Deleted and Neat Stuff from "You're Welcome."
Well, I got lucky (?) and got a copy of the shooting script for "You're Welcome." This was the Yellow draft, (the fourth revision), dated December 2, 2003.
Completely sucks to see Charisma Carpenter listed with the guest stars, BTW. I didn't like this episode, and after reading the shooting script, I still don't like the episode. That is the end of the editorializing. All I've ever watched were the scenes Charisma was in, so if the non-Cordy scenes were different, I don't know about it. Enjoy... __________________________________________________ _______________ After Angel gets the first phone call... EXT. ANGEL'S CAR - DAY Zooming along a tree-lined street. INT. ANGEL'S CAR - DAY Angel's behind the wheel. Wesley's at his side. WESLEY When did she regain consciousness? ANGEL They didn't say. (thinking) Or maybe they did. Tell you the truth, didn't hear much of anything else after they said she's awake. WESLEY Can she speak? ANGEL I don't know. But if she can hear us... I don't want her to know about what's going on. We'll ease her into it. Just make sure she knows we're okay, and that... it's all okay. Wes eyes him on that. Angel returns the look. ANGEL (cont'd) Okay? WESLEY (with a nod) We'll take it slow. She's been in a coma for almost a year. (more) WESLEY (cont'd) It's unlikely she'll be well enough to move for some time. Her muscles will have atrophied. And her brain capacity... it could be affected. ANGEL She's back. That's all I care about. EXT. ANGEL'S CAR - DAY As the car continues on... __________________________________________________ _______________ When Angel hugs Cordy... CORDELIA (cont'd) Okay... Vampire strength... crushing fragile body... ribs cracking... __________________________________________________ _______________ This had to be Minear's contribution. It comes at the end of Cordy's speech about how great mystical comas are. CORDELIA ... I didn't even get bed-hair. __________________________________________________ _______________ In the elevator at W&H... She tentatively exits the elevator. ARM around her as she, apprehensively, takes in the expanse of the place. CORDELIA Oh, my sweet chocolatey Buddha. __________________________________________________ _______________ After Cordy leaves the elevator and that slave thing is taken away. ANGEL (to Cordy) He's, uh... That's nothing to-- (changing the subject) Hey -- Wanna see my office? He gestures toward it, pointing Cordy in the right direction. As she moves off toward it, Angel throws an aside to Wesley. ANGEL (cont'd) (sotto) Called everybody, right? Wesley nods as they move to join her. INT. WOLFRAM & HART - ANGEL'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS As they enter... ANGEL (to Cordy) You can relax now. It's perfectly safe in-- LORNE/FRED/GUNN SURPRISE! Cordy YELPS again as she sees-- LORNE, GUNN, and FRED standing near the conference table, realizing the coronary they just gave her. GUNN (chagrined) Sorry. FRED We... really weren't sure what else to yell. LORNE I was a big proponent of "CC in da Hizzy," but you can guess how fast that got shut down. Are you huggable? __________________________________________________ _______________ The "reunion" with Harmony went slightly differently. Cordy still didn't stake her though. More proof it wasn't really Cordy. HARMONY OH MY GOD! Cordy jumps with a start again as she and the others turn to see HARMONY in the doorway. CORDELIA (fearfully) Harmony?! ANGEL (aside to Wesley) You didn't call--? WESLEY (kicking himself) Forgot her. Harmony rushes at Cordy, arms outstretched, squealing. Cordy practically clambers over the back of the chair to get away. HARMONY I can't believe you're here! She grips her into a big ol' hug, squeezing her. Cordy glares at Angel over Harmony's shoulder. CORDELIA Likewise. (as she breaks away) Especially since the last time I saw you, you tried to kill me. ANGEL (a little abashed) Harmony is, uh... Actually... She's my... secretary. Cordy stares at him, then at Harmony, and shakes her head. CORDELIA Oh, this just gets better and better. HARMONY I know! You and me, together again. So... how was the coma? Cordy shoots Angel a look. ANGEL Um, Harmony... Think Cordy's had enough excitement for one day... Maybe you... Maybe everybody should get back to work. As the others file out. HARMONY (to Cordy) He's such a slave driver. ANGEL Harmony... HARMONY I'm going. She mouths "We'll talk later" to Cordy and exits. Last to leave, Lorne turns to Cordy at the doorway. __________________________________________________ _______________ In the office, after Cordy tells Angel she had another vision. Cordy crosses to the window that looks out into the lobby. CORDELIA You. In trouble. Harmony spots her and waves. CORDELIA (cont'd) And I'm beginning to see how much. (then) Also, these weird symbols. Glyphs, I guess. On a wall. And... on flesh. A tattoo. And... there's a woman standing behind you. __________________________________________________ _______________ In this script, Cordy was watching Doyle's ad while sitting on the floor in Angel's living room. __________________________________________________ _______________ A decorating touch that didn't make it into the episode. CORDELIA That's right, pal! (crossing away) They dazzled you with shiny object and you guys just fell for it hook, line, and--- (doubletakes) Is that a real Lichtenstein? (off his nod) Golly. (snapping out if it) Anyway, there's no reason you can give me for why you're--- __________________________________________________ _______________ Another Minear contribution. WESLEY They're protection runes, derived from the Enochian alphabet. CORDELIA Pinnochian? __________________________________________________ _______________ The lawyer who checked out the massive amounts of cleavage Cordy sported throughout the episode is not in this shooting script. And on the subject, at no time is Cordelia's clothing, other than the hospital gown, described. Obviously Fury's directorial choice. One wonders... __________________________________________________ _______________ In this script, Cordy grabs Eve by the hair, not the ear. __________________________________________________ _______________ Cordy's goodbye speech was slightly different. CORDELIA Don't make it hard, Angel. I'm just on a different road, and this is my off-ramp. You know what kind of hell I've been through; I couldn't tough that out any more. Powers That Be owed me one. And I didn't waste it. Got my boy back on track. __________________________________________________ _______________ I guess they wanted to keep the "sooper sekrit" ending a surprise from everyone, cast and crew included, because the script ends thusly: She kisses him -- he responds, the two of them sinking into each other warmly. A few seconds, then they break apart, and Cordy leaves. Off Angel... BLACK OUT END OF SHOW

So, I wonder if CC did know that they were going to kill Cordy off when she signed up for the ep? I also have to wonder (in my super cynical and admittly bitchy brain) who changed the ending?
Oh and Terry I thought you were done editorializing after the first couple of lines? I got a kick out of all of the Minear adds you pointed out

Wow that sure is a sneaky ending. No mention of the aired ending whatsoever. Which I believe they also did when Lindsay appeared at the end of Destiny, right?
I wonder if they have any other sneaky surprises up their sleeves for the finale? |

And certainly nothing like you're implying, which is that Smidge shows up. It makes absolutely no sense for them to keep that a secret anyway.

I believe the Lindsay surprise was spoiled cos some guy got to review it early. I wonder if they will do that with the finale or not?
I actually would like some surprises. I didn't imply anyone in particular. Just maybe some interesting stuff. Could be anyone or anything. Personally I'm holding out for a Xander appearance Last edited by motivational speaker; 04-15-2004 at 12:42 PM. |

I dont think it would make sense to keep people in the dark about characters returning.
I think the only four that they would want to keep secret would be Cordy, Lilah, Buffy or Doyle. Well, Doyle ain't coming back. So that leaves Cordy, Lilah and Buffy. If either of these three had a small cameo in the finale, the ratings would be bumped up good and proper, but only if there was a leak. A lot of Cordy and Lilah fans don't watch the show anymore. And even if all the B/A or B/S supporters still watch the show, then more people would tune in, just to see what crap they have Buff do with either one of her Vamps. For a show that's been cancelled but is hoping to be picked up by another network, surely they would want ratings as high as possible? |

I have to say that those touches would've been nice.
Damn commercials. As for the ending, I would say CC knew what was going on. And frankly, I think it works better the way it turned out, becuase I couldn't see Cordy just leaving Angel like that unless she was dead. I didn't hear anything about Lindsey being there at the end of Destiny, actually. |

Thanks SamIAm. If you ever stumble across the early draft that was written with SMG in mind (if it exists), let me know. I'm clinically interested in how they would have reworked Angel's motivation at the end of the episode.
Beyond that? I still wish Charisma had said no.

Thanks for posting, Sam!
In the first uncomplete summary, Cordelias death also wasn´t mentioned. I think the writers have decided in the last moment to kill Cordy off to make sure that her fans won´t beg for her coming back anymore.

Thanks Sam.
Well, I'm happy that Charisma took it. And not simply for my own Cordelia Lovin' Super Selfish reasons. It may not have been THE best way to deal with Cordy, but it certainly showed the world what a genuine class act Charisma is. And I'm sure it helped her gain closure in a place that she had invested so much of her self in for so long. And there was kissing. Let's not forget the kissing.

Just one point that never understood about YW (maybe this could be one proof about Cordy not dying at first)
quote: .... Last to leave, Lorne turns to Cordy at the doorway. Why, if Cordy's body was the one dying in the hospital, Lorne didn't notice that something was wrong? I know, ME lately is not an example about being carefull with their character´s habilities, but even in season 4 there was an explanation for Lorne missing everything. Now, he couldn't read, see or whatever that somenthing was wrong with Cordelia? What do you think? Maybe if this was the script (and cordelia's death was planned), that look between Cordy and Lorne could mean: "Yeah, I know what's happening and I will not say anything" from Lorne. V. |

Well, the next bit after 'last to leave...' is the part where Lorne offers to set up lunch with Colin Ferell, so no, there's no indication in this script of any hidden or silent communication between Cordy and Lorne, or her and anyone else. And I honestly don't believe there was ever a time when Whedon didn't plan to kill Cordy off, so while that bit's not in this script, I don't think it was a last minute decision either. (Truth be told, I think Cordy was dead the minute CC told Whedon she was pregnant. It just took him a year and a half to get it done.) Gimme a few minutes and I'll post the scene that was supposedly Cordy waking up and the part from when Angel and Wes go into the room until Cordy comes up behind them.
