I HIGHLY recommend the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward. She's got a unique way of looking at vampires that's inspiring, she's a kick ass writer that can do dialogue and action equally well and none of her characters are mock-worthy.
A couple of her choices are a bit WTFish but otherwise one of the best series about vampires I've ever read.
