Ah yes. But it's wonderful watching from the sidelines too. I'm not interested so much in the fandoms themselves but the wank they generate is worth the price of admission.

Is is great to be in a fandom, but to be detacted from the main part of it. That way you can be a part of it with your friends, dip your toe in when need be, but not be affected with any of the wank. We can just sit back and watch.

I think the extent of my LoTR and HP "fannishness" (aside: I'm making up words) is that I've read an HP/Buffy crossover (Jane St. Clair...who I've followed from Voyagerdom) and some shameless pr0n in LOTR that I ended up reading 'cause someone I know did a pr0n-y art commission for it.

Otherwise, all my knowledge lies in teh wank.

Now that you mention it, I remember that one of the many, many, many times LOTR fans made FW was for getting into a war of words with, of all entities, the Chicago fandom. Apparently there was much with the hollering and screeding after A Big-Screen Musical That Will Remain Nameless At This Time "robbed" The Two Towers of a couple of 2002 Academy Awards -- right down to board "invasions," bashing in LJs, etc. ad wankstra.

Then one Chicago lover retaliated with a "My Fandom Has More Oscars Than Your Fandom" avatar, and that was all she wrote. Hoo doggie!
