Sorry, I haven't seen it yet, was going to go on Monday but felt lazy and never left the house.
I plan on seeing it early Saturday since it's going to rain all day and I want to be back in time to watch the World Cup match. ETA: Despite the bad reviews it pulled in close to $70 million US for the 5 day holiday weekend. Not too shabby.

I kind of dislike it when bad movies do well because of the whole, "promoting mediocrity," thing. On the other hand, I've ended up liking plenty of movies that were panned by the critics, and The Last Airbender might just be one of those. But, I admit, I'm not in as much of a hurry to see it as I was before.

Generally, I sneer at critical opinion, especially as concatenated by Rotten Tomatoes, which somehow has syndicated enough obscure blog rants to become The Voice of the (Easily Led, Congenitally Stupid) People. But again, I predicted this sort of shitstorm after The Happening. Too many critics felt taken for a ride and were lying in wait for this one.
That said, I do have some reservations about the casting, just on appearance alone. I see a lot of generic Teen Nick-type faces in there, and that's not at all a feature of the original. They'll have to convince me.

From what I've read, the kid that plays Aang is supposed to be a really good fit for the role and most people say Dev Patel does a very good job as Zuko. Zuko's probably the most important character to me, so I hope that's true.
Most people seem to be more negative towards the actors that play Sokka and Katara. After the shit storm initially got kicked up, people started posting positive reviews on IMDb but they were all shouted down. I don't know if this is a good/bad movie but I've decided it's something I need to see for myself because I don't trust that people aren't just bashing for their own reasons (critics hating on MNS, racebenders wanting it to fail, fanboys freaking out b/c it's OMG not the cartoon). This one I feel I need to see for myself.

And yeah, Penny, I totally agree about Rotten Tomatoes. I used to really use RT to gauge movies, but now it seems like they're in the business of providing bad buzz and not so much actually reviewing movies.

Well, generally, yeah. But this method had served me well for many years:
If Siskel like it and Ebert didn't, I wouldn't like it either. If they both liked it, I probably would as well. If Ebert liked it and Siskel didn't, I would love it. So yes, no more Siskel for that equation, but Ebert had, to understate, issues with Airbender. So, you know... As always though, to each their own.

I especially disagreed with his comments about Video Games not being art, even though he's never played one and refused to play one. I don't care that he came out and admitted he was wrong for commenting w/o giving it a shot. Even his defense was sort of a backhanded slap at Video Games. I'm not defending the movie b/c i haven't seen it but i think that with Ebert's review you have to keep two things in mind. Ebert has been vocally against this movie prior to release because he didn't like the casting choices (felt there were racial discrimination issues by not casting Asians/Inuits in lead roles) and he hates and I do mean hates 3D. I'm not saying these issues aside he would have loved the movie or proclaimed it great but I'm betting that .5 star would have been closer to 2 1/2 out of 5. Then again, what do I know? The movie could suck a$$. We'll let you know in 3 days.

Right, to each their own. I'll probably still see it, but not in 3D. I can't see 3D anyway, and no one's said the 3D here was well done.

And yeah, what you have to find is a reviewer you agree with and go with it. Once upon a time, it was Ebert but we had a falling. PS - Don't spend your money on my account, I haven't seen the movie and it could just as easily suck as much as Ebert says.

I saw this opening weekend with a friend who had watched the cartoon. I had not watched it and was admittedly only there for the shallow entertainment of watching Jackson Rathbone.
Even so, I foudn the movie entertaining and complete as a movie. I don't feel I missed anything or that the movie didn't stand on its own as an independent piece. In fact, I liked how the mythology was layered, and I wanted to see the cartoon because of it. I liked this world. So I don't knwo what the complaining was about... I have a feelnig this was one of those movies that was never going to make ANYONE happy. So I've kept out of it other than to say I did like it.

I watched this movie last week at the drive-in (it was paired with Despicable Me). I've never watched the cartoon, though I am aware of it, and what it's about, so I knew the general premise of it going in.
That being said, it wasn't a horrible movie....but it wasn't a great movie either. The action is fantastic, the special effects are well done, the storyline and mythology are interesting, at least to me they were. The acting was....uneven. Jackson Rathbone spoke in what I can only call "anime voice"--where he spoke very fast and with hardly any inflection sometimes. I'm not sure why he did that. The girl who played Katara (I think that's her name?) was a little annoying. I mean, Aang is trying to meditate in order to save the world at one point and starts talking to him in a really whiny voice. Dev Patel is a sympathetic and multi-layered villian, who isn't just out to destroy because he can, which I appreciated. The kid who played Aang was okay. I don't really have much of an opinion on him either way. So yeah...it was okay. Not great. Not horrible. Just...okay.
