Reviving this thread since JK is on her book tour and revealing background tidbits, and my question for the day is - am I the only one who just never wondered about Dumbledore's sexuality?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071020/...s_harry_potter Don't get me wrong - I actually remain amazed at the level of detailed background and planning that JK has/had for each of her characters, and I think she's cool for not trying to gloss over what to her must have been a key point of "who" Dumbledore was, but I never realized that there had been speculation one way or the other. About Sirius, Lupin and Snape - OMG, yes. But not Dumbledore. Live and learn.

In the sense that everyone/thing else got slashed, I figure it had to exist. I personally couldn't care less though.

Never thought about it and don't really care one way or the other.

Nope. And to be honest I never wondered about the others (Sirius, Lupin etc..) either. Who was doing who, or wanted to, was never my top priority. |

I never wondered about it until Book 7. When the Grindlewald stuff came up, I looked at that, looked at the fact that Dumbledore had since never married, and just assumed - in the way that only a gay man can - that they were lovers.
Got to say, I'm surprised I was proven right, I always assumed it would be just one of those things that I KNEW but was never confirmed. I'm glad that Rowling has confirmed it, because the theme of accepting others, and celebrating our differences is something that runs deep through the book. So, we can at least say there is a gay character - not a flaming 'mo - who is a positive role model in the biggest series of children's literature on the planet. This is A Good Thing. But it's done in a subtle way that children won't actually pick up on, and nor will their parents. I guess what I'm saying is, it's nice to have another weapon in the armoury. One day, in some conversation somewhere, I feel secure in the knowledge that I can pull out "Well, you know Dumbledore was gay, right?" |

Well, I'm glad I wasn't the only one!!! Although, I take your point Bert - Dumbledore's fascination with Grindelwald did seem to go beyond platonic "friendship" attraction. In either case, if it makes some people happy, I too am glad that Rowling has fessed up and didn't try to be coy about it.
By the way, she also mentioned that Neville eventually marries Hannah Abbott, who became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron. Handy, since Neville teaches at Hogwarts, if I'm not mistaken.

Hmmm... with all these little bits that keep coming from JK, I'm thinking the encyclopedia that was rumoured definitely needs to come out. She clearly knows so much about all her characters... and it's annoying me that I'm hearing about it all in little bits and snatches of interviews...

I asked my just-away-to-college daughter who grew up alongside Harry Potter what she thought and she was surprised. She said that it ranks right up there with all of the fuss that was made over which Teletubby may or may not be gay. She loved the character of Dumbeldore; wore Halloween costumes of characters; had posters and videos and action figure thingies; had themed-sleepovers, and never wondered, never cared. |

I also never wondered and never cared. And to be frank, I find the idea of Dumbledore as a sexual being at all slightly disturbing. He's just supposed to be Dumbledore in my world. I don't have the same problem with the other characters--Remus and Sirius, for example, can snog till the cows come home (and probably have). But for whatever reason, I prefer my Dumbledore as a slightly distant paternal figure of authority and nothing more.

I'd say that's about right. I always imagined a girl I knew from school to be Lavender... I guess she didn't make the final cut, but this girl doesnt look entirely different.

You know, I never really had a visual image of Lavender so I can't see if it's a good or bad casting call.
On a bright note, I guess that means they're not cutting that storyline out of HBP...yay, more Ron screen time

Call me weird, but I've never had a clear visual image of ANY of them; I always see the various actor's faces. Probably because I saw three movies before I started in on the books. So if it's someone who hasn't been in one of the movies yet, they just have a generic male/female face. I guess maybe I just do that to hold a place until the actor is cast? Who knows. So for me, yea, she looks just like I thought she would! |

And I misread the initial description of Draco (Apparently he's blonde), to me, he'll always be a brunette. |

As the lucky winners of the £1.9M auction, Amazon has posted pics of The Tales of Beedle the Bard on their site. So if you've never seen a really really really expensive book, now's your chance.
