Variety Article on Play Nice

UPN OKs pilot at last minute
Net's sibling laffer radiates Charisma

UPN has greenlit an 11th-hour comedy pilot inspired by the lives of former "Conan O'Brien" scribe Andrew Secunda and his sister, UTA agent Ruthanne Secunda.

Cast-contingent pilot finally got the go-ahead last week after Charisma Carpenter ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") signed on to play Sarah, the role inspired by Ruthanne, while Tyler Labine ("My Boss's Daughter") was tapped as Alex, the character based on Andrew.

Paramount Network TV, the Littlefield Co. and Nervous Properties are behind the untitled Andrew Secunda project; Warren Littlefield and Adam Chase ("Friends") will exec produce, while Secunda will co-exec produce.

The pilot presentation's official logline describes the show as a "comedy about an uptight, career-minded woman and her fun-loving brother."

Idea for the laffer took root last fall, when Andrew came to Los Angeles for the Emmy Awards and crashed at Ruthanne's place. It was supposed to be a quick visit -- until Ruthanne fell down and broke her ribs.

Andrew wound up staying with Ruthanne for months, helping her out as she regained her health.

The catch: Ruthanne actively works with animal adoption, serving on the board of directors as exec VP of the Much Love Animal Rescue foundation. With Ruthanne temporarily incapacitated, Andrew had to step in.

"He had to stay with me and take care of my animals," Ruthanne said. "He got sucked into it all. The two of us eventually drove each other crazy. And in a role reversal, he became the caretaker in our relationship."

Andrew had been working on a sitcom pitch about a boyfriend and girlfriend; he and Ruthanne quickly realized that concept should be revised to reflect their own quirky sibling relationship.

"Lo and behold, the reality of it was playing out in front of us," she said. "So we pitched it together."

Project is only loosely based on the pair: Carpenter's character is a corporate attorney, rather than an agent, for example.

The Secundas originally set the project up at Universal, which later passed; UPN then quickly got Viacom sibling Paramount on board.

Carpenter's other credits include "Angel" and the telepic "See Jane Date," while Labine also appeared in the series "That Was Then."

I get the distict impression that CC's involvement was very important to getting this thing off the ground!

It does indeed sound as if Charisma's participation was the dealmaker on this project -- good for her!!

Now that I've read the background, I'm even more interested to see the series. Can't wait.

Thanks Kika! In so many ways, this seems tailor made for Charisma. Being on UPN could be a blessing or a curse - but the fact that the show is owned by an affiliated company (Paramount) bodes well for UPN giving the show a decent chance to find an audience.

Cannot. Wait.

Wow! That's really cool, the wording of the article does suggest that the green-light was contigent upon getting CC (or someone of CC's level). That's rather happily surprising.

It sounded like an interesting concept and I really did like what I read of the sides. Getting the background information is added icing to a really great cake. I hope this works out and it gets picked up for the fall.

Nice!!!! Charisma might become the next power player in Hell-ywood, especially if the show gets decent ratings for the UPN...

Now who wants to bet that the old Buffy/Angel stars will pop in once in awhile. Imagine Nicky coming onboard as guest star as a fleeting love interest to Charisma's character Sarah.

I have to admit I'm a little nervous about this being on UPN, they don't have a great record with drama's so far.

But this could be the one to break their record. And even if it's not a huge hit given the mortality rate of pilots, especially these days, I think this is a great opportunity for CC to show her dramatic chops. It could give her more exposure and maybe a shot on one of the main networks. Hey, there's enough new L&O's out there for everyone.

It sounds like she's a little more outgoing and ambitious than AHD's character, and perhaps a stronger character given her drive and the setting.

Go CC! This rocks--and it sounds like a really excellent start for CC.

My local comcast affiliate doesn't carry UPN. Katy, I'll be driving to your house each week to see this. Get the futon ready.

Kar if I read the article correctly it's a 1/2 sitcom so the whole drama scare isn't going to affect this. If this was a UPN drama I'm be biting my nails by now UPN does have a good deal going with their sitcoms but the interesting thing is they're mostly urban sitcoms. This is going to be something different for them so it's still hit or miss.

On another note, CC's character "Sarah" sounds like a cross between Cordy/Jane/Serena with a little bit of CC mixed in.
