View Full Version : Pilot Speculations
Well, its pilot season again. I just thought that it would be fun to compile all the pilots together and specuate on which one we wish CC (or other Cordyverse Actors/Actresses) could be in, which one would make it into the fall line-up, which one would be cancelled after the first week...you get the idea.
Anyway, I'll start with this article (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=597&ncid=763&e=10&u=/nm/20050112/tv_nm/television_pilots_dc):
"Laws of Chance" is based on the real-life exploits of Kelly Siegler and centers on a feisty female assistant district attorney in Houston who uses unconventional methods against the toughest old-boy Texas defense attorneys. Gary Glasberg (NBC's "Crossing Jordan") wrote the script and will serve as an executive producer.
This one sounds awesome IMO, but I don't know if it can compete with all the other legal or procedural shows out there.
Also, JJ Abrams' new show sounds promising too. The concept is very fresh and I think CC can definitely pull off being a con-woman.
ETA: Should this thread be in here? OR TV Party?

here's one for you from the futon critic
AMY COYNE (FOX, New!) - Kevin Falls ("The West Wing") has scored a pilot production order from FOX for a new drama about a young woman who inherits her father's sports agency business following his sudden death. Said event forces her to come up with creative ways to run the agency in order to survive in the testosterone-pumped environment. The project, which is being likened to "Ally McBeal" meets "Jerry Maguire," is set up at 20th Century Fox Television.
not sure if i'd like to see CC in this or not, depends on how it is handled

Kit, I had the same thought as you on "Laws of Chance". I wonder if CC has changed her mind about avoiding hour long dramas - I almost hope so, if it increases her chances at a regular television role for next season.

She may have. Angels hours were all at night. If she did a normal drama she would have daytime hours. Plus her son is how old now? She could have a sitter on set.
Plus dont know if anyone has thought of it. But we have heard she is rumored to be a name for either the "Fog" or "Wonder Woman" I dont know if she will do a pilot because if she lands the movie then she wont be able to shoot tv at the same time.

a couple more from the futon critic
AMERICAN CRIME (CBS) - Jerry Bruckheimer's latest has been given the green light to produce a pilot. The project, which was created by Jim Leonard ("Skin") and is set up at Bruckheimer's Warner Bros. Television-based company, revolves around a female prosecutor who juggles the world of suburban crime with the challenges of being a new mother. Bruckheimer and Leonard will executive produce the project, which originally had a put pilot commitment, with Jonathan Littman.
THRESHOLD (CBS) - Bragi Schut's drama pilot about a female government contingency analyst who leads a team of scientists and military personnel to respond to the threat of a mysterious alien lifeform has been given the go ahead to produce a pilot by the Eye. David Goyer ("Batman Begins," "Blade 3") is set to direct and executive produce the pilot, which is set up at Paramount Network Television. Schut, Mark Rosen and David Heyman ("Harry Potter") will also serve as executive producers on the project, which received a put pilot commitment last year.

And then there's the 24 model, in which there are so many subplots going on at once that most of the regulars are home before dinner. Leslie Hope (Terri Bauer from S1) used to say she didn't even have to miss PTA meetings with the schedule she kept.

David Boreanaz/ABC series (for obvious reasons)
Halley's Comet (it sounds like a challenging role)
Dennis Hopper/NBC series (It'll be interesting to see if he can do comedy)

here's some more from ABC:
Frank Spotnitz's "Night Stalker"
"In Justice" a legal drama about passionate lawyers trying to help the wrongly accused.
"lennie rose" a dramedy about a single woman looking for love and fortune in gotham
on the WB "supernatural" the spooky hour long from scribe-exec prod erik kripke, also w/david nutter
on NBC "world of trouble" a drama from peter noah, femme-headed ensembler follows FBI agents who solve crimes against Americans living abroad.

Who was it - Susan Sarandon? Goldie Hawn? Jamie Lee Curtis? Said the career path of a Hollywood actress was teenage horror victim/hero >> ingenue>> girlfriend >> assistant District Attorney >> Stepmom? CC's not old enough for step mom, but she's definitely DA material - or maybe an attorney for pets, since she loves animals.

This may be promising - it's a sitcom that hasn't been cast yet (assuming CC is still gunning for a sitcom), and it's on NBC, which has to think somewhat highly of CC after her guest roles on Miss Match and LAX. I've taken the description from a Zap2It article:
NBC, meanwhile, has ordered a comedy pilot from writer/actor Carlos Jacott ("Being John Malkovich," "She Spies") called "I Love Faron Hitchman." The show, whose order is contingent on casting, centers on newlyweds whose families can't stand each other and are wondering if they tied the knot too quickly.

What is it with the sudden love of Las Vegas? You've got CSI, Vegas, Dr. Vegas (which I liked but is apparently now dead) and now another one in the works? I like Vegas, but I don't get the appeal of setting shows there. It gets to be overdone.

More pilot possibilities for CC - descriptions taken from a Zap2It article. The ones I think are the most promising:
This for Fox - some of you may like the Joan of Arcadia link:
"Brennan" is about a forensic anthropologist who uses her expertise to help solve crimes when other investigative methods have come up short. Hart Hanson ("Joan of Arcadia") is writing the script, which will be based on the character of Temperance Brennan from author Kathy Reichs's best-selling novels.
Another NBC comedy - and I'm still hoping that CC's connections to NBC are good. This one has "Scrubs" credentials, and I actually think CC would be great in a teacher role.
NBC, meanwhile, has ordered a comedy called "Fillmore Middle" from "Scrubs" writer-producer Matt Tarses. The pilot, whose order is contingent on casting, is about young teachers at a middle school.
And finally, a UPN pilot with an Aaron Spelling connection, which may also be an "in" for CC:
Finally, UPN has greenlit a Spelling TV show called "Crazy," about a female psychiatrist who draws insight on her own life through the issues of her patients. Sarah Thorp wrote the script and will executive produce with Aaron Spelling, E. Duke Vincent and Ed Zuckerman.

Heh. This is the guy who's been in all three of Whedon's TV ventures thus far. He played Ken in "Anne," Richard in "Bachelor Party," and was in the Firefly pilot.
What is it with shows about siblings these days? (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=597&ncid=763&e=4&u=/nm/20050131/tv_nm/television_pilots_dc)
In addition to that:
ABC, meanwhile, has given the green light to two comedies: an untitled project about thirtysomething singles dating in Philadelphia...
Sounds good for CC, no?
This one sounds promising. I'd love to see CC in something a la Sex in the City.
UNTITLED LIZ TUCCILLO PROJECT (The WB, New!) - Liz Tuccillo ("Sex and the City") has scored a one-hour pilot order from the Frog for a new dramedy which tracks four adult sisters in Manhattan who together struggle through career and romance. Warner Bros. Television and Steve Pearlman's Class IV Productions are behind the project, which will be executive produced by Tuccillo, Pearlman, Class IV's Andrew Plotkin and "Friends" co-creator Marta Kauffman.

Didnt know where else to post this. I had a charisma Carpenter dream. (guessing because I was tired when I was encoding a video of a thing she was on.) Consider this two unofficial ideas for Charisma.
First she was on an ep of a show like the Drew Carrey show. She played the hot chick the guys in the store were checking out as she tried on clothes.
Second was on an ep of Law and Order SVU.
A guy has a list of 4 women that all have the same name who he starts killing. (That was the plot of a nash bridges ep I watched two days ago.)
Anyway he kills the first two. Then he almost kills the third but she gets away. The 3rd is played by Charisma. She winds up in the hospital under guard. She is weak and can only give a basic decription of the guy. While at the hospital she is brought flowers and get well stuff by a few people including a Rabbi.
Then some cops arrest a construction worker for the murders and attack. Everyone thinks the case is all over when the Captain of the SVU is talking with the cop who made the arrest. A lab tech comes and says DNA doesnt match with the construction worker with the left over from the attack. He didnt do it.
The SVU Captain bolts to the elevator. It seems they pulled the police guard because they thought they had the guy. Cut to the girls (charisma's) room and the Rabbi is dressed as a nurse and trying to inject something in her IV. She knows its him and is trying to scream but cant. Then the Captain runs in and tackles him to the ground.
Next the woman played by Charisma is shown long after the court case and her hospital stay is done. She is shown on a tv show like Oprah reading from her just written book about the attacks.
Then I woke up. And the Captain in my dream was the only cast member I saw from SVU in my dream. The bald guy in the dvd cover. (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005JMAE.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg)
And I am guessing I got the reading the book thing at the end because of the part like it at SJD wich I was working on a cdr of.

"Emily's reasons why not"-(ABC) based on the book by the same name.
comedy revolves around a woman who publishes a self-help book but doesn't take her own advice.
Here are a couple more pilots... (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=597&ncid=763&e=3&u=/nm/20050207/tv_nm/television_pilots_dc)
Aidan Quinn will star in the offbeat NBC drama pilot "Book of Daniel," about an unconventional priest who is addicted to prescription drugs and converses with a modern-looking Jesus.
I can't help but think about "Miracles". I guess the show was ahead of the times, TV fad wise. Whoever that said it would've survived if it was developed this season could be right on the money.
Also,
NBC also handed out a cast-contingent order Friday to "All In." The poker-themed comedy is based on real-life poker champion Annie Duke, a single mom of four who's adept at exposing tells and bluffs at the poker table but still has a few tricks to learn at home with her kids. Former "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow will serve as an executive producer.
This doesn't really tickle my fancy, but hey! Lisa Kudrow.
And lastly,
And Fox has hired Amanda Righetti and Dave Annable to star in "Reunion." The drama follows six close friends from their high school graduation in 1986 to their 20th reunion in 2006, with each episode covering a year in their lives.
This is sort of like a combination of Lost and 24 timeline wise with a hint of Friends and Sex and the City...the characters are around CC's age too. It could work.

More Pilots (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=597&ncid=763&e=5&u=/nm/20050208/tv_nm/television_abc_dc)
Sorbo is attached to "Bobby Cannon," about a pro football quarterback nearing retirement who has to mentor his replacement while figuring out what to do with the rest of his life.
Kevin "Hercules" Sorbo in a sitcom? That's not right.
Anyway, ABC really wants to beef up their sitcom front. Hopefully, CC will be cast in one of the sitcoms in September. However, out of all the ones mentioned in the article, only two sounded promising overall:
"Neighbors," about dueling neighbors forced to contend with one another when their wives and children become unlikely friends.
"Sally," about a middle-aged woman who suddenly decides to make a change in her picture-perfect family life by getting a divorce and a job.

I'm going to try to hide a tiny little disgruntled jealous rant in this thread, since it is at least peripherally related to the issue of pilots.
Lake Bell has just landed the lead in an NBC pilot - "Fathoms" - nothing against the actress, but from the few eps of "Miss Match" I watched I didn't see her as being all that talented, she was just written out of "Boston Public" in favour of Candice Bergen, and yet she's still headlining a pilot and no news on the CC front? Grump. The pilot does sound promising, for sci-fi fans, which makes it all the more frustrating.

OLD CHRISTINE (A.K.A. UNTITLED KARI LIZER PROJECT) (CBS) - Kari Lizer's ("Will & Grace") put pilot at the Eye has been given a cast-contingent production order. The comedy project, originally announced back in November (read the story), centers on a 35-year-old divorced mom trying to keep pace with everyone around her including the judgmental stay-at-home moms at her son's private school and her ex-husband, who already is dating. Lizer is also behind the WB's comedy pilot "True," starring Anne Heche. As for "Christine," the project is set up at Warner Bros. Television.

One of them is Old Christine.
There are two that sound promising as well:
"Everything I Know About Men," about a single young woman juggling all the men in her life. The project is based on the BBC comedy "According to Bex."
"How I Met Your Mother," an ensemble comedy from the point of view of a man looking back on his single life from 20 years in the future.

On the pilot pickup front, Fox has greenlighted "Kitchen Confidential," a sitcom executive-produced by "Sex and the City" creator Darren Star.
Based on the autobiography by Anthony Bourdain, executive chef at brasserie Les Halles in New York, "Kitchen" centers on a bad-boy, down-on-his-luck chef who takes over at a top New York restaurant and must fight off all the urges of his former lifestyle.
I don't know about the Bad-Boy turned Chef premise. However, didn't Darren Star produced "Miss Match"? Maybe he'll remember CC and cast her as the female lead.

Kitchen Confidential was one of the top books of 2002. or 2001. Part expose' part confessional bio, Bourdain is one of those things I dread - a more or less successful person, who is a fuckup (a self described addict who for a while had 'a tinsy heroin problem' )who is ALSO a real writer. He is also a self-described jerk and nasty person which can be off-putting.
But now that he's a 'writer-personality' his jerkness is mostly an act (reminding me of another wild-man, James Ellroy.)
The book was funny, touching and full of anecdotes. Might make a funny tv show.

I liked "Kitchen Confidential" and LOVED "A Cook's Tour," both the book and FoodTv show.
Yeah Bourdain is a mixed bag. He's also put out a cookbook, writes mysteries and nonfiction (just put out a book on Typhoid Mary). There's a whiff of Gonzo to him and he goes into these Eric Bogosian-like soliloquies. His voice also sounds exactly like Bogosian's too.
I feel kind of uncomfortable with a barely reformed junkie doing hash in the desert and drinking like Andre the Giant but he is an interesting read.
I liked his backroom view of the kitchens and how the cooks are a ragged bunch of tattoo'd pirates who steal, shiv & run roughshod over each other. Since this is tv, I doubt it'll be that seedy or untelegenic.

Yes - I read the two novels he wrote (presumably while shooting himself up with H and working 14 hour days - I say again, that BASTARD!) "A Bone in the Throat" and "Gone Bamboo." They were both solid - though admittedly minor - crime thrillers. Both drew heavily from his time working for the Mob-backed restaurant. (Restaurants are perfect fronts for money laundering - I know, I worked in one of those too. There is a Jewish mafia, I'm here to tell ya!) I couldn't get through his 'round the world' companion to his Food Channel show - and I haven't yet read his new book or cookbook. If you like off-beat, NY based crime books (Kinky Friedman, or early Larry Beinhart) - you might give this a look.

It was total armchair traveling for me. I'd love to visit exotic places and explore the local culture/cuisine. Although admittedly, I'll pass on the still-beating cobra heart.
I might get the Typhoid Mary one, it's the morbidness in me that loves diseases.
Sounds like the tv show will have Kyle Chandler as Jack Bourdain. Geez, I know the guy has an ego but he could at least change the last name.
It's not a pilot but I wonder at CC & L&O:CI as Noth's partner. It wouldn't be as intensive as ATs, especially since they're only in half the episodes.
UPN Orders Two Comedy Pilots (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=597&ncid=763&e=6&u=/nm/20050214/tv_nm/television_upn_dc)
"Friends in the AM" chronicles the brutally honest, fiercely loyal and incredibly complex on- and off-camera exploits of the three female hosts of a morning talk show. Cox and Arquette will executive produce with the pilot's writer, Alison Gibson.
What can be expected from this show? Friends in the AM, Enemies in the PM? Sounds interesting.

I'd think Charisma would be an ideal fit to play a morning show host. Granted, UPN isn't really the best place to be, but that sounds like a workable idea for a show, and one that I could definitely see her being considered for.
Good news for D.B Woodside (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=597&ncid=763&e=9&u=/nm/20050218/tv_nm/television_casting_dc)! Hope UPN will pick it up.
Okay, a mini-rant here. What is it with guys like Shemar Moore and Jensen Ackles (SP?) getting all these roles? Shemar is absolutely gorgeous. He's okay in Y&R. However, I wasn't impressed with his acting in "Birds of Prey" (to be fair, it was an awful show). Jensen Ackles, on the other hand, I just don't get it at all. He's not even that good looking. He's pretty, but he cannot act. It isn't like he's a ratings magnet either. Afterall, He didn't really do anything for "Dark Angel", "Dawson's Creek" and "Smallville".
It is amazing how we've heard nothing about about AD all this time and yet Jensen managed to nab a role in Smallville and an upcoming WB pilot called Supernatural (http://www.thehollywoodreporter.com/thr/television/brief_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000800832).

I don't have a problem with Jensen Ackles. He's been put on crappy shows, even though I liked him on DA (I think he was the only good thing about S2). I think he can act, but I guess we'll see when he gets his own show instead of being added to struggling (no longer in their prime) shows like DC and SV.

According to the Hollywood Reporter...
" "Fog" is set in a Northern California town where, about 100 years ago, a ship sank under mysterious circumstances in a thick, eerie fog. The ghosts of the deceased mariners return from their watery graves to seek their revenge. Welling will play a local boat owner who never left the town, and Grace will portray a college girl who is back in her hometown for the summer. "
So it may be Biel's role she's taken. I must say I wouldn't mind seeing Welling and CC in a project together. They'd bring the pretty, LOL.

Definitely the role Biel was being considered for (played by Jamie Lee Curtis in the original). CC has been mentioned for the Stevie Wayne role, a single mom and smalltown DJ who was originally played by Adrienne Barbeau. Still keeping my fingers crossed that she's cast; she'd be great in the part.

Has Prinze every done comedy? And been funny? Or is this based on the wooden flailing of the Scooby movies.

He did Friends. Playing a nanny hired by Rachel and Ross to take care of baby Emma. He was actually quit funny on that show. Friends was the reason that he wanted his own sitcom.

PROS & CONS (ABC) - Natasha Henstridge ("She Spies") is the latest addition to the drama pilot, about five ex-cons who end up working with the government's antifraud forces. She'll play Charlie, one of said ex-cons. Henstridge joins the previously cast Billy Baldwin in the Touchstone Television-based project, which comes from executive producers J.J. Abrams, Raven Metzner, Stu Zicherman, Thom Sherman and Michael Engler.UNTITLED JEFFREY LIEBER PROJECT (FOX) - Mark-Paul Gosselaar has booked his first post-"N.Y.P.D. Blue" gig, as the actor has been cast as the male lead in the drama pilot, about a brother and sister who operate a wedding chapel in Las Vegas. He'll play Michael, said brother in the project, which comes from executive producers Jeffrey Lieber, Warren Littlefield, Aaron Spelling and E. Duke Vincent. Feature helmer Thomas Carter ("Coach Carter") will direct the pilot from a script by creator Lieber. WINGWOMAN (UPN, New!) - Paramount Network Television, the Littlefield Co. and Evolution Entertainment have set up a new "Hitch"-esque comedy pilot at the netlet, about a woman who helps men talk to other women. Adam Chase ("Friends") and Mark Burg & Oren Koules ("Two And A Half Men") are behind the project, to be executive produced by the trio and Warren Littlefield.
Warren Littlefield was one of the people behind her pilot last season, so that might put her on the short-list for Wingwoman or the wedding chapel show. Personally, I'd love to see her in Pros & Cons. It's an interesting concept that's not your basic procedural drama, and it's by J.J. Abrams. Oddly enough, Natasha Henstridge also played an ex-con working for the government on She Spies.

The latter of which also has Aaron Spelling, who adores her, attached to it. If CC would reconsider doing an hour-long show, she might have a blast doing one set in her hometown -- but I can definitely see her playing a suave lady who helps men get in touch with their inner smooth operator.

Welcome to the Wingwoman guide at TV Tome.
"Wingwoman" is about a woman who helps guys meet women by acting as a go-between in social situations -- an apparently burgeoning business in the matchmaking world, according to several recent newspaper and magazine trend stories. This being TV, the lead character's own love life is a mess.
"Late Night with Conan O'Brien" vet Andrew Secunda wrote the pilot, and Adam Chase ("Friends"), Warren Littlefield, Mark Burg and Oren Koules will executive produce it.
it's from Secunda, and Littlefield,
and if Alicia silverstone can be Queen B, then CC can be a matchmaker (role reversal from Miss Match)

David Mamet ("Glengarry Glen Ross," "Heist") and Shawn Ryan ("The Shield") are executive producing the 20th Century Fox TV production. Good for AA, but it really is getting discouraging not hearing anything about CC. Of course, most of what we're hearing about the others is work on one-hour dramas and I suppose she could still be holding out for the sitcom of which there are far fewer. Maybe if the sitcom falls through again, she'll concentrate on much more guest shots this season like on Desperate Housewives. Woot! I'd love to see her on there.
It's weir not hearing about CC..... she got good press for all her guest roles, for her pilot and her PB shooting.
I think Penny's right regarding CC not changing her mind about holding out for a sitcom. The good news is that the networks are really trying to revive the genre and beefing up on their sitcoms. The bad news is that it is a highly competitive genre. Everyone wants to do a sitcom these days...even though they are not comedic actors/actresses. *cough*AHD*cough*

Also I think AA pilot has more chances than Db's ones. I really don't have too much faith in DB's new project. Wow. Everyone seems to be getting shows which is good news.
But regarding CC, would she really only be interested in a sit-com and nothing else? In a career where what is it, 90% of actors are out of work? it seems to me that getting anything is something to be pleased about. And whilst I don't expect she'd be in the running for blink and you'd miss it roles, I imagine if a drama comes along that's interesting and has possibilites of lasting more than 5 eps., then surely any non A list actor would jump at the chance of it, no?

She has a nice deep voice, it's just not very expressive. Which is why her only role that clicked for me was Firefly cuz she was supposed to be stoic = wooden.
Could be worse though, imagine ER getting voice work. Between the nasal tone and lack of inflections, it'd drive me nuts.

To me her strength seemed to be underplayed drama. Especially the early years with her (mostly) silent Xander crush. Or her clear note relationship with Oz unlike the cloying Tara baby talk. I still don't get the Tara/Willow fuss when there seemed to be zero chemistry. They had the most passionless arguments.

I don't buy it. Maybe on a soap I could buy that excuse because they're so tightly filmed but not on a sit-com. Especially when they do re-writes on the scripts while filming in order to "find the funny"

Not in the industry but I was under the impression that sitcom's are technically tighter in terms of staging the sets & smaller turnaround given that they're not as big a production.
Plus, if it's one with an audience, that would make sense to me where they don't want to break the flow/audience interest with lots of retakes.

Whatever the case, it seems more of adapting a working style to fit a new situation rather than trying to mine a talent that doesn't exist (and I won't name names but I'm thinking of one, 'cause I'm mean like that :p ).
It seems more molehill than mountain to me -- but as everyone else has qualified, I'm not in the business, either.

I can only go by the tapings of That 70's Show where they do multiple takes of several scenes to add in or take out text, shoot it from different angles, and shoot the scene with different action.
Plus just about every taping report I've ever read (of T70S) mentioned how, so and so couldn't keep a straight face, or this person flubbed their lines. The thing is, that doesn't break up the flow of the audience because they're laughing right along with the actors.
As everyone else has said I'm not in the business so I don't know. One thing could be to ask the people who went to the C&D taping. How was that done? How did CC do?
DamnSkippy
03-11-2005, 10:00 AM
I've been to many tapings and they usually last 4 to 6 hours for a 30-minute show. There are many reasons [(equipment set-up when changing scenes, costume changes, shooting different angles (although with a 3-camera sitcom, there's really not a lot of that done)] but the majority of the reason in my opinion is actors flubbing their lines or the director just wanting to reshoot the scene with different line readings. I've never been to a sitcom taping where the actors never screwed up and have never seen anyone get upset when it happens. It's expected to happen and when it does cast and crew yuck it up. So unless CC has a reputation of *never* knowing her lines, then I can't see this holding her back from getting cast.
Plus, I know there is extensive rehearsal for a sitcom. Yes, it happens in the span of a week, but they do work their butts off to be ready for filming in front of a live audience.

Well about the several takes... who were the ST members that went to Cats & Dogs shooting? The can tell us if CC needs several takes or not.
I'm not from USA and here you don't have TV series with live public. It's unsual. Also our comedies have the same duration of a drama 1 hour, just recently it was introduced the sitcom format for the latin version of The Nanny (horrible version) but still it didn't have live audience so what real influence that has in the time for shooting?

I was more disgusted that this over-rated actress (who is so painfully unfunny on DH) was given an interview on the OSCAR show, an interview that could've gone to Martin Scorcese or Kate Winslet, or any-freakin'-one from The Aviator or The Sea Inside. Instead, we got an insipid interview from someone who had nothing to do with film or anything revelant in regards to the nominees. I'm still bitter that she stole Marcia Cross' Golden Globe.

I found myself thinking 'she used to be all over tv and then she just vanished.' It gave me a chill because it sort of applies here on this thread. Her news about DH comes along, providing me no comfort; it just came out of the blue, dropping out of the sky like some piece of the 'Lost' airplane and hitting her on the head. Total lottery luck. Talent not required.

i doubt if CC is getting any cut of the DVDs, when her contract was written at the beginning of angel, and even a couple of years into it's run, DVD's weren't that popular, they were just getting some movie play, but DVDs of tv shows are fairly new, and she probably doesn't have a DVD clause in her contract, (didn't the tv actors recently threaten to go on strike over DVD residuals.
and when Fox sold the syndication rights to TNT they sold them for a very small price, which may effect the amount of money she makes from residuals there.
i kinda don't think she is laying back and living on Buffy/Angel money, my hope is that she does have something in the wind that no one is talking about yet, something she has been told is going to happen, but not yet

My biggest fear has so far been proven true... :(
I was apprehensive when i heard that she was being picky with respect to the kinds of projects that she would take. That might work for the very few established high profile actresses who have offers pouring in through the mail, but Charisma hasnt reached that level yet, notwithstanding her awesome work on Buffy/Angel. Hollywood is a graveyard full of talented actresses, and with the ruthless competition, i think you HAVE to seize the moment when you have the chance if you want to have a sustainable and stable career. For every Charisma, there are hundreds, hell maybe thousands of would be actresses scratching and clawing for roles on a dwindling number of television shows.
Teri Hatcher is a perfect example of what can happen to almost every actress in Hollywood. She was the star of a cult hit, and then promptly fell off the face of the earth. And her role as Lois Lane in Superman was far more recognized back then than CC's role as Cordelia is today (at least based on personal experiences). And yes i admit that Teri is also an exception as well, seeing her comeback on DH. But will CC be allowed the same good fortune??
None of this is an indictment of CC's choice to value the time spent raising her son over her career. Not at all. It's her life, her choice. I'm just worried as a selfish fan that my favorite actress will never grace us with her presence again... :(

X factor, a lot of now respected actresses are only respected because they have given up roles that they didn't feel were for them and gone with their gut against everybody's better advice. Although I see the logic in what you're saying and if I were a practical person i'd agree with you 100% but in my opinion CC can go slow and take on roles she feels is more rewarding for her and slowly build her reputation that way. Age is a factor I grant you but still I rather not have CC's name as an acress be rolled in the mud because she jumped at the role that perhaps wasn't suited to her. I know my opinions are idealistic but as I have said a lot of well known actresses have given up certain 'sellable' roles and gone with their gut and made a good career for them selves.

True; Hannigan bailed on In The Game and managed to land another show anyway. And then In The Game didn't work out, so in retrospect she looks smart for walking before the crash came.
Anyway, I don't think you can say CC is being too picky; how could she be when she's done Charmed?
I imagine she is doing what the others are; James Marsters said he was burned to a crisp doing the pilot rounds, and the insider on AHAS said Hannigan feels like she's on vacation because, since she signed, the process is over for her (though AD is still carrying on).
The casting process for the pilot season is brutal and exhausting for any actor- and there's another month to go. That's probably why there's not much news right now.

Tend to agree with X Factor. The acting profession, espeically in Hollywood has been described by more than a few over the years as a cut-throat business. There is fame, riches and a life you only dreamed of, not the mention some great roles for a fulfilling career. Take a step wrong, and it can vanish. There are loads of once famous TV and Movie stars who are now only remembered by a few devoted fans.
And whilst I am sure that there probably are peeps that held out for the right role and passed by lesser parts so the right thing would fall into their lap, equally there are peeps that turned something down only for that thing to be huge and they themselves weren't lucky enough to get another chance again. Also given the thousands of out of work actors, all gapsing to get a decent Movie or TV role, it must be annoying or perhaps encouraging for some :), that even some of the biggest names aren't even particularly talented. For every Johnny Depp there is a Keanu Reeves :)
I think Aly H was lucky in that she had a fairly high profile on Btvs (which was always more high profile than Ats anyway) plus she got the AP movies, and that moved her up a notch or 2 on the awareness chart.
I notice JM says he's been doing loads of pilots, which may well be true. But no actor is gonna say "I got nothing" are they? And of course, you might audtition for loads of pilots, but if you don't succeed, its pretty much back to square one. Plus of course even if you do get a pilot, as CC herself has in the past, doesn't mean its gonna get anywhere. TV these days seems so darn competitive. Its certainly a mixture of talent, luck and also I think how familiar your face is as to how you get on.
For example, I was thinking about Matthew Fox the other day. I used to like him on Party of Five. Thought he was one of the better peeps on that show. When I heard he was cast on Haunted, I thought he was a good choice and when I heard it was cancelled I was sad, as I liked the premise and him in it. But think, if Haunted had been a moderate success for UPN and they had renewed it for a few seasons, Matthew Fox would never have been in the position to take up LOST. Well for me, his landing the part in LOST was a mixture of talent, luck and his face being familiar. But his case just shows how you just never know how your career is gonna go. It might well be that had he not done the Haunted show (which as it was on UPN was hardly the most high profile show in the world) someone who makes these decisions might not have seen him on that and thought "yes, he's the right guy for Jack"
I've waffled on a bit here. But personally whilst I think its not necessarily a good thing to jump at every part you get offered, especially if you've been on TV before as a regular in a show, its also not necessarily a good idea to hold out for one thing and let other things that might have potential pass you by. Though I do think that these things are more down to luck than anything, its also down to the actor concerned. I guess each individual actor must decide the way to go about stuff like this, which probably includes deciding how much they wanna work.

Just out of curiosity where are people getting that CC is being picky from? Has she turned down any offers that we know of? Has there been any talk of not doing something? All we know is that she has stated a preference for sit-coms. That's it. You don't know what she's trying out for. You don't know what she has been offered. You don't know what she has turned down.
Now as we've seen in the past that doesn't mean she won't take on hour long TV, she just doesn't want to be committed to it. Last year she what 3 shows? The year before that she had a recurring role on a TV-Dramdy. For all anyone knows this season, CC could beat Stephen Culp and end up on 5 different shows on 5 different networks (Mr. Culp went 5 for 4).
I realize that in absence of news we tend to make our own news but I think people are getting way ahead of themselves.
Oh and since Matthew Fox was brought up, he went two years in between series without any real work (that made it to TV or big screen notoriety). Now he's get a second hit TV Series in LOST. Scott Wolf hasn't done anything really successful after Po5 went off the air until he landed on Everwood (tiny recurring role on Spin City. Lacey Chabert and Neve Campbell (after Scream 3) all but disappeared and LC is only now re-emerging as a adult/young adult actress.

It also depends on why she is being 'picky' if she doesn't want to take on an hour long programme because she feels it will interfere with her family life I say 'power to her' (sorry having an early 90's flashback).
Any way like Morrigan said we don't even know if she is turning down the roles or being offered them. Either way only she knows what's going on in her life and only she knows what she can take on and can't take on.

Since August 14th, in fact. But I don't think the hurricanes are the problem. It's the inactivity at the CC end. We're at a time now where no news is bad news. Roles for pilot season will close pretty soon, and the silence is troubling. Penny's optimism is great, but not so contagious that it's been caught here. Looks like CC will win this round in the Nationale Opinie poll, but that's pretty small consolation.

I imagine that CC has her hands full right now given that Donovan is entering his terrible twos, if I do my math correctly. Who knows? She may have deliberately chosen not to actively pursue anything this pilot season and is waiting for next year, and may instead just try out for another 4 or 5 guest appearances to build her resume.
It's also possible that she's auditioning for film roles, and obliging herself contractually to a television pilot right now might not be in the game plan.
I won't get concerned - as much as I'd love to see her back on television, whatever happens, happens.
Maybe. But her husband doesn't work, and she's 34 in a town where 29 is old. With her talent, she should be starring in the next big thing, whatever that is. So the silence is unwelcome.

You assume of course that you know exactly what kind of career CC wants. Do you know that she wants to be "the next big thing"? Because it's possible that she doesn't. Not every actor in Hollywood wants to be a "superstar" some are quite content and have very sucessful careers on a much smaller scale.

Many of the actors who were "the next big thing" have been burnt out on the hype and haven't gotten anything major since said hype. Look at Ryan Phillipe. Actually, one can argue that actors don't want to be "the next big thing" for that very reason. Some seem to run away from being shoved in the spotlight. But I'm rambling. Not every actor in Hollywood wants to be a "superstar" some are quite content and have very sucessful careers on a much smaller scale.Very true. And in that same area, these actors also have a very loyal following by not taking the big roles and staying "underground", if you will. Once they hit mainstream...the allure vanishes. The thing to keep in mind is that those shows aren't anymore of a guarentee than C&D was. They might not make it onto the 2005 schedule and even if they do, they might not make it beyond the first few eps. The thing with TV is that it's a crap shoot, just ask Rob Lowe (why won't the let Sam come back the TWW?).

Well, about the Rob Lowe thing- I believe there was some bad feeling there when he left. Apparently he was set up as the star and soon found that Martin Sheen was both more popular and making more money.
But anyway- about the pilots- some actors are making pilots even though their current shows have not been officially canceled.
So, either they have insider information that these shows are goners, OR...they will have to be replaced if the new pilots get picked up and the old series gets a stay of execution.

If the show does well and it's a hit, I think most in the fandom will be happy for him, and of course viewers from outside the immediate fandom will get to know him. This is great news. I have loved Brad Cooper since Alias - was hugely relieved that he stopped having to kiss Christie Lahti, and now this. It's a funny choice, having actually met Bourdain, but I think Cooper could have real fun in this role. It is definitely an 'anti-Will' role.
Nancy Travis I've just had a thing for ever since "So I Married an Axe Murderer." I think it was because she held her own in a movie in which every other character was played by Mike Myers. I even liked her sit-com, which was, pretty much lame. (How many times did they tweak that baby, like, three?)

Eh, Travis is kind of the pilot/sitcom killer up there with Annie Potts in my mind. Funny on film, but except for Bernice, she doesn't seem to fit on TV.
And when did you meet Bourdain? Dish!!
BTW, it seems even the tv exec's are lackluster over the prospective pilots. What say we save ourselves the trouble and kill the obvious ones already.

Eh, Re NT and television, I'm with ya. But I still like to see her work.

I went to a signing and reading at the UW Bookstore with a woman who was a food editor and CIA grad baker. I didn't know Bourdain from Bourdeaux when I met him. Psst *he's actually quite friendly, if not full of himself*
It's what I do, Karen. Meet authors. They are the coolest of celebrities. They are genuinely grateful to meet you.

WINGWOMAN (UPN) - The comedy pilot, about the exploits of a woman who helps men talk to other women, has been slated to tape on Friday, April 29 at the Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. Adam Chase, Mark Burg and Oren Koules are behind the project, to be executive produced by the trio and Warren Littlefield. The pilot then is set up at Paramount Network Television, the Littlefield Co. and Evolution Entertainment. The pilot has been scheduled to tape but it hasn't been cast yet which seems a bit odd. However, this is one I thought would be good for CC, so if she is in the running maybe we'll hear something in a day or two.

And - Running time = 30 mins.
Trying to take my pulse down to below 120.
Concept sounds a bit like Miss Match.

I think it was originally pitched as a female version of Hitch but still basically the same thing as Miss Match. It's from the same group that was behind her pilot last year so we know she's on their radar. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

After "The Fog", I try not to get my hopes up too much. Still, I'm crossing my fingers for CC. Maybe they already have most of the people cast but they haven't make it official yet?
ETA: I don't think it is that similar to "Miss Match" because instead of match-making, the Wingwoman only coaches men on how to talk to women. I hope, however, that they won't make her fall for one of her clients...that would be too predictable.

When we found out about her pilot last year, all the roles were already cast and it was getting ready to shoot. Neither Futon Critic nor Variety have any news on this show other than the pilot getting the greenlight.

It's not about a project but G. Bergman going to Paramount, who has more than 20 pilots. As the articule said, She was an executive producer of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel.

Quote:
"FOX's Gail Berman, the longest-serving head of entertainment at any of the broadcast networks, is leaving the network to take a stab at the movie business.
Sources tell the showbiz trade papers that Berman will take the No. 2 spot at Paramount Pictures, under new chairman Brad Grey. Her move would end a nearly five-year run at the head of FOX, during which the network launched the likes of "American Idol," "24," "The O.C." and "Arrested Development."
It's unclear at the moment whether Berman will remain with FOX through pilot season and the May unveiling of the network's 2005-06 schedule or join Paramount immediately. The network has about 30 pilots in development for next season.
Prior to joining FOX in July 2000, Berman was president of production company Regency TV, during which time she helped develop "Malcolm in the Middle." As head of Sandollar TV before that, she was an executive producer of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel."

I'm not sure I want to live in a television world where Shannon Doherty and Tori Spelling keep getting sitcom pilot chances, and CC does not.
It is pretty disheartening.
May be we should start a pool on how many weeks it takes for Shannon to be replaced by another actress?

There do seem to be loads of pilots out there. Still a pilot doesn't necessarily mean a TV show, and a TV show doesn't always mean even one season of a show, so Shannon Doherty and Tori Spelling may yet be unlucky. I guess this proves that talent isn't the only thing that gets you a TV show. SD and TS are probably pretty well known in TV land, but apart from that, there are prettier and more talented actors around, and as mentioned before, ones that don't throw hissy fits every five minutes :)
As for CC's lack of success, it may just be down to her being choosy and holding out for a sitcom. She might have been offered other things, but has turned them down for all we know. You tend not to hear of stuff that actors have refused after all. Plus CC certainly isn't the only ex Btvs/Ats person without something. JM being one of the more obvious ones that springs to mind.

how about this one (from the futon critic)
SCARLETT (Lifetime) - Executive producers Robert Hewitt Wolfe and Hans Beimler confirmed to TrekToday.com that Lifetime has given a cast-contingent pilot order to the drama project, about an Anne Rice-esque gothic horror writer who after moving into an old mansion in New Orleans finds her fictional characters are starting to come to life. "What this means is that as soon as we find ourselves an amazing female lead, we'll officially be in pre-production," Wolfe told TrekToday. "Shooting will follow in ten or so weeks from then. So if you know any terrific late-20s, early-30s actressesv who want to move to New Orleans for a five year run on a super cool gothic/romance/thriller, let us know."
let's see, do we know anyone like that

MISS MATCH: In a move that will shock absolutely no one, sources confirm that UPN has dropped Shannen Doherty as the star of its new fall sitcom, Love, Inc. The former 90210/Charmed diva — who just last week was flown to New York and paraded before advertisers at the network's upfront presentation — was to have played a savvy matchmaker whose own love life left something to be desired. UPN isn't commenting, but an industry source says Doherty was a casualty of bad research, adding, "Preview audiences were not responding to her." The role will be recast. Meanwhile, Alyssa Milano, stop your snickering!

I'm no expert; but...
Don't those test screenings take place before the upfronts in NY?
Because Doherty was at the upfronts, promoting the show. Why, if UPN already knew that she didn't test well?
I thought those tests determined what shows got picked up in the first place?
(For example, I heard the ABC execs really didn't care much for FPJ's new sitcom; but changed their minds after it tested well).
Hmm, I know I have a suspicious mind; but I can't help wondering what really happened.
Bibliophile

Most likely, the network really liked the show but they would have looked pretty silly picking up and promoting a show without a lead. A lot of shows go through changes after the pilots are picked up. On a network like UPN, they would have to shoot a first episode anyway since that network doesn't do full pilots. They still have about two months to find someone before they start shooting for the season.
TVGuide.com reposted the blurb today with an update that UPN is now confirming the cast change.
YOU READ IT HERE FIRST!: In a move that will shock absolutely no one, UPN is now confirming that Shannen Doherty has been dropped as the star of its new fall sitcom, Love, Inc. An industry source says Doherty was a casualty of bad research, adding, "Preview audiences were not responding to her." The role will be recast. Meanwhile, Alyssa Milano, stop your snickering!
Does anyone else find it interesting that the blurb title used for the original item is the name of a show CC was on? Hopefully, it's not just a coincidence.

I can't help thinking it's mean to have the actors there, posing for photos and promoting the show and acting all excited; and then tell them they've been dumped and the network is going to hire somebody else.
I know it's not unusual, but it does seem harsh.
