From Chrissy at CC.com:
Well guys here goes. CC got the pilot for "Play Nice" the lead. It airs on UPN. She starts filming April 22nd. Her co star is a guy names Tyler LeBean. I've never heard of him and niether had she but I guess he has done some good work. Anyway she is very happy with the people that she will be doing business with. Warner Little and Adam Chase are very connected with this project.Mr. Little was with NBC for 10 years and was responsible for many of the great shows as well as late night TV. And I understand that Adam Chase was a writer for Freinds for about six year. So there should be some good stuff here. The gist of it is.....She is a strong, ambitious pushing to make partner in a law firm. Sharing her apartment with a younger very sloppy brother who she adores and five dogs. She does a lot of volunteer work where animal are concerned etc etc..........So I don't think that everything will be taking place in the office or the home. Sounds like they have a little room to expand the storylines. Remember this is just t he pilot. So we all have to be sure and watch so that it will get a good rating. So pass this on along to the other boards.......Let here a Hell Yeah................

YES,YES,YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh god....I'm so happy!! I can sleep now.

Thanks for sharing the news! I'm off to see if I can track down information on this project - I don't think we'll get to "watch" the pilot unless it's picked up for Fall 2004 by UPN, but you better believe I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. :)

Fabulous news! Not only do we have the prospect of seeing CC every week again, but now that she's been cast as a lead in her own series, that ups her rating for the kind of work she'll be considered for in the future. It is indeed a Good Friday! :D

I did some searching around the net, and I couldn’t find any information on an actor named Tyler LeBean however I found info on an actor named Tyler Labine. It appears he has had numerous roles such as ‘Seymour’ in Jack 2.0’s episode ‘Middleman’ he’s done a few episodes of Dark Angel, The X Files (as Stoner) he played Mark in Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Mall Rat in Generation X, Redmond in the movie Anti Trust and much more. You can find his profile over at tvtome. (http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/PersonDetail/personid-33783)

As Chrissy said Adam Chase was a writer and producer on Friends, he also did ‘Cursed’ ‘Class of 06’ and ‘A Minute With Stan Copper’ all of which I have never heard of. I couldn’t find any information on Warner Little.

Okay, I found a couple pictures of Tyler Labine, who I have never heard of before.

Click Here (http://abc.go.com/primetime/thatwasthen/bios/tyler_labine.html)

and here (http://www.vidiot.com/UPN/BH/Bio/Labine.html)

He reminds me of Jack Black.

He could be an interesting foil for Charisma. She's got the class, and he's got the crass.

I am so excited!!!! Yay!!!!!!

The sitcom sounds good so far. There are not enough sitcoms about strong, career women on TV these days. And Adam Chase, I am very fond of his work on Friends. Hey, maybe CC can guest star in a couple of episodes of Joey too?

Off to write an e-mail to UPN now!

I'm so happy for her. After the way things happened with ME, I can't think of anyone who deserves it more. I wish Charisma the best of luck and I know that I will be watching *when* the pilot gets picked up, not *if*.

Wow, that's great. I hope it gets picked up right away. It would be great to see CC in a new role with her great timing.

If for some inexplicable reason it didn't, it would certainly give her more exposure being cast in a lead role.

*fingers crossed*

Does anyone know an email addy where we can send some thank you's and such like Emma already suggested? I'd love to contact UPN and send them some praise. ;)

Could she possibly mean Warren Littlefield? He was the president of NBC for awhile?

That seems likely -- I've never heard of Warner Little, but Warren Littlefield is a pretty big NBC deal.

Morrigan
04-10-2004, 07:04 AM
I know who Warren Littlefield is, big time player for NBC back in the day. I've never heard of the other actor but after checking out ehab's links (thanks ehab!) I have seen the face around in different places.

This is really great news, I'm very excited and hope it gets picked up for the fall season. I'm kind of glad that she didn't end up on ABC most of their stuff seems your standard sit-com stuff.

UPN is a very small network that's always in trouble but they actually have a good thing going with their comedies; I believe that's actually their best draw. So this might work out better in the long run.

Congratulations to CC and thanks to everyone who brought this information over!

TV PILOTS
"PLAY NICE"
PARAMOUNT/UPN
Location: LA
Start date: April
ALEX, male, age 20's, handsome but quirky character, LEAD/SERIES REGULAR ROLE.
SARAH, female, age 20's, an attractive, bright comedic legal eagle, LEAD/SERIES REGULAR ROLE.

looks like a casting call
the description fits her pretty good (attractive, bright comedic)
i like that the call is for 'female age 20's' and they picked CC

OMG, great news! And if you can, download any video you can find on "Dead Last" with Tyler Labine. I can't believe I'm the only one who watched that show for the short time it was on. Rock band that sees ghosts and has to help them. Pretty good concept I thought. Labine was hysterically funny and quite the good dramatic actor as well. I can't believe they cancelled so early. This could be a good pairing if the scripts are decent. :crossing fingers and toes:

That "floating high school" show someone was talking about was "Breaker High", where fellow Canadian Ryan Gosling ("Murder By Numbers") got his start too. I used to watch it on Saturday mornings back when I was in high school. Labine was the funniest one on the show and he had good chemistry with Gosling.

Anyway, anyone find it ironic that CC is playing a) a lawyer and b) a character name Sarah?

I really hope the show gets picked up. The C/A'er in me kinda wish that DB can also guest star in it as CC's love interest.

Play Nice side summary.

Admin note: Aieeeee! Spoilers! Don't forget to use the SPOILER font. (Although I'm a little too happy at the prospect of setting up a Play Nice spoiler forum at the moment to be too awfully ranty.) -- P.C.

--->

The First side begin's in a Therapists Office, where Sarah is currently telling her therapist her that Alex never listens. When asked if that's true, Alex hasn't been listening, but he's faking to annoy his sister, stating he's joking. When asked if he heard anything Sarah's said, Alex says he's been too busy thinking about how funny the joke he just made would be.

Sarah reveals Alex has just moved in three weeks ago and is acting like a kid, which causes Alex to go into the famous 'What's wrong with being a kid' arguement. They start in on Alex goals in life, which is to have sex with a girl while playing "Metal Gear Solid" in the background.

When the doctor get's into the subject of sleeping arangement's, believing them to be a couple, they're grossed out, and discuss why they've come to therapy. Sarah want's Alex to grow up, Alex starts mocking Sarah's lines, Sarah hit's Alex, Alex hits her back and then it turns into a childish slapping contest.

END OF SCENE

Alex sit's in Sarah's empty office, puts on her headset, then start's mocking her. Sarah's assistant Lauren comes in and ask's if Alex is having a busy day. Alex offers her a game of Spin The Bottle and when she ignore's it and asks if he needs anything, Sarah's asks her to find his shame. She warns him not to date his assistant, but Alex point's out she didn't and starts running down a list of who she said he can't date. She can't lose this assistant. Alex points out that she drove away her last assistant. Sarah points out he had a nervous breakdown. Alex ask's if he had one or she gave him one. Sarah say's it's all the same in the eye's of the law. Next in the scene is a part I think is just Uber-funny. CC will have us in stitches.

Sarah get's a cross call, on one line is a client(?) colleague(?) who she is angry with, and on the other is a dog she loves. She keeps switching lines quickly between being loving and sweet to the dog, then calling the client's buisness partner's son's of a bitches.
She get's back on to the dog, calling him a good boy, then goes onto don and calls him a good boy too and hangs up.

Then Jennifer comes in showing off an engagement ring.

END OF SCENE

The side end's with a scene in a restaurant where Sarah keep's making comment's in French which translate into English are babbles.

Next side picks up from when Jennifer show's off her engagement ring. Sarah point's out that Jennifer's being engaged for Seven month's, but Jennifer just loves announcing her engagement.

There's an automatic distaste between Jennifer and Alex, Alex state's Jennifer looks, then wonder's if 'Horrifuls' a word. Jennifer asks if theirs no Star Trek convention's in town. Alex is insulted, he's a Star War's fan'.

Jennifer's come to tell Sarah of a man she's found, and starts listing off his qualities only to have Sarah tell her she had at 'Man'. Sarah is excited. GARY BENNETT. Jennifer know's she's faking. Sarah has no clue who Gary Bennett is. Turns out that out of 1, 622, 000 of LA's most eligable bachellor's, he's number 371. Impressive!

Roland enter's only to find himself being insulted. Jennifer wants to set Sarah up on a double date. She can't, she's got to go to the animal shelter. Jennifer wonders when Sarah last had sex. Sarah wonders what this 'sex' she speaks of, Is. The Double Date is set.

New scene is set in the middle of the date with Sarah and Jen in the bathroom. The French scene makes sense because Gary's under the impression that Sarah is an easy-going French gardner. Sarah feels like she's being dishonest. It's LA, everyone's dishonest is Jen's defense.

A dog whimper is heard. Jennifer tries to lead Sarah away, she know's what's gonna happen. Sarah goes to help the dog who is injured and tied up in the alley.

Sarah want's to help the dog, but Jen convinces her to do it AFTER the date. Sarah agree's, but afterwards, somebody's ass is getting kicked.

New Side

Alex answer's the door to find Lauren, Sarah's assistant. She's dropping off some papers. The start flirting and Alex reveal's he's playfully delaying calling his sister. Lauren wonder's if it's artful if there are awkward pauses. That's what makes it art! Alex, being new to LA, wonder's about the activities and Lauren invites him to a party she's going to.

It's a date. Sarah comes in oblivious to what happened. Lauren leaves and Alex cooly exits to get dog food. Sarah says Alex should leave the party info there. Busted. But he still acts oblivious.

END OF SIDE (ONE MORE PEOPLE!!!)

LAST SIDE

Side picks up from Roland's entrance. Roland try's to jog Jennifer's memory. She said he was his fat shadow. It dawns on Jennifer. He's the dude that's allergic to eggs.

Alex and Roland are now trying out a video game. They're enthused and everytime they swear, it's bleeped out. Alex wins, but Roland thinks he cheated. Roland wasn't ready when they started. They started Three hours ago Alex point's out. They start calling each other 'baby', 'jerk' Alex gives a bleeped out insult and Roland can't think of an answer. Alex celebrates his victory in the battle of wits. Roland congratulates him on a well won victory. Lance comes in and they tell him the problem's with the games. Alex and Roland celebrate there lives. Their job is testing video games.

Alex is upset Sarah banned him from dating her assistant. Roland agrees it's a tragedy. Alex should get rejected on his own terms. It's like Sarah is holding her prisoner.

Alex is like Superman saving Lois Lane from Lex Luther by asking her out. Can't he be Batman, Superman's lame. Why is Batman in Metropolis saving Lois Lane? The Joker kidnapped her and took her to Gotham. Why didn't superman save her. Lex slowed him down with kryptonite. But the Joker kidnapped her. Then the Joker slowed him down with Kryptonite. Where's the Joker gonna get Kryptonite. Luthor's a billionare so....FORGET IT! Back to the task at hand. Teaching Roland to drive. They then use one of the video games as a driving test simulator.

New scene (My hand's hurt like a bitch!)

Alex and Roland enter the party. Alex meets up with Lauren. Lauren suggests Tequilla shots. Roland remind's Alex he has the tolerance of a Nine year old girl. All Alex has to do is match her, and she's a tiny person. He'll be fine. Roland would object but gets excited at Candy Corn.

New scene is at the party where Lauren and Alex are completely blitzed. Alex can't pronounce Lauren's name right, but she get's the jist. Lauren offer's Alex a jello shot. He say's he can't drink anymore until she offer's he can do it off her stomach.

Just as they start, Lauren recognises her boyfriend is theyre as Alex comes up with Jello on his face.

Alex jumps into the car with Roland saying he has to make a quick exit.

Alex can't feel his hands, Roland has to be Burt Reynolds, but who the hell want's to be Burt Reynolds, even Burt Reynolds doesn't want to be Burt Reynolds. Alex point's out not present Reynolds, 'Bandit' Burt Reynolds and Roland is good to go.

Roland is afraid to touch the wheel but after being yelled at and having some pissed off Fraternity guys chasing them, he speed's out.

Alex congrat's Roland on making it. He SO is the Bandit. A cop car pulls up to them at the lights innocently, but Roland is so panicked, he goes shooting out.

Roland explains that up till them, his extent of driving experience was Grand theft auto 3. They miss another car causing their car to crash and Alex to pronounce that he's sober now.!

I have to say, that actually sounds really funny. I can very easilly read CC into those cene and visualize how they will look.

Having seen Alex in other things I can say that he'll be good and I think he and CC will work well together. Hopefully they get a good cast and this gets picked up. It really sounds like a good sitcom. I don't think I'll be mouring the loss of Murphy Brown if this show gets on the air :)

While I'm here, I looked up Tyler Labine on imdb.com - the guys been in a LOT of stuff!

And you can find a pic of him up at TTM - http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/PersonDetail/personid-33783

What wonderful news. Is it okay for me to be jumping up and down because I am so happy? I am so excited for CC. I just know that the show with her as the lead will be a huge success. Can or should be start to write to the UPN to show our support? Because that would be a great idea IMO.

Meanwhile, let's party! :bounce: :horn:

A WOO HOO, Yay, and You Go Girl for CC!

And here is where I start analyzing the crap out of stuff, lol.

Now after looking at thefutoncritic's listing of comedy pilot's in production and the current UPN sked what do you think the odds are of 'Play Nice' being picked up?

There are 7 comedy pilots being shot:

1. The Bad Girl's Guide (Has Jenny McCarthy attached. Seems like it'd be high up there on being picked up)
2.Humor Me
(3. I Do, I did, Now what has been axed from the development sked.)
4.Me, Me, Me
5. Second Time Around
6. One on One Spin Off
7. Untitled Soluna Project
8. Play Nice

The current sked for UPN:

Mondays
-The Parkers (ending this season)
-Eve (? for next season)
-Girlfriends
-Half and Half

Tuesdays
-One on One
-All Of Us
-Rock Me Baby
-Half and Half

Weds
-Enterprise
-(Open Hour)

Thurs
-WWE

Friday
-Movie of the Week

So now it looks like this show would be on Mon or Tues. If the One on One Spin Off is picked up it's likely it would air on Tues so it's mother show can help with the ratings. Also you can cut one of the Half and Half repeats and that leaves at least one hour of free comedy time on Monday (with The Parkers gone) or half an hour for Monday and Tuesday. So where does that leave 'Play Nice' ya think?

Looking at the descriptions of the shows, 'I'm thinking 'Play Nice would be 3rd or 4th pick after the 'One on One Spin Off", "Bad Girl's Guide", and 'Me, Me, Me". It could be a close pick-up unless UPN thinks more of CC and TL's potential than I'm giving them credit for. It'd be nice if they did.

(And BTW I would squee with unimaginable joy if NB and ASH guest starred on the show. Heck NB could be CC's brother's wacky old slacker buddy who she's attracted to against better reason, ASH a partner from the London Branch of the law firm who visits and makes her life hilariously hellish. Just for the hell of it Seth Green can be another slacker friend of the brother's, JAR and Emma Caulfield as rivals for the partner position at CC's firm and uh.....AD as CC possible recurring love interest. It can be a cavalcade of ME supporting players! I can dream darnit, lol)

Thoughts?

I flipped on E! just now and saw the news on the E! News Live ticker. It runs a few times an hour while they show a program. Doesn't say anything new but it's nice she's getting attention.

This is amazing news! A lead role on a sitcom is exactly what CC wanted. Hopefully it will get picked up by the UPN. I think it might have a better shot due to the relationship between Paramount and the UPN and also UPN is trying to widen their audience. So, that might help "Play Nice" make the cut. Either way, I'll send a couple postcards to the UPN voicing support.

Ooooh, thank you!

You know, I can see a resemblance between Charisma and him...

I thought the same thing - eyebrows and chin. No, this is good good news. Network knows her, they're evidently more comfortable with this pilot than one of the other shows they were thinking about buying. Plus, when negotiating, you're always happiest when you're looking for win-win and the other side is a known quantity. Working for the network that appreciates her talent and knows her work ethic, and conversely, UPN gets a series with a happy lead actress. I bet they were just happy as hell to get her back! In fact, I'm wondering if they dropped the other show because CC signed on and/or won the role and they preferred that product over one they'd already put money into developing?

Don't know shit - so please inform.

FYI, the Futon Critic has updated its "projects in development" page and now includes the show, citing CC and Tyler Labine as leads. (Although it does mistake the title, calling it "Playing Nice".) According to the FC, UPN has ordered a 10 to 12 minute pilot presentation for evaluation. Good vibes, everybody!

Anyone know if that's a good sign? I know that ME had to put together a 5 or 6 minute Pilot presentation for ATS and another one for S5 However I don't know if that's normal or not.

Pilot orders vary from network to network. The big networks, like NBC, tend to order entire episodes, while the smaller networks order shorter presentations. It's all determined on how much money they have or want to spend. Short presentations are typical for UPN, and the 10 to 12 minutes ordered for this show is actually a bit longer than what they ordered for the other comedies. I guess that can be taken as a good sign.

Actually, I misread the column. The order was for a 7 to 10 minute pilot presentation, which is pretty much the same as what has been ordered for other UPN comedies. Dramas are in the 14 to 20 minute range. Sorry!

Thanks Kika! Gotta love the press CC is getting out of this - it's pretty amazing, since it's only for a pilot presentation and it's for UPN. I think this is a good sign that her management is doing a fabulous job for her, and also some recognition of her widespread popularity.

It's mentioned in the article about her going back to UPN. I think it's just a matter of someone not doing thorough research. She was on Buffy, Buffy was on UPN, so they concluded that she must have been on UPN.

Like Platypus mentioned, you got to love the press CC is getting out of a pilot for the UPN. Seriously, this is an unusual amount of press for a pilot, right? I don't remember hearing this much about AHD's pilot or any other pilot for that matter.

Does anyone know when the UPN upfronts for the fall season are scheduled? I'm assuming sometime in May - I just can't recall if it's early May, mid-May or late May. The good news is that we should know in less than 2 months whether or not the show was picked up for the fall. :)

Flipping through channels today, I saw a mention of Charisma and her new pilot on the E! Channel ticker at the bottom of the screen. I think it just seems like it's getting a lot of press because we're actually paying attention to it all. ;) FWIW, AH's pilot announcement was on the E! ticker too.

Good for her! I don't know about the UPN so I'm holding back any expectations until it's actually on the air and I see the finished product. Being familiar with TL's work (and I'm relieved he'll be playing her brother and not her love interest), I'm assuming that CC will be playing the straight man opposite him, which if true, will be a bit disappointing for me. I kind of want her to play the zany character.

But I wish her luck with the show getting picked up, and hope that if it is it will be both a critical and ratings success!

I'm sure that she will be allowed to be zany once in a while. All they have to do is to give her a couple shots of evil called tequila.

And also, I would like to volunteer myself as Charisma's love interest...

I'm realistic about this show's chances of ever succeeding - UPN doesn't have any established sitcoms outside of the African-American market, which makes it hard to launch any (hourlong shows stand on their own, but half-hours come in pairs). But I will still be pleased if it gets picked up, since I'd like to see it, and I'd like Charisma to get the steady paycheck and the resume boost of headlining a show. If she's good (and we all know she will be), either the show will succeed, unlikely as that is, or she'll be better positioned for a show on a major network. So I'll be hoping for the best.

Whatever the outcome, this could only be good for her. If the show gets picked up, not only will we see her every week, but she'll be doing a lot of promoting as well. I just hope that they'll give the show a chance. However, if it doesn't happen, I'm sure something better will come along.

I'm sure that she will be allowed to be zany once in a while.

I think it depends. It's being co-written by one of the Friends writers - now, I haven't watched Friends for 5 or 6 years now, but in the early years Monica was allowed to be neurotic and zany every once in a while, and she was definitely intended to be the "straight man" for a lot of the series punchlines. ;)

Agree which is why I found it odd that they were giving it a chance. However, someone mentioned that they were looking to expand their lineup and isn't Rock Me Baby on UPN? If it is and it comes back next year they could pair the shows up.

But I will still be pleased if it gets picked up, since I'd like to see it, and I'd like Charisma to get the steady paycheck and the resume boost of headlining a show.
I shall remain hopeful if for no other reason then it's nice to finally be optimistic about something and even if it doesn't get picked up this news coupled with the media attention for the Playboy issue should help her out in getting future shows.

If she's good (and we all know she will be), either the show will succeed, unlikely as that is, or she'll be better positioned for a show on a major network. So I'll be hoping for the best.
I'm not even thinking that far ahead, I just want it to get picked up for the season, whatever happens after that is up for grabs.

I think that CC can do a lot with a average script. I always thought that she had the best comedian skills/timing in Buffy/Angel.

to me the sides seem to indicate the brother is the main character, but that is good, it seems that in most sitcoms the supporting characters always come to the fore, and with CC's comedic timing, i'm sure she will be the standout regardless of who is the star, just like she did in angel

Don't look now, but if UPN picks up CC's pilot for the fall, this Tori Spelling comedy may just be what they decide to pair it up with:

It's All About 'Me' for Spelling (http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,271|87622|1|,00.html)

What's amusing to me is the pilot's title, given the "Cordy" connection:

The former "Beverly Hills, 90210" star has joined the cast of the comedy pilot "Me, Me, Me" about two New York social climbers, reports the Hollywood Reporter.

Is Tori Spelling on that WB Sit-com with Bud Bundy, Natalie from Facts of Life and Antonio Sabato, jr? They all play servants for this rich family, except David Faustino who plays one of the rich, obnoxious, spolied kids. I only saw one episode and it had to be the worst acted thing I've ever seen, well next to Son of the Beach

Yep. I think it's called "The Help". I've never seen it, but I've heard it's awful. Then again, I think Tory Spelling is spectacularly non-talented - but when I read this article, it seemed to me that this might be a likely "pair-up" for UPN with CC's sitcom. Both are outside of the Monday night "urban" comedy bloc.

And then there's Nikki & Nora (they're lesbians! they're detectives! they're lesbian detectives!!! are you turned on yet?). Which sounds every bit as dire, but features at least one white actress and therefore falls outside the "urban" (read: African-American) bloc.

But you know what? I've never found Monica to be funny. But maybe that has more to do with Courtney Cox than the character because those kinds of characters can be funny. I'm sure that won't be a problem with Charisma though. It's good for CC to play something different. She's usually typecast as 'the bitch'.
