And also EDDIE IZZARD. Any movie with Eddie Izzard in it cannot be completely bad, My Super Ex-Girlfriend notwithstanding.

A lot of these independent, often low-budget vampire flicks have gotten made over the years. Some are actually good. Others are one-step up from soft core porn. Unfortunately, you can't always tell until you actually watch them which will be which.

One good one is The Addiction, starring Lily Taylor. This flick treats vampirism like an addiction to any "drug." Taylor plays a grad student trying to deal with her addiction while maintaining her normal life. (Going to school, etc.)

Actually, now that I think of it, I never finished The Addiction. I had to go out about halfway through and just never caught the rest. This has reminded me to check it out.

Are we just avoiding the obvious, or does no one like the original Buffy movie? I thought it was fairly good for the campy B movie it was

I thought it was fairly good for having Luke Perry. Then again, I was still deep in the throes of 90210 love. Heh. Having said that, I liked the original Buffy too. I saw it at the movie theaters, and most of the (15 or so) people around me liked it too. PeeWee Herman was funny, and Rutger Hauer fairly menacing when he had to be. And did I mention Luke Perry, cause I don't mind doing it again...

Dannyblue, you mention The Addiction. That is a good one. Lily Taylor is always good, plus it has Christopher Walken and Annabelle Sciorra. There's another movie released around the same time, also B&W, called Nadja. It has Peter Fonda as a Van Helsing like vampire hunter. It's about a brother and sister vampire who really hate each other. He even enlists the help of Fonda to help kill her.

And hey, anybody wanna mention the old Christopher Lee Hammer movies? C'mon, Horror of Dracula is pretty good.

The Hammer films were pretty much the movies that made me interested in Horror as a kid (along with the Elvira show) so I'm right there with you. I can still sit down and watch pretty much any one of them. Besides, I think I'm still a little bit in love with Ingrid Pitt.

There was a movie called The Forsaken that came out not too long ago. It was ok, not wonderful, but it was interesting how they treat vampirism more like a disease...to the point that when bitten you can take a cocktail of anti viral medicine and hold off the full transformation for a while.

Hammer films were fun, and Christopher Lee had the requisite menace/sexy thing going. Horror of Dracula scared the bejesus out of me when I was twelve. He was SO MEAN!

The other day I DVR'd Dracula with Frank Langella. Don't know why they reversed the Lucy and Mina roles - except that maybe, being 1979 they figured Lucy was the more interesting female character and Mina kind of a milqtoast character - but I do enjoy Frank Langella's understated performance. My favorite part is when Van Helsing is telling Lucy about vampires and you get the shots of Dracula riding out of the fog on his big, black horse. The whole thing has an awesome gothic feel to it.

Coppola's Dracula had some good stuff in it too, but I really found it hard to get past Oldman's thick accent under his make up.

I like it in a lukewarm kind of way, but I'd never rec it. For me, the movie is like one frustration after another. The fights aren't fighty enough. The vamps (even the head vamp) couldn't be taken seriously at all. The horror elements weren't played up enough. Everything could've been better if they'd just gone for more.

I remember the producers of the movie giving an interview where they basically said that, because of Luke Perry, they figured their audience would largely be teen-aged girls. And they didn't think teen-aged girls would care for too much fighting or anything too scary or bloody. So they didn't want to do anything too intense. And I wondered what teen-aged girls they'd been hanging out with because, when me and my friends would have slumber parties, watching scary movies (and I mean really scary movies) was part of the fun.

I grew up on these movies because my mother loved them. However, all I really remember is how the damsels would be running through the woods, and Dracula would be walking after them all slow and calm. Because it's scary when the Big Bad doesn't even have to run to catch you.

The only thing I can even remember of the Buffy Movie was Pee Wee Herman's 20 minute long death scene. It just cracked me up, beyond that the movie was pretty forgettable, I even get scenes confused with other teen vampire movies from the 80's.

One movie that I really liked but doesn't seem too popular is Near Dark I don't know why I liked it, could have been because it had THE Pasdar in is but it was so different from the other Vampire/horror movies that came out around that time.

Near Dark is just brutal. There's nothing romantic about these vamps or the way they kill. It's all gritty and raw, and real. (Or as real as you can get when talking about vampires.) Like, "If somebody bites you on the neck and starts drinking your blood, it ain't gonna be sexy and erotic. It's gonna hurt. A lot. And then you'll just be dead."

Also, it seems like the 80s were when not-so-evil vamps started turning up in the movies. Before that, a vampire "woke up" evil, no matter what kind of person they were in life. In Near Dark, you have Caleb (Pasder) who is the same guy after vamping as he was before. And since Human!Caleb wasn't the homicidal type, Vamp!Caleb isn't either.

I also like Innocent Blood. What tickles me about this movie is that, when the mobsters get vamped, their first thought is to use their vampiness to take over the city and stick it to the other "organiations." They still think like mobsters, just with fangs, and being vamps is just another weapon to them.

I have to admit, I will watch anything with a vampire in it, all movies, all kinds.

Let the Right One In is the most interesting one I've seen in a while and I am sad to hear that they will be making an American version. Why do we have to screw up good foreign films?

I second all of the ones mentioned before hand and list the ones below just because as I said, I'll watch anything with a vamp in it.

Underworld
Van Helsing
Queen of the Damned
Blade
Vampire's Kiss - Very strange movie starring Nicholas Cage
Vampire Effect
Vampire Hunter D
Salem's Lot - Saw it as a kid and the boy at the window still scares me!

My personal favorites

Let the Right One In
Interview With the Vampire
Bram Stoker's Dracula

Queen of the Damned was a great addition. I was a little sceptical about condensing two (or was it three) books into a two hour movie, and rearranging some of the character relationships, but I thought the end result was very respectable. Lots of teeth showing and biting, and a little vamp fighting too. I also thought Stuart Townsend did a better Lestat than Tom Cruise.

I am on the exact opposite spectrum for the Queen of the Damned movie. I found it to be a horrible adaption of the best book in anne Rice's series. The fact that they condensed The Vampire LeStat and Queen of the Damned into a 2 hour movie resulted in cutting out so much of the interesting plot development and story behind how Vampires came about.

I also found that I liked Stuart Townsend less than Tom Cruise and I was never a TC fan; I just thought he actually played LeStat quite well.

I've also never been a big Tom Cruise fan. Like ever. But he played the heck out of Lestat. I'm still impressed by his performance in that movie.

Stuart Townsend, on the other hand, seemed very generic to me, and didn't really embody Lestat.
