This is awe-inspiring casting news. And I mean that sincerely. I'll go see the movie now just because of this.

Interesting but how exactly does that work? Amanda is human, therefor she ages as a human would. Winona is 36, Zachary is 30, was she 6 when she gave birth? I know Movie Magic stretches things but I don't think any amount of makeup would make it believable.

It's Hollywood. Even old people are young.

Oh yeah I know they can pretty much pull off anything. I think for me personally it would be too much of a WTF?

That only thing that is exiciting about this project for me is casting Zachary Quinto as young Spock. This is a definite wait and see movie for me.

Also, Bruce Greenwood has apparently been cast as Captain Christopher Pike. Which I can totally see, although I suspect it will be a relatively small role.

True, but maybe there are some time shifts in this movie. You know, flashbacks to little Spock and his mom, stuff like that. I can see that happening.

If thats the case, then I could see using a young actress then magically aging her for the "current time" or maybe you only see her in the past, but that would mean WR got cast in a cameo spot which would seem odd for her talent and fame. Unless she really has fallen from grace with the whole shop-lifting thing.

I personally have a tendency not to like "re-imaging" especially when it trots out stuff that isn't canon. I hated the fact that ST:E introduced Ferengi when it was clearly stated in ST:TNG that it was a first contact situation.

Like Platy's post about Pike. I just wonder how is that supposed to work? We know from ST:TOS that Pike was the Enterprise and Spock's original Capt. So shouldn't Spock/Pike be off on adventures while Kirk and the rest are at the Academy? However, that doesn't seem to be the premise because it's supposed to be ST:TOS - "The Academy Years".

I know this shouldn't bother me, especially since I really know nothing about the project other than casting and a vague premise. Guess I'm destined to be one of those "this sucks they're ruining the story" people. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong and it'll turn out great.

There had to be a long period after they graduated before Kirk became a Starship commander. He didn't come right out of the academy as a captain.
There had to be something like 20 years or more between times, so he could have been serving on another ship while Spock was serving on the Enterprise with Christopher Pike.

Also, don't forget, Amanda (Spock's mother) was Human, not long lived Vulcan. Jane Wyatt was mid-fifties when the original Star Trek was made, so that would have made her mid thirties, or younger, when Kirk and Spock were at the academy, which fits well with Winona Ryder's age.

And let's not forget Mark Lenard and Leonard Nimoy were actually pretty similar in age and played father and son.

Besides, I would have pegged Zachary Quinto at early twenties. Winona could easily get away with early forties. I think it'll work fairly easily - without heavy make-up. In fact, it might be easier if she didnt wear any make-up at all.

Jennifer Morrison of House M.D., is now confirmed with a part in this movie.

here

They won't reveal her part, but speculation is that she will play Carol Marcus, the mother of Kirk's son, revealed in 'The Wrath of Khan'

With her now blond hair, I think she could pass as a young Bibi Besch.

Wow, they're really trying to cram everything into this movie aren't they?

You know what would make me really excited for this movie? Tribbles

Word on the street is that this guy is going to play Kirk's dad. So I'm guessing the whole flashback idea is pretty much a done deal.

The trouble with tribbles is...

If they're really going to go all out and cram everything in, then we should also expect:

(1) Evil spores that mess with the crew's heads;
(2) Evil energy clouds; and
(3) Evil, creepy kids acting like possessed adults.

Oh, and also? The crew needs to be stuck for some period of time on an alient planet where the alien civilization has modelled itself after a particular and specific time in human history.
