Save Angel's Mansion!
Hey, all!
I was planning on surprising Little Heaven and Starlet with a tour of Angel's Sunnydale Mansion near Griffith Park in LA, but the Ennis-Brown House, built by Frank Loyd Wright, is *still* closed due to more damage sustained from the heavy rains of March 2005. Originally damaged heavily in the Northridge earthquake in what? 1993?, the house has been in decline ever since. There is a desperate effort on to save it and any contribution would be appreciated. You can also "Adopt-A-Block", but that's a contribution of $125 to $250. Maybe we could adopt a group of blocks in the name of the Strangers? Penney? I volunteer to background coordinate if there's any interest at all. Let me know! Besides playing Angel's mansion in BtVS, It was featured in "Bladerunner" (A fave of mine) and "Grand Canyon" and is the house in " The House On Haunted Hill" (the original film). Here's the link- it's a spectacular old place- there's a pic of the fireplace http://www.ennisbrownhouse.org/ Laurie

You know, I read somewhere that as famous of an architech as Frank Loyd Wright is, his houses are very hard to sell. I'm not sure why. If I had the money, I'd buy one of his houses, they're cool.

I didn't know that was a real place. What parts of the house were used for Angel? The outside always seemed like a set to me. Was it just the fireplace area?
Anyway, I'd be willing to pitch in some if we're going to make a project of it. |

I didn't know it was a real place either. I don't really like the exterior but the interior is really interesting. I really like the bathroom.

Laurie, you hit on one of my obsessions. I've seen almost everything Wright built east of the Mississippi. I'm in for a donation for sure and if you want help administratively, I'd be glad to volunteer.

Yay! I'm glad ya'll are interested in donating. Let's see what Penney says about a concerted effort here at ST. I'm also thinking of maybe setting up a seperate webpage to draw in fans of all the various productions shot there.
Damnskippy, I don't know! I think they used or copied the fireplace area and the loggia (Acathala ep) - and I know it was a location shoot... maybe one of the more web savvy among us can ferret out the answer. I was really hoping to finally get to tour it. Laurie

I love Frankie's houses. So far my favorites were Fallingwater and Taliesin West. I visited the Ennis house in 1993 before any damage and it was at night. We came just before they closed, and they let us in.
It was really like what you imagine from BTVS but better. It's just so odd to be in the three-dimensional space. The open plan was one of the pet-peeve of FLW, before it became common in the American suburbian landscape, so it is easy to film inside of it because you have room to almost do panoramic takes. Count me in if you put something on. The first time I saw BTVS last summer, I recognised it right away, and everyone around me swore that it had to be a set. |

Well if the trip to the mansion does not work out maybe they would like to see some of this:
http://www.seeing-stars.com/Location...cations7.shtml I know a couple people have gone to see the Hyperion aka Los Altos Apartments and the manager has let them around inside to see the lobby and the courtyard. |

I freely admit I've been torn. On the one hand, screw the Buffyverse, y'know? Screw it running. It's gotten more than enough from us, individually and collectively.
On the other...Frank Lloyd Wright. But whatever works, I guess. I'll stick the thread. Laurie can do whatever organizing she wishes, and if y'all want to make a gift as a group of Strangers, knock yourselves out. I'll probably kick in some fundage myself -- 'cause, you know, Blade Runner. Penny

Cool beans! Thanks, Penney. I'll see what I can do setting something up. Starlet and LHeaven and I hook up on Tuesday in LA, so I'm gonna dig a little and make sure all's legit with the Ennis-Brown group and the Adopt-A-Block before accepting any donations on their behalf.
I'll e-mail you, that*clown from LA! And thank you, BAfan, we did an imprompto Angel world tour a couple of years back and it was fun - the Los Altos really is pretty. It's on the edge of Koreatown, so the corner street signs are really interesting, hee!

And I loved Bladerunner too, even though I haven't seen it in a while. I don't remember seeing the exterior of this house in the movie, though. Can anyone refresh my admittedly sieve-like memory? It's not the porch where Roy and Deckard are sitting at the end, is it?

Hey guys,
Well Laurie took me to the house on Tuesday, and it was heartbreaking to see it in such disrepair. It's an amazing building. Here's a picture that I took - as you can see, the left side of the front of the house is falling away. And while we were out and about, we also went to "The Hyperion", so here's a pic of that too, for good measure. The courtyard was open so we just wandered straight in *g*
