This was one I was dreading. I grew up with that voice and that smile almost every day. And he was there during all the major, historical moments I've known. It's like my grandfather or favorite uncle is gone. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

His was the voice that narrated so many of the biggest moments in American history. I can't think of the moon landing, for example, without hearing his voice and seeing him wipe his eyes. What a truly great man he was.

From the Kennedy assassination (my earliest memory of him) to Apollo 11, and everything in-between and beyond, Walter Cronkite was there to make sure we all knew what was going on. The man exuded charm, charisma, integrity, and enormous confidence, and made you feel that no matter how bad the news was, we would get through it all right. As far as American icons go, you can't find many better than Walter Cronkite.

Famous people die at a pretty regular clip, but this year for some reason seems to have seen an unusual number of deaths of famous people who instantly harken us back to a particular point in the past. Certainly no one moreso than Cronkite.
