Vampire Diaries

As you might have heard, the CW has a new show this fall called Vampire Diaries. The show will be replacing Smallville (which is being moved to Fridays) and airing before Supernatural.

I haven't been paying a lot of attention to what's being said about the show. But, apparently, it's about two vampire brothers and a mortal girl. In fact, it sounds disturbingly Twilight-ish in some ways.

I admit, I'd pretty much written the show off. Then I saw some clips. And, depending on how it goes, I think it just might have guilty pleasure potential. Take a look.

If it's based on the book series by LJ Smith, it predates Twilight by about eighteen years, give or take. So if there are common elements, it means SMeyer did some research in the YA section of her local bookseller.

I read three or four books and I enjoyed them a lot. If CW is going ahead with plans to turn it into a series, I'll give it a watch and see if I would still be able to enjoy it. Maybe it'll be the next BtVS.

Er, without actually ripping BtVS off, that is.

Oh, I know. But the reason it's being turned into a series now is probably Twilight's popularity.

Totally agree. Which aggravates me because I don't actually want to 'thank' Twilight for anything. It's bad enough getting through the book section at Target these days.

Well. I'm in.

Heck, I may even check out the books.

There's a trailer for Vampire Diaries on SciFi. It did nothing to make me want to watch the series, but I doubt I'm the target audience anyway.

The promo they showed during Supernatural last night didn't exactly fill me with anticipation. But the clips I saw (well, some of them) piqued my interest a little.

I have to say I liked the first trailer much better. The part where the vampire guy was speaking his thoughts sounded....mostly silly.

However, I'll still probably give it a try. True Blood has done a fairly good job of renewing my love for all things vampire.

As much as I am a sucker for most things vampire, two words that I've heard repeatedly when describing the show have pretty much guaranteed that I won't watch - "love triangle".

I'm beyond sick of them.

Oh, I wasn't getting love triangle out of that. I was getting that one brother likes the girl, and the other brother hates the first brother and wants to kill the girl. Cause, yeah, love triangles suck, and not in a good way.

Someone who's read the books...is there a love triangle as a major plot point?

It's been eighteen years but near as I can remember, Stephan is the more humane brother, and falls for Elena and she for him and they're all starry eyed with each other. Damon is the mad, bad and dangerous to know brother, who, at first, is very menacing and threatening with Elena. But then, in spite of himself, is drawn to her as well, only he's the snarky, mean one so there's a lot of hidden attraction masquareding as menace and shit.

Oh, and apparently Elena bears a resemblence to the woman who sired both brothers. *eye roll*

It's got shipper wars written all over it. The books were good, though, being that they were YA and considering that I am a C/A shipper, am now completely immune to any kind of shipper crap peeps choose to fling. I'll just make sure I bring popcorn and my cane for poking and prodding.

Wow, Sam. The story leaves me feeling...nothing but bored. I'm pretty sure I'll be passing on this one. But, I wasn't going to watch "True Blood" either and my niece ended up getting me hooked. I guess I'll wait and see how others feel about it before I invest any time.

Well, there's way more to the novels, but one of the main points is the brothers' love for Elena. And it is YA so it's not like it's trying to be Li-ter-a-chuor.

Tru Blood left me feeling flat. And annoyed with most of the characters, except, of course, Rene. And well, you know how that turned out...! So I don't get my hopes up but I miss having a vampire show to look forward to. So I'll give it a try. It might very well turn out like Smallville, ultimately disappointing.

I don't know...I'll probably watch this, because vampires are my personal crack. I can't say no even if I try. I haven't read these books, but I did read most of the NightWorld series by the same author, L.J. Smith. They were very good for YA books--like popcorn, but the good, fluffy kind that you can't stop eating. I wish, if they're going to do her books, they'd do that series, as the mythos was damned interesting.

A love triangle might be okay, but only if they don't act like this Elena's the greatest thing since bottled blood came along. I hate main character's that can do no wrong and everyone's in love with. It just gets old.

DITTO. Unfortunately. But the more I hear about this one, the more I think the first trailer was better than anything I'm likely to see on the show.
