I don't know why the houses are hard to sell but I do know that while the man was genius alot of times his idea of "form" got in the way of "function". My "hometown" has many of his works including the Johnson Wax Admin building.

The columns were fluted and expand outward to resemble waterlilies and the bottom of a pond looking up...and while it's gorgeous and brilliant (aside: Every school kid here took tours of JWax and the Golden Rondelle at one time or another), they supposedly have leaked like a sieve because of a design flaw since the first time it rained and I don't think they've ever found a way to completely fix the problem.

It's probably one of the reasons that many of the main administrative buildings have moved to a new facility inspired by FLW but not created by him.

If the "Crawford Street Mansion" has fundimental design flaws that make it a neverending money pit, it's likely why no one has been willing to take it on even as a piece of history.

Along the lines of form serving better than function, I've also read that much of his furniture is exceedingly uncomfortable to sit in, and often placed in such a way to make conversation difficult. But he wouldn't ever allow them to be moved so much as an inch, nor would he allow them to be modified in any way.

When I visited Fallingwater the docents talked about the versatility of the furniture and how when the Kaufmanns had large parties FLW designed chairs to move to the dining area and after dinner back to the lounge. Maybe he only approved if he chose it!

Also, I live fairly close to his Pope-Leighey house and the furniture that you can see in the link you're invited to sit on for the docent's big number. It's pretty comfortable-doesn't beat a modern couch but is as good as anything else from the '40s.

Could be, Tc, could be! I've never been to a real FLW structure (there being rather a dearth of them in Texas), so my knowledge is limited to a long ago exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art (furniture) and books and film. Especially a PBS minis-series about his life, which I loved.

No, wait--I have been to the Guggenheim, and if I'm not mistaken there was either a replica or an actual room created by FLW at the Met.

That does seem really uncomfortable, for anybody.

The Guggenheim Is pretty amazing. isn't it? I forget to look at the art because I'm so busy looking at the art it's housed in! There is a FLW house at the Met-the Little house-and their library is in some museum in Pittsburg. That's gotta be weird for family members to visit. They are in museums instead of the house they belong in because, as Morrigan said, the house was hard to sell. But that was in the '60s and the '70s when his stuff was just starting to be put in historic perspective and people weren't yet as comfortable with modern design. I think that if one of his houses came on the market today and it wasn't sliding into a canyon that there would be no shortage of interested people with large amounts of cash. He's now recognized as a master and his buildings are sometimes soggy but still art.

To be perfectly honest, the only reason I go to the Guggenheim is the building and the...well, not novelty. The experience, I guess. Modern art is really not my thing.

And you know, I'm surprised that there aren't buyers lined up even though the building is sliding into a canyon. It seems surprising that someone with way more greenstuff than me isn't interested in buying and refurbishing a FLW house.

Given that there's an awful lot of greenstuff floating around there, I'm surprised too. Do we know what the asking price is? Is it really for sale?

ETA-According to the website that Laurie posted it is in a trust and is a museum. I didn't do my homework.

Well, you could end up with just the site (or half a site) if it slides down the hill. I suspect that part of the issue is that you'd never get permission to alter the house and LA seems all about people buying property and changing it to fit their personalities. This is not a city with much of a sense of history - people buy famous properties so they can rip them down and build new ones.

There is also the issue that FLW houses are often beautiful, but as others have pointed out, not exactly well designed to last. They sometimes leak or have structural flaw that take a lot to fix. The one in Barnsdale Park (also near Griffith Park) has been under repair for ages. That's owned by the city but they haven't had it open for at least 3 years.

*sigh* I guess the idea of one sliding into the canyon just really makes me sad, and I feel like someone *should* do something about it. Someone who is noticeably wealthier and more powerful than me, that is.

ETA: Or to put it more simply, I want someone to fix it. Soon.

No, tempting as it was, we didn't... but my little stuffed toy monkey did He even got photographed with Michael Shanks and Chris Judge from Stargate, but that belongs in another thread *g*

I don't think anyone is trying to sell the Ennis-Brown mansion - it belongs to Trust for Preservation of Cultural Heritage, and they are just wanting to restore it. I believe there has been a quote for repairs, and the local council (or the equivalent of) are putting in 80% of the money, but they need the rest from donations, and adopt-a-brick.

A few years back a friend toured LA and sent me copies of her pics and I scanned them in. At the time she was there, they had just lost a lot of the trees and underbrush on the hillside to forest fires so it is pretty barren.

Hey, all! That's a great pic, Claire. The group is for real and welcomes individual and group fund-raising efforts. I'm pasting a Paypal Donation button below. I'll keep track of donations and purchase the block(s). One block is $250. There's room for a name and an occasion, so suggestions?

"The Ennis-Brown House has been designated as a city, state and national landmark. It has also been designated as an official project of Save America's Treasures by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is currently on the World Monument Fund's Most Endangered Site List sharing that distinction with other notable structures such as the Great Wall of China and the Quetzalcoaltl Temple in Mexico.

The Trust for Preservation is currently faced with a $1,000,000 shortfall which needs to be raised before they can commence work on the estimated $5,000,000 first phase of operations to structurally secure the house. With depleting funds, they are in a desperate race to save this historic landmark by the 20th century's greatest architect." The Trust has recieved funds from the national FLW group and local government. Here's the link again: http://ennisbrownhouse.org/
