For me she was too much like Buffy. And not in the good way. Whiney, flippant, quick to judge and a major chip on her shoulder. Kind of like Buffy if she survived another 10-15 years.
I don't like ER as an actress myself, she's pretty much done horribly in every role I've seen her in to the point that she's the critics' favorite joke. I wish they'd have gotten someone better like Charlotte Ross. I loved her in "Beggers and Choosers" at the time and thought she'd have made a great empathetic Kate.
