I forgot to give my recs.
Don't know if you've heard of them or not, but the Blood Ties series is pretty popular. And was the basis of a (sadly) short-lived series that I really liked. So you can read the books, then watch the episodes, and have a fine old time. And, for something a little different, you can try The Dark Series by Christine Feehan. They're vampire/romance novels, so they're great if you like both. To date, there are 19 books in the series. I remember reading a bunch of them a few years back, and they were very intense, both in the romance department, and in the darkness and violence departments.

I liked the Blood Ties series better, too Danny. The writing was stronger and more adult (not so much of the teenage sturm and drang). I especially enjoyed Huff's bi-sexual and gay characters. It's nice to see all forms of love and romance in a series.
Don't know if you guys read Barbara Hambly, but I'd recommend her James Asher vampire series, which includes Those Who Hunt the Night and Traveling With the Dead. I also loved George R. R. Martin's Fevre Dream. |

I thought she was joking when she said that as well. Carlie I could get behind, but seriously--who sticks a poor little baby with a name like Renesmee? It actually makes Nessie look normal by comparison. Ugh. I fear I am actually turning into one of those bitter fans. Or I would have been if I hadn't started a new book which is really quite lovely...

I admit it, at least a small part of me was watching the series to see if they would go there. But my interest was purely scientific, believe me. It had nothing to do with the fact that the two male leads were both smokin' hot, and had all kinds of sparkage going on.

LOL Right there with ya. Henry and Mike had more chemistry together than Vicky did with either of them.

Reading Lolita in Tehran. It's like a brisk cleansing of the palate after the treacly badness that was Breaking Dawn. I highly recommend!

I"m a librarian, and I consumed the first book via audiobook in February or March. I know it had been popular with teens in our library system, and I do enjoy YA lit. So I thought I'd find out what was going on.
I wasn't impressed. I didn't LOVE it, but I'm also not the true intended audience. There are some series I adore, though, so that's not always a hindrance. But with this one, I couldn't tell what caused the great popularity. I will probably see the movie, though, even if it's just, via DVD because RP is pretty, KS is a good actress and Taylor (Jacob) appeared in a Robert Rodriguez movie. (I'm not quite enough of a movie geek, but those are my reasons.)

I think I'm the only teenage *the few that picks up a book in my school* that actually don't like Twilight and sadly enough, I'm only half way through the book and I'm getting annoyed with it. The main character, Isabella or Bella or whatever, is graining my nerves. She's seriously, gullible and eccentric. Edward is interesting, probably only because he was described as being hot and there's the much added bonus of being vampiric. Other than that... not that interesting to me, plotwise. There are a million usually male vampire-female human love stories on the net and books written about the plot. It's just so... ack and typical. Plain, ordinary girl getting the gorgeous guy who is all into her and lots of romance feelings come about? Maybe some teens swoon for that crap, but I like to puke. I KNOW I shouldn't have even picked up a book that was quickly labeled as romance and all. I prefer a hell of a lot more action in my romance, as far as this is heading, not so much on that part of death and mayhem. But anyways... I'm just complaining because I seen this thread and I checked out the book today.

I haven't read the Twilight books, admittedly. My library doesn't have them, and I am not spending money on a book I might hate and chuck across the room in a fit of annoyed rage. And according to my friends who have read the books, I might end up doing that. So until I can borrow them or my library stocks them, I will be in the dark on Stephanie Myers books.
I can make some great recommendations though, as urban fantasy books are my favorite genre. The Night-Huntress novels, Half-Way to the Grave and One Foot in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost are excellent. Entertaining, with a good plot and an excellent main character. Bones the vampire is a little like Spike, but with his own unique history that sets him apart. And the books are just HOT. The Dark-Hunters series by Sherrilyn Kenyon is entertaining. Not earth-shatteringly original, but it has its own interesting mythos that ties in nicely with the Greek Gods, and Atlantis. The plots of the books are all similiar, but they're fast-paced and the porn is lovely. (cuz we all know we flip through the books to get to the that). I'm not a fan of Kenyon's female characters (with the exception of Simi and Tabitha), but the men are always fascinating. The Mercy Thompson novels by Patricia Briggs are also really, really good. The writing is fantastic, the setting and characters are really unique. The main character Mercy is a skinwalker--a girl who can turn into a coyote. She's a mechanic, and her boss is a fey, her friend a vampire, her ex a werewolf, and her neighbor (and major love interest) the Alpha male for the whole city. They're just amazing books. Another series I'm enjoying is Stray and Rogue by Rachel Vincent. It's not a vampire novel, but the characters are well-drawn and very human for all that they're actually were-cats. The main character is highly fallible, which you don't see much. Usually the girls of these books can do no wrong. Not Faith. When she messes up, she messes up big time. Another series that I can never recommend enough is the Zodiac Series by Vicki Petersson. It's not vampires, but the mythology in the series, along with the characters, the setting (Las Vegas), the action...pretty much everything about the series makes it truly amazing. Joanna Archer might be my favorite superhero ever....mostly because she makes mistakes, she does the wrong thing, and she owns up to it. Seriously, just give the books a looky-loo. You won't be disappointed. There are a couple of series I'll recommend you skip too. The Blood Ties series by Jennifer Armintrout is at the top of that list. I hated the main character, and all of the supporting characters. It's just a sucky series of books. The Sisters of the Moon series by Yasmine Galenorn is also truly awful. Skip them and save yourself the trouble of vomiting on the books.

OMG, I tried to read the first Jennifer Armintrout book and I rolled my eyes so much I got a headache.
You're right, Syn. Sucky main character, sucky supporting characters and a plot that went no where. I finally stopped trying to read it after the main vampire guy kept complimenting the main character during sex by telling her how sexy and adventurous and kinky she was because she was doing it with him doggy style. A much, much better vampire series is JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. I highly rec it. |

I read one of the Dark Hunters books by Kenyon, and I was enjoying it all the way until the end except that the end was SO lame, it ruined my enjoyment of the whole thing. And her mythology while interesting was also confusing to me. So I gave it a pass though I know she's popular.
