Oh Quantum Leap cheesed me off something fierce; I think maybe because the whole premise behind the show was about his pursuit to make it home. That last hour had me screaming at my tv, and not in a good way. It was utterly depressing to know that all this time he'd been fighting to get home, he'd been lying to himself the entire time.
Oh, and uh, back to the topic at hand...I didn't see the 'real' end so as far as I know, the show ended at Cordy's departure.

I got the 'message' of the finale - in S2, Angel realizes that if nothing they do matters, thant all that matters is what they do - I *get* that, and I would have been okay with that ending, if Joss hadn't gutted Angel's team like he did. Cordelia and Wes *should* have been there, fighting with Angel shoulder to shoulder in that alley, like they deserved to be, because his mission was their mission. Who else would go down with him?
Instead, Cordy dies. Fred dies. Wes dies. Gunn was as good as. Spike, much as l loved him and was glad to see that he wasn't dead after Chosen, didn't truly belong like Wes or Cordy did. |

Now that two years have passed, I can say that the Angel finale has grown on me. I like the idea of them fighting to the bitter end. At the initial airing it pissed me off. But retrospectively I enjoy it. More so than Buffy's actually.

Having not actually seen the so-called "real end," I'm not exactly qualified to comment, but I will say that I'm not a fan of the idea. I get what fighting to the bitter, bloody end is trying to say about the fight between good and evil, but if I had actually still cared about the show and the characters and then seen the finale, I think I would have been kinda upset. I mean, they all die. It sort of makes all the struggles and everything they went through on my TV screen for five years seem futile and pointless. Whatev. At least if Angel died he could finally be reunited with Cordy on that afterlife dimensional tropical beach (wearing a plaid shirt!) like so many of us envisioned. ***argel***

the end reminds me of that Newhart show -- you guys know the one "Newhart" I think it was called ('cause he also had the "Bob Newhart Show" -- the one where he worked in Vermont or something. Difference being I thought the end with him waking up beside Emily was hilarious; just fantastic. The whole thing with Bobby on Dallas always confused me ... though I've only ever seen reruns (same with Newhart though). And same with Alias when Sidney was supposedly gone for a year or so (but I admit I stopped watching after that; actually b4 that) ... it made me wonder if the entire time I'd been watching Alias if the series had been set a year in the past or if when Sidney came back the show was now a year in the future? Anyway...

Never saw the finale for AtS or BTVS (as many know), but I do know that the finales of THESE shows sucked:
(1) Forever Knight - worst finale ever... for a show that I was still watching and that I still sort of liked. (2) Seinfeld - horrific lack of judgment. (3) Roseanne - the whole last season was a nightmare (literally). (4) ST: Voyager - any good things I might have felt about the ending of the series were negated by the very real "What the hell?" hangover of Chakotay/Seven. (5) Xena - loved the show until they literally crucified Xena and Gabrielle, and then had them face off angel-devil style. It all went downhill from there (most notably with the whole Livia/Eve cough*Connor*cough plot line), and I felt as though the finale was a real let-down. On the other hand, my favorite finales include: (1) Futurama - brilliant, just brilliant. (2) Six Feet Under - once they killed Nate off, the rest was sort of a relief. And I loved the ending montage. (3) Friends - I hadn't watched the show for a number of years, but I did tune in for the finale and I found it supremely satisfying. (4) ST: The Next Generation - "All Good Things" was a really wonderful way to wrap up the series. It's a shame that the movies that followed kind of cheapened a really good ending. (5) M.A.S.H. - I'm probably dating myself on this board, but yes - I did watch the finale of M.A.S.H. when it first aired. And I thought it was tremendous - particularly the out-of-nowhere smooch between Hawkeye and Hot Lips! Somewhat tainted by the awful "After M.A.S.H." (6) Newhart - also rather brilliant. Finales I have mixed feelings about (1) ST: Deep Space 9 - It's odd, because it is hands-down my favorite of the Treks, and I enjoyed almost every season immensely, but I did not particularly care for the finale. For one thing, I never wanted Odo/Kira to get together, so the whole scene with him rejoining the Link was lost on me. I didn't like the fact that Sisko left Cassidy and Jake to be with the Prophets. I didn't care for Bashir/Dax. The Bashir/O'Brien good-bye left me a bit emotional, though. (2) Remington Steele - I don't remember hating it. But I don't remember liking it either. (3) Cheers - I remember thinking that the drunk cast antics on Leno after the finale aired was more amusing than the actual show itself. It rubbed me the wrong way that Sam ended up all by himself in the bar - I'm not sure why, but I didn't like it.

Of the ones you mentioned that I've seen, Plat, I agree. Seinfeld was...well, it wasn't horrific because I didn't care enough about it. It wasn't funny. At all. It mostly just left me feeling detached, with a sort of "What in the heck was THAT?" running through my head. The only thing I enjoyed about Seinfeld's finale was the retrospective with that Green Day song; now that I still remember fondly.
M.A.S.H. I remember vaguely. I know my family watched it, but most of what I remember was the storyline with the chicken-that-wasn't-really-a-chicken, and that was hard for me to process. I think I sort of wish I hadn't watched it. And I never watched the series and didn't care for Hawkeye (although I do sort of love Arnie Vinick). Friends was awesome! I went to a viewing party and watched with several (slightly tipsy) fans; much fun was had by all. But by far the best finale I've ever seen was Dawson's Creek. I know the show was regarded as a teen soap by many, and the last two seasons sucked space waste. But the finale just resounded emotionally very deeply for me, and I still watch it every once in a while. And it still makes me cry. And because I love that finale so, I still have affectionate feelings for the series. As opposed to AtS, where the end of Cordelia (and any semblance to the series I *started* watching) killed any fondness I might have had for the series. Oh, I'll occasionally watch a season 1-3 repeat if it's a good Cordelia ep, but the rest of the series I couldn't care less about, and the latter seasons I actively avoid. I'm really looking forward to TWW's finale. I think my respect for this series has actually grown in the last few weeks. Normally by the end of a series I've already quit watching.

"Northern Exposure" had a really good finale, I thought. Plenty of people had lost their investment in the show during that last season, and I didn't watch it as regularly as I used to, either. But watching Cecily, Alaska close down for the night one last time, accompanied by Iris DeMent's "Our Town," brought unexpected tears to my eyes.

I agree with Cal, Cordelia and Wesley should've been standing side by side with Angel in, what I assumed, the final battle. But since I knew nothing of the sort would happen far before the finale, I wasn't too dissappointed in the end.
And true, America, or most people in general are so used to happy endings that when the opposite happens it's just plain horrible. I, on the other hand, am so sick of happy, go-lucky endings, that when the ending is sad and in some way shows that there is no actual happy ending, I genuinely like it. Guess it's the Angst-- Anybody who knows me, knows that I LURV the Angst. So I was very much staisfied with the ending of Angel -- in which it basically showed all of Angels loved ones getting hurt like they always do, leaveing Angel to fight HIS battle all on his own, like he always has, and always will --until it kills him. Now that's ANGST.

I found it very satisfying because every last on of those f**kers died. No one will convince me they could have survived by slipping into the sewers or any other way, so for me they got what they deserved. Angel lost my affection when he slit Cordy's wrist, just left her behind and told them all to forget her. Not to mention all of them forgetting about her all during S5. So, yeah, they can all die miserably in a dung pile for all I care. I still wish it had been a bus.

The AtS finale was the suckiest finale to ever suck.
I'm glad they all died. Except for Gunn. My poor, character-assassinated Gunn.
