Whedon's got a comic that is losing thousands of readers a month and has dropped by more than half in sales since the first issue. I would say that speaks volumes. I think with all the character assassination in #33 and #34, Whedon wins hands down. I see a "The Assassination of Angel by Jennifer Cruise" essay coming out very very soon.
It was actually The Dark Knight Returns that inspired him, that was a comic from the 80's and it was actually good.

Dark Knight Strikes Again and All Star Batman & Robin on the other hand...

Still, I think I prefer these as opposed to Whedon's systematic neutering of Greenwalt's original character.

So is Whedon writing the Angel comics now? What happened to the X-Men title he was writing? The only complaints I heard about that title was that he couldn't keep to a deadline.

Joss has very little to do with the Angel comics - the complaints are about Angel's involvement in the Buffy comic (I haven't read the Angel comic in a while, but I think his characterization over there is more consistent with him actually being Angel).

Joss's X-Men run has been over for a while now. The parts of it I read were decent, although I'm not that interested in those characters. I think the lateness was because of the artist.

Whedon approved the script for Angel: After The Fall, which had Cordelia returning to him and basically saying you got to keep fighting the good fight. She was in Angel: Aftermath too but her part was very small and Whedon didn't 'approve' that script. Now they are doing Angel: Crown Prince Syndrome which again, Whedon hasn't done boo with.

The problem is that they brought Angel into the Buffy Season 8 comics and that is what has everyone pissed off. Whedon is writing parts of the Season 8 comics and has sketched out the entire arc. I'll summarize it in spoiler tags.

--->Twilight is the Season 8 big bad. He is this masked flying figure that has been setting up headquarters and working with the US government to kill the Slayers that were created in Chosen. He is working with Warren and Amy as well. Just all around horrible guy that has slaughtered over 200 Slayers so far. Well it turns out that Angel is Twilight. And he glows. No seriously, he glows, he flies, and he is invulnerable. He revealed himself to Buffy and he enveloped her in this 'unholy glow' (his words) and she decided that instead of killing him, she wanted to screw him. So this latest issue has basically been porn. Buffy and Angel having sex while flying, etc. And while they are having sex, they are punching holes in reality and destroying mankind. Buffy and Angel have become Gods and Giles knew it was happening so he was trying to find a weapon to kill Buffy before this happened. The big bad is now the universe who wants to like reboot the world and populate it with Buffy and Angel's spawn. No, seriously. Not kidding there.

One half of fandom is going WTF?! cause dimension destroying sex is NOT a good thing. And Buffy and Angel don't seem to be acting out of free will. The other half is like SQUEE! B/A 4eva! and just seem to be ignoring what is really going on in favor of talking shit about Spuffy shippers
<----

Seriously, it's like BTVS S2 on crack and it feels like 1999 again in the fandom. SUCH bullshit. SUCH.

Frank miller...

you are forgiven.

Superman and Wonder Woman sex shifting the climate... Downright plausible compared to this tripe.

OK thanks for the explanation. I didn't realize it was the Buffy comic book that was the issue but I have seen people complaining about Angel's characterization in the comics. I've also seen it mentioned that the Angel comics would follow suit and incorporate the stuff going on in the Buffy S8 comics.

Yeah, people are complaining about Angel in the S8 comics.

Just for people who don't know: Dark Horse owns the rights to the Buffy comics. They used to own BOTH Buffy and Angel but they gave up the rights to the Angel comics sometime around ATS S5 if I remember right. IDW bought the rights to the Angel comics and came out with some damn good books imho. When Dark Horse announced the S8 comics, IDW wanted their own canon continuation of the Angel series so After the Fall was started.

The people at IDW are NOT happy about what is going on in S8 because nobody at Dark Horse bothered to tell them what was going on, not even Whedon. Nobody told them that Angel was Twilight. They were going along, writing their comics, doing their thing (and a damn good thing too, if you ask me) and then this comes along.

The Twilight leak happened a few months back and IDW exploded. I mean, the current author of Angel: Crown Prince Syndrome wrote a pretty nasty blog post about it. I will see if I can find it. A lot of fans were like oh boo, so you got Joss'ed waah but I was like damn right he has every right to be mad. He is writing the franchise too, getting paid for it, have some professional courtesy!

So no, I don't think IDW is going to be incorporating ANY of the S8 stuff into their comics. And frankly, that makes me happy. I cancelled my S8 subscription when Twilight was revealed to be Angel and the whole glowing crap is just going to be used as an excuse for his actions, like he was possessed or whatever. We know Whedon loves to possess people. B/A will say their tearful snotty goodbyes cause they can't be together or whatever and it will all be like it never happened or something.

Oh that's good to know. I saw it mentioned somewhere that the Angel comics would follow the S8 BTVS comic but that might have been a rumor/freak out.
