new BW), I don't have a problem with a similarly reimagined Jaime Sommers. I do have a problem with a badly done Jaime Sommers, but I'm willing to give them more than one ep to prove themselves. Two ought to do it, I think. Beyond that and they'll have lost me. (Or I may tune in through Katee Sackhoff's run, since her presence is a draw. Isaiah Washington, otoh, not so much.)
Am I the only one who thinks "Blair Witch" every time I see BW? Or shall I just assume I was too heavily involved in fandom back when that movie was out...?

Kind of sad, but given my current lack of television viewing time, not a horrible loss. KS is in for, what, 5 eps? Surely I can make it that long.

Yeah? I thought she was a regular. With time off, of course, to film that other show... Something about a space ship?

Kristen over on E!Online is reporting that, according to some "insiders" who've managed to see the second episode, it's worse than the pilot. Since a lot of people were hoping the kinks in the pilot would start getting ironed out in episode two, that doesn't bode well.
And I want to be one of these "insiders" who gets to see episodes before everyone else.

Well, this was NOT the same pilot thet we saw at Comic-Con. We're only half way through it, and they've totaly changed the dynamic between Jamie and her sister. In fact, her sister was deaf in the one we saw. She had also hired an older lady to watch after her, not two hot teenager, and she wasn't dumped on her sister's doorstep either. IIRC correctly, their parents had been killed. I wonder how much more they changed.

I've really tried to get into this show, but it just isn't working for me. The only character that I'm enjoying is the bad bionic woman (Sara Corvis). She keeps it interesting. The leading lady brings no life to the role. And the bratty sister isn't helping. Neither is the Isiah character. The fighting is the worst choreographing I've seen in quite a while. Just bad tv imo.
