My big problem with Kenyon is that she doesn't know how to write interesting female protagonists. They're always the same person; shy, scared of sex, BORING, and always hate they way they look and can't ever figure out why a man would want them--and yet by the end of the story they've defeated the bad guy and saved his everlasting soul--usually making herself immortal in the process. Oh, and they ALWAYS end up married and pregnant in the end. Because who wants a twu wub that doesn't in stretch marks?
That being said, I still read them, and for the most part enjoy them. I just roll my eyes at the endings and flip back to the porny bits. What can I say? I've got a one track mind. I've started her newest one, Acheron and it's pretty good, though her characterization of Artemis makes me want to tear out my hair. Samsmom, I actually took the Armintrout books as a personal challenge and managed to finish the first three. Honestly, it was the hardest time I've ever had reading a book (other than An American Tragedy back in high school which I eventually chucked in a trash can, resulting in a serious drop in my GPA that I didn't mind in the least). I really wish I hadn't read the series though. Just thinking about them leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The main character is probably my least favorite character EVER, and that includes my hatred for Cathy Dollenganger in the Flowers in the Attic series. Just an awful set of books. OH! Thought of another great series. The Novels of the Darkyn by Lynn Veihl. They're pretty entertaining books, and reinvent the vampire in an interesting, scientific way. I've read one of the Black Dagger Brotherhood books and it was good, but I haven't picked up any more of them. I really should. Another good vampire book is the Sonya Blue series...though it's definitely les romance, more Kindred: the Embraced. I read a few of them a dozen years ago, but the only title that sticks out is A Dozen Black Roses. I know there are more. And there was this one series of books that my brother had way back in the day, which he gave away to his friend (argh). I can't even remember the name of them, but they were based on Dracula, and was centered more on Van Helsing, and his family...I've been trying to think of the titles for years, but I can't even recall them. It's a shame, too. They were fantastic and I read them a few times. Yeah...I read a lot. Can you tell?

OMG, I haven't read Sonya Blue in *years*! I loved that character so much. NOT a romantic look at vampirism at all, but I adored her angst. I think I read the first three books in an anthology and then Black Roses - was that the one where her name was never mentioned? She was just the mysterious stranger that rode into town and cleaned up the bad guys? Man, that was like good crack, yo.
I've thought about finding out if there are more but I forgot the writer's name. |

Anyone see the movie? I loved it. Not because it was good or anything, but because it was so... funny. Like, seriously -- I laughed so hard at times that my glasses fogged up. Especially the Jasper background moments. I have already invented a drinking game because of him.
Seriously though -- I loved it. I felt that RPattz and KStew fit the roles (I liked Bella more, even), and cannot wait for more films. |

Yeah it is good, I planned on getting the DVD. I didn't really accept the Twilight series, until I just relaxed my nerves of finding the perfect vampire story and before long, I started to enjoy it. I'm not in LOVE with it. But it's good, Bella is sort of pathetic with her whining and craving to be a vampire. But that's fine for her. I only read up to Eclipse, so I can't judge. Jacob is my favorite, which is strange for me to not be in total love with the Edward like character. Since he is normally what I would fall for in a character. But Jacob just stole it for me. Anyways, the movie was funny, I love the action scenes. I went to see it with my two friends who have never picked up the book. Which annoyed me. I'm one of those eccentric people who believe that if you go see a book that has been turned ino a movie, you should at least read the book. I did that with Harry Potter as well. All of my friends claimed themselves as HP fans, even though they only seen the movie. I use to yell at them that they weren't TRUE Harry Potter fans. True Harry Potter fans know so much about the characters, know what Potter is thinking and what he thinks of everyone around him, know every possible detail that a movie can't show. Yeah, eccentric HP fan. Even though that has mellowed out now anyways, still like HP, not much of a fan. I was still a little pissy that Half Blood Prince was set back for next year. Not sure I was going to watch it though, HBP stabbed me in the heart and Deathly Hallows ripped my heart out. |

Dathan, I looked Saberhagen up, but I don't think that's the author. Thank you for trying though. It's really driving me nuts. I'll have to pester my brother about them again. Maybe he'll have a brainwave as to the titles or author?
Anyway, I finally read Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse. Twilight is okay. Not great, but okay. Easy to read. I read it all on Thanksgiving day, if that tells you anything. I like Edward, but he's so...buttoned up. I don't know. He's intense, but he leaves me cold. And Bella? Oh dear lord she is the whinest thing ever. I understand she's frail compared to the vampires, but seriously...ugh. New Moon was better, but I really didn't like Edward in it. I loved Jacob, however, but I'm just predisposed to fall for any werewolf in any story ever. Bella was even whinier, even stupider in that one. And the plot went NOWHERE. Seriously, it was almost pointless. However, that being said...I'm in love with Eclipse. THAT book wins my grudging respect, because I was soooo into it. Especially the Jacob bits. I'm in love with Jacob Black, through and through. My heart just breaks for him--he needs to be real and not sixteen. The parts with Edward and Jacob talking are my favorite. No wonder people like the series, if they're judging on that one alone. I haven't read Breaking Dawn yet, but I've heard...not so good things, so I don't know if I even should. I probably will. No, I definitely will. Haven't seen the movie yet either, but Robert Pattinson deserves an eye-down, so I probably will when it comes to the dollar cinema near me.

I loved the first book and my favorite HP movie was the 3rd one. And SlytherinAngelic I love your sigs. Very true. So the twilight books…not that good I’m assuming. I read about how the book series ends…have to say not all that impressed. I know the worst vampire book I read or tried to read…where I had to glue my eyes open was ‘the historian‘…RUN don’t read it. First off it takes forever to get into that book. The descriptions drove me nuts after a while, the coincidences and then the book ends. What the…at least I got it for less then a $1 at a book fair but still. Awful book. Did not like it at all. Plus about 3 pages of actually Dracula. He’s there and then not. Whatever. Plus side…the book makes for a great door stopper. But anyone ever heard of the book series by Cornelia Funke. She has 3 books called Inkspell, Inkheart, and Inkdeath? I knew its coming out as a movie. Just wondering?

The first book in the series is FABULOUS--I can't remember if it's Inkspell or Inkheart. In any case, read book one definitely. The second book for me seemed bogged down with too much stuff. Too many characters, too much going on--it was work to keep up with it, so I skipped to the end. And I own the third but still haven't read it.

Thanks for the review Angela. I will have to get that book then.
By the way I read a great book that has nothing to do with vampires or anything but wow talk about an amazing book. Its well over a 1000 pager but well worth the read. Its called ‘Whirlwind’ by James Clavell. One of the best in the series.

I read Breaking Dawn. And that's about all I have to say about that.
Did I pimp the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs? I can't remember, and I can't be bothered to go back and see. If I did, oh well, if not....READ THEM. I am severely addicted to them. Moon Called, Blood Bound, Iron Kissed, and Bone Crossed. So good. Mercy is my favorite character ever. And Adam the Alpha werewolf gets me all hot and bothered. Phrowr. Another intriguing series is the Vampire Babylon series. I can't think of the author, but I just started the first book. It's pretty good.

I was a bit late in reading the books.... I didn't start reading them till last summer, and I was hooked... I read all 4 in a week.... They weren't the best books i've ever read but I couldn't stop, and have reread all of them a couple time.... I enjoyed the movie.... After my heartbreak over the Harry potter book/movies I've learned to separate the movies from the book, and enjoy them both for what they are...
Now as far as other vampire books go I have some that I love... Christine Feehan~ Dark Series Mary Janice Davidson~ Undead Series Lara Adrian~ The Midnight Breed Series Michele Bardsley~ Broken Heart Series Linda Wisdom is great to but she's not all about vampires... CC

My roommate is soo obsessed with the series and I've made her watch some of my Angel dvds. So its like war of the Vamps in our apartment. I'm Team Angel, shes Team Edward.
But shes told me all about the series and all I agreed to read it, just to we can be on the same page and really talk about it -- she did watch quite a bit of Angel re-runs with me. This is what I think about the Twilight series: I hate the vamp rules. I hate the fact that they can go out in the sun, and when they do they sparkle? What is that about? Maybe I'm just stuck in my Weadonverse ways, but I really like the vampire rules in the Buffy/Angel-verse. I think its too ridiculous that they're able to go where every they want whenever they want. Nothing holds them back, nothing keeps humans safe -- like them having to invite them in or being safe in the sunlight. Does anyone else feel this way (or has that already been talked about because I know there are already quite a few pages of discussion lol)

Actually when you get to book 2, you find out that there's a very very strong force keeping them in check, and any vamp who threatens to expose vampdom to human kind is in for a bit of an attitude adjustment. Of course, I'm not sure how much sense it all really made, but it did make for some nice melodrama.

I for on don't like vamps or other creatures having the same rules all time... I think it fun to have someone else take on legends and folklore.... As much as I enjoy Angel/Buffy, I tend to get annoyed when people always compare the shows to other vampire shows, movies or books.... Vampires were around long before Angel/Buffy and will be around long after.... CC

Has anyone mentioned Elizabeth Knox's book, Daylight? It's one of the best vampire books I've read, with a wonderfully frightening setting, characters I loved and a unique look at the vamp myth. It's like vampires for grownups.
On the other end of the spectrum were Vikki Pettersson's Zodiac books. The first one was a fun romp but after that I just wanted to :headdesk:. As for Twilight, I slogged through the first one, but when I started the second I was laughing so hard by the second page (for all the wrong reasons) that I stopped reading and never went back. After loving Angel for so long, I just can't grok the Twilight luv. |
