Angel speaks for almost all of us when he spots Cordy at a party, flashes one of those rare grins and says "Nice to see a familiar face." We finally find out what Cordy's been up to since leaving Sunny D. Of course, although she puts a brave face on it, life's not been treating her too well. She's a bit lost, and vulnerable. But notice that she stands her ground and starts using her wits when she smartly clues into the fact that Russell is a vampire.
And Doyle sets the stage for what Cordy will eventually become to Angel - the first really humanizing influence he's ever had.
